(CNN) — Tuesday marks one year since a measles outbreak started in West Texas, and there have been new cases in the United States each week since.

Texas reported more than 760 cases — and the deaths of two children – before declaring the outbreak over in August. It was the largest outbreak the US had seen in decades, and since then, other large outbreaks — one in the upstate region of South Carolina and another on the border of Utah and Arizona — have amassed hundreds of cases each and continue to expand.

The first two weeks of 2026 have been some of the worst yet, with exposures reported at schools, churches, restaurants, shops, airports and more. The continuous spread of measles over the past year leaves the US at risk of losing elimination status, which the country has held since 2000.

“It is startling, because just a few years ago measles was very rare in the United States,” said Dr. Caitlin Rivers, ​an epidemiologist and director of the Center for Outbreak Response Innovation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“Now we’re seeing in a single week what we might have seen in an average year,” she said. “There’s been a real shift in the presence of this preventable disease in our life.”

Whether that balance can shift back depends on how quickly the US can improve vaccination coverage, experts say – which, in many ways, has become an uphill battle.

The US reported more than 2,200 confirmed measles cases in 2025 — significantly more than there have been in any year since measles was declared eliminated in the US in 2000. At least ​171 measles cases have been reported in the first two weeks of 2026, which is nearly as many as the average annual total in those 25 years since elimination in the US.

The vast majority of cases — more than 95% — have been in people who had not been vaccinated with the recommended two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Experts fear that the situation may have to get much worse before it gets better.

It’s particularly devastating, they say, because the illnesses and deaths they foresee are almost entirely preventable with the help of vaccines — but lagging coverage has left many vulnerable.

It’s not clear yet whether the US will maintain its measles elimination status. In April, the Pan American Health Organization, part of the World Health Organization, will formally make the determination. The decision will require detailed review of epidemiological and laboratory evidence to understand patterns of measles spread over the past year — including whether more recent outbreaks are linked to the Texas outbreak.

But experts say that formally losing measles elimination status would be a symptom of more deeply rooted issues, particularly challenges with vaccination that have been building for many years.

“Let’s face it, whether we lose elimination status or not in spring, is our public health system actually doing well?” said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, who resigned in protest last year.

“Measles elimination is a vital sign of our public health system. That public health system is blue in the ICU,” he said. “I don’t need to check its pulse to know

Las calles están abarrotadas. Gente por todas partes. Cada balcón está repleto, cada esquina vibrando. De un lado suena reguetón, del otro salsa y, por detrás, la bomba y plena.

Cada cinco pasos hay comida. Pinchos, alcapurrias y bacalaítos gigantes. Esto es “La SanSe” y, si no la conoces, tranquilo. Puerto Rico te lo va a explicar, con orgullo y en voz alta.

Oficialmente, son las Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, un enorme festival de cuatro días que se celebra cada enero en el Viejo San Juan.

Empezó en los años 50 como una actividad pequeña para recaudar fondos para una iglesia pero, con el tiempo, se convirtió en una masiva celebración de la música, el arte, la comida y la cultura puertorriqueña.

¿Extraoficialmente? SanSe, que normalmente se celebra el tercer fin de semana de enero, es cuando por fin se acaba la Navidad en Puerto Rico. La despedida final a la temporada. El último suspiro colectivo antes de guardar las decoraciones, se terminen las parrandas y la gente tenga que regresar al trabajo.

Este año, el festival también llegó con una de las multitudes más grandes que ha visto el Viejo San Juan.

“Está bastante lleno y he visto muchísimos turistas”, dijo Gabriel Sánchez, residente de Bayamón, mientras el movimiento se reducía a un paso lento, los balcones se desbordaban y la señal del celular apenas aguantaba.

“El efecto Benito es una realidad”, dijo el salsero Víctor Manuelle justo antes de subir a la tarima el sábado por la noche.

