SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—There was a time when words traveled slowly— sealed with intention—carried from one heart to another.

And now that time has come again in Santa Barbara.

Sondra Weiss started a campaign a decade ago to help ignite more caring in the world.

She calls it "The Lost Art of Love Letters."

“I love snail mail because you really slow down and really think about what's in your heart, and then have a moment to express it to write it and add in whimsical drawings if you want. We live in such a rush-rush world, and perhaps someone will send a text or something to have an appreciation, but this shows that someone took their time,” said Weiss.

She partners up with different organizations and schools to write appreciation letters for non-profits ranging from environmental organizations to mental health advocacy organizations.

“A lot of times they're learning about the ocean for the first time or learning about Surfrider and what they're doing, and possibly they might volunteer with these organizations in the future,” said “The Lost Art of Love Letters” Founder.

Last week high school students from Cate School took a trip to the Environmental Defense Center in Santa Barbara, writing punny thank you letters to the donors of the non profit.

“Just getting a handwritten card, putting that emotion into it, and spending the time, making a drawing, thinking of a funny joke, is really like the cherry on top,” said High School Student Betsy Peters.

They also met with EDC staff, getting an inside look at the work they do.

“We learned a lot about their law program and the things that they try and help with— how they take on environmental cases and they don't really look at the money that they're going to get from it. They look more like the impact they'll make,” said High School Student Lotte Nicholas.

“I just have some shells, and it just says thank you. It's been really fun. It's very meditative and calming to sketch. You're sending some love and some appreciation,” said High School Student Rose Schreier.

This week The Lost Art of Love Letters will be collaborating with the Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District for Black History Month.

Fuerzas federales de México realizaron este domingo un fuerte operativo en el estado de Jalisco, en el occidente del país, con el objetivo de detener a Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, el Mencho, considerado líder del Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) y uno de los hombres más buscados de todo el continente.

El despliegue derivó en la muerte del Mencho, según se dio a conocer por la tarde. El secretario de Seguridad federal, Omar García Harfuch, dijo este lunes en conferencia de prensa que en Jalisco también murieron 30 presuntos delincuentes, 25 elementos de la Guardia Nacional, un custodio, un funcionario de la Fiscalía local y una civil, además de que otros cuatro presuntos delincuentes murieron en Michoacán y hubo 85 bloqueos carreteros en 11 estados.

La noche del domingo, el gabinete de seguridad federal informó en un comunicado que igualmente se habían registrado vehículos incendiados y ataques a algunas gasolineras y establecimientos. Por esta situación, algunas empresas e instituciones de Jalisco y otras zonas decidieron suspender actividades como vuelos, corridas de autobús y clases para este inicio de la semana.

Frente a este balance, ¿qué llevó al gobierno de la presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum a lanzar ahora el operativo contra el Mencho, más aún cuando solamente faltan tres meses y medio para que arranque el Mundial de Fútbol del que México será coanfitrión con Estados Unidos y Canadá y en el que Guadalajara, la capital de Jalisco, será una de las ciudades sede?

Analistas consultados por CNN consideran que en esta decisión pesaron al menos tres factores: la oportunidad que las autoridades de México vieron para actuar ahora, su cálculo de que podrían enfrentar una reacción violenta del CJNG y las presiones de Estados Unidos, desde donde el presidente Donald Trump insiste en que México debe hacer más contra los carteles del narcotráfico.

Armando Vargas, coordinador del Programa de Seguridad de la organización no gubernamental México Evalúa, consideró que, con base en la información oficial que se ha brindado hasta ahora, el gobierno estimó que este era el momento adecuado para actuar contra el Mencho, incluso con la cercanía del Mundial, que tendrá su partido inaugural el 11 de junio en la Ciudad de México.

“Me parece que el Estado mexicano hizo un cálculo en donde las cuentas le salían positivas, no había una mejor oportunidad para atraparlo, es decir, las condiciones de inteligencia llevaron a una extraordinaria ubicación y capacidad de ejecución”, dijo.

