Former Uvalde school district police officer Adrian Gonzales arrives at the Nueces County Courthouse in Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, Texas (CNN) — The jury in the case of former Uvalde police officer Adrian Gonzales is back in a Corpus Christi courtroom as the trial enters its second week.

Testimony this week is expected to include Arnulfo Reyes, the sole surviving teacher from one of the classrooms where the casualties occurred. Reyes was shot by the gunman but survived, spending 77 minutes trapped in the classroom next to the bodies of 11 children as he waited for police to respond.

Gonzales has pleaded not guilty to 29 counts of child endangerment or abandonment in connection with the May 2022 slaughter that left 19 children and two teachers dead.

Gonzales was the first member of law enforcement to arrive at the school while the gunman was still outside. According to his indictment, the former officer failed to “follow and attempt to follow his active shooter training.”

If convicted, he could face six months to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000 for each count.

Last week, three Robb Elementary teachers told jurors what they went through when a gunman came to their campus and massacred two of their colleagues and 19 students.

Two of the survivors recounted how they called 911 to get police to come and help, giving details about the shooter and where he was. One described how a student told her she was bleeding after shots came through their classroom window.

The wrenching testimony of what they were thinking and their recorded, panicked cries for help caused families watching the trial to weep, while the jury listened intently.

CNN’s Shimon Prokupecz and Matthew J. Friedman reported from Corpus Christi and Rachel Clarke wrote in Atlanta.

Meet the US Olympic figure skaters: A soldier, a daredevil ice queen and a son who triumphed over tragedy will head to Milan

(CNN) — After a slew of electrifying performances at the national championships, 16 figure skaters will represent the US at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics – including the men’s, women’s and ice dance world champions. But the country’s best pairs team won’t be allowed to go due to citizenship issues.

Here’s what makes each skater’s journey to Milan unique:

Men

Maxim Naumov

No one knew if Maxim Naumov could muster the strength to compete again – not even himself.

His parents and lifelong coaches – world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov – were killed in a midair plane crash last winter. Another 65 people died, including some of the couple’s young students from the skating program they had founded.

Maxim, an only child, had no one who could understand the depth of his pain – no one who could guide him the way his parents did on and off the ice.

So he carved his own path: assembling a new coaching team from scratch, doubling down on his training and taking over his parents’ jobs as director of Tomorrow’s Champions – their skating school for young athletes.

Maxim, who placed fourth at each of the previous three US championships, was stuck in that same dreaded position after the men’s short program. But he rallied in the free skate, defeating a two-time Olympian in Jason Brown, winning a bronze medal and achieving what he and his parents had always dreamed of – representing the US at the Olympics.

Ilia Malinin

The “Quad God” didn’t just throw down an array of dizzying quadruple jumps – he also tossed in some backflips on his way to his fourth US title.

Dubbed the “Simone Biles of figure skating,” Ilia Malinin keeps pushing the athletic boundaries of the sport. He’s the only human on Earth who has landed a quadruple Axel jump.

Andrew Torgashev

On the ice, Torgashev is known for his rare blend of athletic and artistic excellence. Off the ice, he’s known for his unorthodox pizza diet.

“As I was recovering from Injury and coming back to competitions, in the Summer of 2022 I discovered the Pizza Diet,” he wrote on his website. “In an effort to enjoy the food I was eating and get into shape, I started on a mission to eat one pizza per day.”

No doubt Torgashev will have access to amazing pizza in Milan.

Paramount files lawsuit in pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery and threatens proxy fight

Paramount chief executive David Ellison

(CNN) — Paramount is taking its pursuit of CNN’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery to court.

On Monday Paramount CEO David Ellison announced a lawsuit in Delaware Chancery Court, where shareholders typically bring corporate disputes, as it attempts a hostile takeover of the iconic entertainment company.

Ellison criticized Warner Bros. Discovery, also known as WBD, for a “lack of transparency” around its decision to favor Netflix’s bid for Warner Bros. and HBO.

A WBD spokesperson had no immediate response, but an escalation in the form of a lawsuit had been predicted by Wall Street analysts.

Ellison has been trying for months to buy all of WBD, but his entreaties have been rebuffed.

So he is trying to gain control of WBD by offering to buy up shares for $30 each, and he is also threatening a proxy fight, vowing to nominate a Paramount-friendly slate of board members to take over the WBD board.

Those board members, he said, would “exercise WBD’s right under the Netflix agreement to engage on Paramount’s offer and enter into a transaction with Paramount.”

The proxy fight is a backup plan of sorts, in case a sufficient number of WBD shareholders don’t agree to sell their shares to Paramount in the coming weeks.

Warner’s annual shareholder meeting has yet to be scheduled. Last year it took place in June.

WBD has said that it is moving forward with its signed agreement to sell its Warner Bros. and HBO assets to Netflix for $27.75 per share, with $23.25 in cash and the rest in Netflix stock.

Netflix said last week that it is in talks with US and EU regulators to receive the necessary approvals for the deal.

But Paramount’s hostile takeover bid means that a giant question mark looms over the entire media empire.

Ellison said on Monday that WBD’s decision-making “just doesn’t add up – much like the math on how WBD continues to favor taking less than our $30 per share all-cash offer for its shareholders.”

WBD has raised a variety of concerns about Paramount’s debt financing, onerous conditions connected to the bid and other matters.

The WBD board has also cited the potential value of its cable assets, which Netflix is not acquiring. Those channels, including CNN, are being broken off into a new, publicly traded company called Discovery Global this summer.

Paramount has argued that the channels have little equity value. The lawsuit in Delaware will pursue more information about the valuation “so that,” Ellison said, “WBD shareholders have what they need to be able to make an informed decision as to whether to tender their shares into our offer.”

Major WBD shareholders have been split over Paramount, with some calling it a superior bid and others siding with the Netflix deal.

Meanwhile, President Trump has said that he will be personally involved in reviewing any merger, raising questions about whether his personal predilections will come into play.

Over the weekend he posted a link on Truth Social to a month-old Read more