Usando el nombre de pila de Bad Bunny, Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, explicó que el artista logró despertar un nuevo sentido de identidad y orgullo puertorriqueño que ya se siente mucho más allá de la isla.

“Nunca había una figura de tanto alcance, que se había identificado tanto. No estoy diciendo que es el único. Es que Benito, obviamente con ese disco, al rescatar nuestra bomba, nuestra plena, nuestra música tradicional autóctona, abrió una puerta para que sucedan estas cosas”, dijo.

Ese alcance ha transformado aún más una de las celebraciones más queridas de Puerto Rico.

Según el alcalde de San Juan, Miguel Romero, las Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián de 2026 rompieron récords de asistencia, con un estimado de 1.083.881 personas durante los cuatro días del evento, que comenzó el 15 de enero. Solo la noche del domingo, se calcula que al menos 367.387 personas abarrotaron las calles del histórico distrito.

Turistas de toda América Latina, de Estados Unidos y de otros países se encontraban entre los locales —cantando, bailando, ondeando banderas— atraídos no solo por la fiesta, sino también por la cultura.

“En Puerto Rico, estamos muy contentos con Bad Bunny”, dijo Juan Cabán, residente de Cabo Rojo. “Estamos muy contentos que alrededor del mundo nos conozcan, conozcan nuestra cultura, nuestra música y que nos estén visitando”.

Y el mundo pronto tendrá otra oportunidad de vivir ese “efecto Bad Bunny”.

En pocas semanas, el artista llevará la música de Puerto Rico a uno de los escenarios más grandes del planeta: el show de medio tiempo del Super Bowl. Reguetón. Bomba. Plena. Todo en español. En voz alta y orgullosamente boricua.

Para muchos puertorriqueños, se siente como cerrar un círculo. Los mismos ritmos que hoy se escuchan en las calles del Viejo San Juan pronto llegarán a millones de personas alrededor del mundo.

“Yo creo que va a tener un récord de audiencia”, dijo Víctor Manuelle. “En ningún momento los latinos habían estado tan pendientes a una presentación del Super Bowl como van a estar a esta, y nosotros estamos súper orgullosos. Sé que hemos tenido en otras ocasiones representantes

Víctor Terán, boliviano de 52 años residente en Huelva, es uno de los pasajeros que este domingo iba a bordo del Alvia que partió de Madrid y que descarriló tras impactar contra los tres vagones del tren Iryo, que se salieron previamente de la vía.

“Estamos a a la espera de que nos den una respuesta de lo que sea”, dice su cuñada, Yamilei Sevilla, quien señala que la familia no sabe nada de él desde que tuvo lugar el terrible accidente. “Dios quiera que esté vivo por ahí”.

A pocos pasos se encuentra su hermana y esposa de Víctor, Osiris. “Los milagros existen”, apunta con la voz rota, pero manteniendo un brillo de esperanza. “No pierdo la fe de que todavía esté respirando y luchando a que lleguen por él”.

Al igual que ellas, decenas de personas se acercaban este martes hasta el Centro Cívico Poniente Sur de Córdoba, punto habilitado por las autoridades para atender a familiares de víctimas del accidente. Allí esperab recibir información sobre aquellas personas que todavía no han aparecido y recibir atención psicológica.

“Yo venía desesperada. En Madrid pagué un taxi para que me trajera hasta aquí y vine a las once de la noche (de este lunes)”, detalla Osiris. “Me costó 614 euros (US$720)”.

Mientras intenta mantener la esperanza en medio de la incertidumbre, Osiris cuenta que ella y Víctor regresaban justo este fin de semana de Nicaragua, de donde ella es original y a donde habían viajado para pasar las fiestas navideñas junto a familiares. El regreso a España fue en vuelos separados: Víctor llegaba antes a Madrid y Osiris al día siguiente, domingo.

La intención era encontrarse de nuevo en Sevilla, donde Víctor llegaría primero en tren y la esperaría. De ahí, seguirían juntos hasta Huelva, donde residen desde hace unos años.