La operación contra el Mencho se realizó en la zona serrana de Tapalpa, uno de los 125 municipios de Jalisco, estado desde donde el CJNG ha expandido sus actividades delictivas.

El secretario de la Defensa de México, Ricardo Trevilla, dio este lunes algunos detalles sobre el operativo. En conferencia de prensa junto a la presidenta Sheinbaum y el secretario García Harfuch, dijo que trabajos de inteligencia militar detectaron que una de las parejas sentimentales del Mencho llegó a un inmueble de Tapalpa el 20 de febrero, donde se reunió con él. Al día siguiente, agregó Trevilla, la mujer se fue del lugar y el Ejército confirmó que el Mencho se había quedado ahí acompañado de su círculo de seguridad.

Después de esto, se planeó la operación para detenerlo el domingo. Según Trevilla, fuerzas especiales del Ejército llegaron al punto, donde fueron recibidas con “un ataque muy violento” que derivó en un enfrentamiento y varios fallecidos. El Mencho

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Yolanda Yturralde is excited for students to get the help they need.

“This is an opportunity for older adults to finally receive services and not have to worry about insurance,” said Yturralde, who is the Mental Health Cancer at Santa Barbara City College’s Wake Center.

On both the Schott and Wake campuses students will be able to access free one-on-one sessions.

“The students who have come to see me, are just in shock that it's free. They're grateful and some have said that they've done some deep work that they hadn't done in 25 years,” said Yturralde.

“If students don't have insurance, particularly, an hour of, your counseling session could cost more than $100. And that is out of reach for many of our students,” saidthe School of Extended Learning’s Vice President and Assistant Superintendent Carola Smith.

Smith says the new services will help students identify roadblocks toward academic, career, relationship, and personal success.

“Oftentimes we see that our adult learners are kind of juggling many different responsibilities. They may have family responsibilities. They may oftentimes have different more than one job. so it's really important to create a welcoming and nurturing environment so that they can succeed,” said Smith.

The services help with stress management skills, emotional support, and general life management skills.

“Therapy is for everyone. And I always tell people if they come in because of specific trauma and they resolve that, they usually go on to start to dream about how they want to make their life better. And we end up doing a few sessions just to expand on what's already good. And sometimes people end up going in a totally different direction with their work or recreational or social and emotional issues,” said Yturralde.

Students can make an appointment by calling the school of extended learning mental health counseling.

“It’s just a way to expand your life and have more of what you want,” said Yturralde.

Quince personas murieron, entre ellos siete menores de edad, luego de que un helicóptero militar se estrellara en el sur de Perú, según un comunicado emitido este lunes por la Fuerza Aérea (FAP).

Las patrullas de búsqueda localizaron el helicóptero MI-17 luego de que se perdiera contacto radial la tarde del domingo, según señaló la institución.

El helicóptero fue encontrado en la localidad de Chala Viejo, distrito de Chala, en la provincia de Caravelí, en la costa sur de Perú.

Viajaban a bordo cuatro tripulantes y 11 pasajeros, entre ellos siete menores de edad (seis adolescentes y un niño de tres años).

“El Alto Mando de la institución expresa sus más sentidas condolencias y total solidaridad a los familiares de nuestros valerosos compañeros de armas y de los pasajeros fallecidos en este trágico accidente”, indicó la FAP.

Las autoridades anunciaron que se activó la Junta de Investigación de Accidentes para determinar las causas del accidente.

Según la FAP, la aeronave perdió contacto radial cuando “se dirigía a cumplir labores de búsqueda y rescate” y apoyo ante “inundaciones, desbordes y otros siniestros en Arequipa”.

Se han registrado fuertes lluvias durante los últimos días en el sur de los Andes peruanos que han causado recurrentes inundaciones en Arequipa, una de las principales ciudades del país.

Al momento se han reportado dos muertes y 150 damnificados por las inundaciones en la región.
