(CNN) — As the sea ice melts due to climate change, the trend of polar bears getting thinner and having fewer cubs has been well documented in areas such as Baffin Bay, a stretch of ocean between Greenland and Canada’s Baffin Island, and Hudson Bay in northeastern Canada.

A population of bears in Norway’s Arctic are bucking the trend, however, getting fatter and healthier even as the ice melts rapidly, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports on Thursday

The Barents Sea area, off the northern coasts of Norway and Russia, has endured bigger temperature rises — up to 2 degrees Celsius, or 3.6 Fahrenheit, per decade in some parts — than other regions in the Arctic over the past few decades, the researchers from Norway, the United Kingdom and Canada noted.

The region has lost sea-ice habitat more than twice as fast as any other area where polar bears live.

Because of this, the researchers predicted that the bears would be leaner in the years when sea ice was less available.

Wild animals’ body condition usually gives early warning signs about the impact of environmental changes on their populations, according to the study.

Looking at the 27-year period between 1992 and 2019, they compared 1,188 body measurement records relating to 770 adult polar bears taken on Svalbard, a Norwegian-owned archipelago in the Barents Sea, with the number of ice-free days in the region.

The number of days the polar bears had to go without ice increased by approximately 100 days over that time period. Yet, after an initial decline in their body condition from 1995 to 2000, they actually became fatter and fitter in the two decades that followed.

So, while the ice was decreasing — reducing the bears’ ability to hunt for seals — their fat reserves were growing.

“The most likely explanation is that polar bears in Svalbard have so far been able to compensate for reduced access to sea ice by exploiting alternative foraging opportunities and by showing considerable ecological flexibility,” lead study author Jon Aars, a population geneticist and a senior researcher at the Norwegian Polar Institute, told CNN on Friday.

“In this region, bears have access (to) reindeer and eggs on land, walrus carcasses, and also harbour seals,” he continued.

An increasing number of bears had previously been observed spending more time on land during the summer, plundering birds’ nests in west Svalbard, and data had shown more adult females in east Svalbard spending more time in areas with bird colonies.

However, the researchers remain cautious.

“Importantly, maintained body condition does not mean that sea-ice loss has no effect,” Aars said. “Rather, it suggests that Svalbard bears have, up to now, been able to buffer some of the energetic costs associated with reduced ice.”

“This buffering capacity may rely on local conditions that are not present elsewhere in the Arctic and may not persist if sea-ice loss continues or accelerates,” he added.

Aars said the study “does not contradict the broader understanding that climate change poses a serious risk to polar bears. Instead, it underscores that climate impacts are complex and may involve temporary or partial compensation mechanisms.”

Irán está dispuesto a participar en conversaciones nucleares justas y equitativas con Estados Unidos en medio de la creciente tensión entre ambas naciones, pero no se dejará imponer, declaró este viernes el ministro de Asuntos Exteriores iraní, Abbas Araghchi.

“Bajo ninguna circunstancia estamos dispuestos a aceptar imposiciones”, declaró Araghchi en una rueda de prensa durante una visita a Estambul junto al ministro de Asuntos Exteriores turco, Hakan Fidan. “Sin embargo, Irán está dispuesto a participar en cualquier proceso diplomático que sea significativo, lógico y justo”.

No está claro cuándo ni en qué formato podrían tener lugar las posibles conversaciones. Araghchi afirmó que no se ha concertado ninguna reunión con Estados Unidos, aunque advirtió que dichas conversaciones no pueden “llevarse a cabo bajo amenaza”.

(CNN) — Lindsey Vonn said on Friday that her “Olympic dream is not over” after she crashed in her final downhill race before next week’s Winter Olympics and injured her left knee.

The 41-year-old lost control after landing a jump and was seen crashing into the safety nets. After being attended to by medics, Vonn was able to ski slowly down to the finish line but was clearly feeling discomfort. She was eventually airlifted to a hospital for further evaluation, as is standard practice for competitors injured during their runs.

“I crashed today in the Downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee. I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams,” Vonn said on Instagram.

“This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s a comeback. My Olympic dream is not over. Thank you for all of the love and support. I will give more information when I have it.”

“Thank you to all the medical staff who helped me today. I am grateful for all the incredible help I received.”

Vonn was racing in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, and was the third skier to crash during the morning’s action. The rest of the day’s runs were eventually canceled due to low visibility.

Comeback in jeopardy

While it’s not yet clear whether this injury will impact her participation at the Winter Olympics, Vonn will certainly be anxious.

The ski legend made a remarkable comeback last season after nearly six years away from the sport, despite undergoing partial knee replacement surgery.

Should she still be able to compete, Vonn is set to be one of the biggest stars at the Games in Milan-Cortina and fans will be hoping she’s able to comeback from yet another setback.

“I know she hurt her knee, I talked to her,” the International Ski and Snowboard Federation CEO Urs Lehmann told reporters Friday. “I don’t know if it’s really heavy and (if) she won’t miss the Olympics. Let’s wait for what the doctors are saying.”

Vonn is scheduled to race in the women’s downhill event on February 8 at this year’s Games, before also competing in the super-G and combined team competition. Her training runs are set to begin on February 5, ahead of the Games’ opening ceremony.

The Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony is set to get underway exactly a week from today.