Pero los planes se vieron truncados. La última vez que se vieron fue el sábado, cuando ella lo despidió en el aeropuerto, en Nicaragua. Por delante solo queda la angustia de la espera hasta recibir detalles.

Para facilitar el trabajo a las autoridades, Osiris detalla que este lunes se acercó hasta el Centro Cívico el hijo de Víctor, de 7 años y fruto de un matrimonio anterior, que ofreció una muestra de ADN por si llegara a ser necesario para una posible identificación.

El panorama incierto se sostiene tanto para ellos como para las decenas de familiares de las personas que viajaban en los trenes que protagonizaron el accidente, mientras sigue la búsqueda y se lleva adelante una investigación sobre las causas del siniestro.

Offshore flow continues Tuesday. High pressure holds for one last afternoon as well, meaning temperatures will be pleasant yet again. A few mid to high level clouds will stream through the area but temperatures into the 70s make for a perfect evening. Head out for a bike ride or a picnic! No watches, warnings or advisories.

Our weather pattern shifts again into Wednesday. Skies become overcast and temperatures tumble due to onshore flow. Expect a 5+ degree cooling trend from the day prior. A small system will cross over the area into Wednesday night bringing very light rainfall. Most areas will see trace amounts while maximum moisture is set for a tenth of an inch. Most of the wet condition occur overnight. Some pop up showers may appear into Thursday and Friday. Winds will be blustery and waves will be apparent.

Expect an overcast and damp Thursday morning. Most of the moisture will die down by the time you're headed out the door, however some small pop up showers could occur into the evening. Similar story for Friday, although rain chances are set to less than 10%. We begin to warm up into next week as our next high pressure system builds in.

(CNN) — In an ongoing struggle over the future of Warner Bros. Discovery, Netflix says it is now prepared to pay all cash for Warner Bros. and HBO, rather than a mix of cash and stock.

Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery, WBD for short, announced the amended plan on Tuesday morning, about six weeks after originally striking the mega-deal that would reshape the entertainment industry.

The companies hope that the new all cash-offer will help fend off Paramount’s hostile takeover bid for all of WBD.

Netflix is offering $27.75 per WBD share for the company’s movie studio and streaming assets, which are due to be split off into a new publicly traded company called Warner Bros. later this year.

CNN and other channels owned by WBD will become part of a separate company called Discovery Global.

Netflix had previously offered $23.25 in cash and the rest in Netflix stock, enabling Paramount to argue that its all-cash offer was superior.

Netflix on Tuesday said the transaction will be financed “through a combination of cash on hand, available credit facilities and committed financing.”

This “simplifies the transaction structure, provides greater certainty of value for WBD stockholders, and accelerates the path to a WBD stockholder vote,” the companies said in a press release.

Paramount has been anticipating the all-cash revision and has been moving forward with its plan to buy up shares for $30 each. Earlier this month Paramount CEO David Ellison also threatened a proxy fight, vowing to nominate a Paramount-friendly slate of board members to take over the WBD board.

WBD has rebuffed Paramount and argued that the Netflix deal plus the formation of Discovery Global leaves investors in a better position.

Samuel A. Di Piazza, Jr., chair of the WBD board of directors, said Tuesday morning, “By transitioning to all-cash consideration, we can now deliver the incredible value of our combination with Netflix at even greater levels of certainty, while providing our stockholders the opportunity to participate in management’s strategic plans to realize the value of Discovery Global’s iconic brands and global reach.”

Paramount, on the other hand, has argued that the channels have little to no equity value.

Earlier this month Paramount filed a lawsuit in Delaware to pursue more information about the valuation “so that,” Ellison said, “WBD shareholders have what they need to be able to make an informed decision as to whether to tender their shares into our offer.”

The court rejected Paramount’s effort to expedite the case, however.

Netflix is slated to report quarterly earnings after the market close on Tuesday.
