Tired of traditional red carpet glam? The Golden Globes goth girls have you covered

Odessa A'zion led the charge on gothic girl fashion at this year's Golden Globes.

(CNN) — At this year’s Golden Globes, which took place Sunday night, the red carpet fashion felt split. Many A-listers, such as Amanda Seyfried, Pamela Anderson, Kylie Jenner, Tessa Thompson, Elle Fanning and Natasha Rothwell, went the way of the traditional “glamazon” — glowy and dewy in an ethereal light colored or shimmering metallic gown. A smaller number, though, came dressed in something with a little more edge.

Odessa A’zion, who plays opposite Timothée Chalamet as Rachel Mizler in Josh Safdie’s much-lauded “Marty Supreme,” wore black wide-leg trousers with a vintage Dolce & Gabbana feather bolero jacket and black satin gloves. A’zion, who told Deadline earlier this month she doesn’t employ hair, makeup or fashion stylists, finished the look with a heavy black smoked-out eye.

Then there was Jenna Ortega, who is no stranger to pulling a darker, more severe fashion statement on the red carpet. Ortega’s black satin cut-out gown — which featured a Victoriana high-neck and puff-sleeves embellished with long beaded threads in the style of epaulettes — was the work of cult British-Turkish designer Dilara Findikoglu. Mia Goth stayed true to her name, and arrived in a custom all-black satin Dior gown and heavy eyeliner, while British star Aimee Lou Wood went for a classic big-skirted Vivienne Westwood gown made from black tulle. Miley Cyrus, whose blacked-out shades were eventually removed to reveal her smoky eyeshadow, arrived in an inky-colored sequined Satin Laurent dress with pleated shoulder detailing that fanned outwards.

Elsewhere, Blackpink’s Lisa wore a black maxi skirt and sheer, witchy-sleeved top by Jacquemus with black tassels; while singer Audrey Nuna donned a black and white cape dress adorned with jumbo-sized satin bows and a birdcage face veil from Thom Browne’s Fall-Winter 2024 collection.

But these aren’t your typical LBDs (of which this year there were plenty, as stars attempted to reflect the complicated politics of the time while still dressing for the occasion.) Through makeup and styling tweaks — Nuna, for example, topped off her veil with a sweep of black lipstick, a notable departure from Browne’s runway vision where the model wore a classic bright red — it’s clear these women were channeling something moodier than just a timeless cocktail dress.

Call them the goth girls of the Golden Globes, oozing devil-may-care detachment and spicing up the glittering red carpet procession with a little bit of mystery.

Nikki Glaser hosted the Golden Globes for the second year in a row.

By Issy Ronald, CNN

(CNN) — In a world full of mediocre Hollywood sequels, Nikki Glaser, returning to host the Golden Globes for a second year running, proved Sunday that reboots can sometimes work.

As stars visibly braced themselves for their moment under her spotlight, Glaser’s 10-minute opening monologue was full of snappy, self-aware jokes that gently skewered every part of Hollywood, from its celebrities and movies to its media companies and obsession with staying young.

Some jokes poked fun at familiar topics like George Clooney’s Nespresso ads or the age of Leonardo DiCaprio’s girlfriends or Kevin Hart’s height, but there were plenty of other gags in there, too.

Let’s take a look at some of Glaser’s funniest jokes from the night:

  • “Welcome to the Golden Globes, without a doubt, the most important thing that’s happening in the world right now.”
  • “There are so many A-listers here, and by A-listers I mean people who are on a list that has been heavily redacted.”
  • “George Clooney, you’re amazing, I’m such a fan. I shouldn’t be allowed to talk to you right now. I’ve always wanted to ask you this question, it might be unprofessional but here goes. My Nespresso has been coming out kind of watery, and I’m wondering — is it, like, a pod issue, or do you think it might be the filter?”
  • “The Rock is nominated tonight, and, luckily for him, the TV show ‘The Paper’ is not, so he might win.”
  • “What a career Leonardo DiCaprio has had. Countless iconic performances, you’ve worked with every great director, you’ve won three Golden Globes and an Oscar, and the most impressive thing is you were able to accomplish all that before your girlfriend turned 30. ”
  • “In ‘Sinners,’ Michael B. Jordan played two brothers. Am I allowed to say that? Doesn’t sound right. He played twins. I can’t believe it, we got two Michael B. Jordans. When I saw that, I was like Nikki B. Jerkin.”
  • “’Wicked’ was back with ‘Wicked: For Money’ … Two hours into that movie I was in tears, like I can’t believe there’s 45 minutes left.”
  • “Ariana (Grande), I would listen to you sing the phonebook, grab the one Kevin Hart is sitting on.”
  • “Not a lot of people know this, but Timothée Chalamet is the first actor in history to have to put on muscle for a movie about ping-pong. He gained over 60 ounces, it’s insane.”
  • “It’s a privilege to be in this room with you all. Please keep doing what you’re doing. Guillermo del Toro, keep making weird monster sex movies. And James Cameron, keep making weird monster sex movies.”
  • “And lastly, Steve Martin and Martin Short, keep proving that in this industry, you’re never too old to still need money.”

‘We have a mission in the US’: France star Ousmane Dembélé tells CNN Sports he’s targeting World Cup glory after huge 2025

By Aleks Klosok, Amanda Davies, CNN

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Winners in 2018, runners-up in 2022 – will 2026 be France’s year to once again rule the roost on soccer’s biggest stage?

With a new year, comes a new set of goals and for the world’s newly crowned best men’s soccer player, Ousmane Dembélé, another shot at World Cup glory is high on his agenda.

After lifting the trophy in Russia eight years ago, painful memories of an agonizing loss to Argentina in Qatar remain. The chance, though, for redemption on US soil this summer and a tilt at a third global title for Les Bleus is an opportunity he wants to grab with both hands.

“We know what it takes to go all the way and we’re going to try to do everything to bring the trophy home,” the forward exclusively told CNN Sports after winning the Best Men’s Player Award at the recent Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

“We know we have a mission in the United States. We’ve been talking about this World Cup for a long time now and I think we’ll be ready for the occasion.”

Leading from the front

Undertaking that mission will be a group of players very different to the ones that took to the field in the Lusail Stadium in December 2022.

Gone are veterans Hugo Lloris, Raphaël Varane, Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud.

The class of 2026 under France coach Didier Deschamps is a mix of energetic youth and experienced heads with Dembélé poised to be one of the leading figures alongside fellow striker Kylian Mbappé.

“There’ve been a huge number of changes,” he says. “We’ve got talented players who’ve adapted very well to the style and squad.

“The French team will always play a leading role in this kind of tournament, so you’ll have to count on us.”

The 28-year-old acknowledges that the tournament won’t be easy, with a standout group stage match against Norway, featuring Premier League stars Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard, on the horizon.

However, the team’s opening match of the tournament – a June 16 clash against Senegal at MetLife Stadium – is what the forward has circled in his diary.

Born and raised in France to immigrants from Africa, his mother Fatima, with whom he shares a close bond, is Mauritanian-Senegalese while his father hails from Mali.

“I received a ton of messages after that,” he smiles, recalling December’s World Cup draw.

“People told me to score an own goal (against Senegal). Literally! There are several of us in this team who are Senegalese and French. It’s going to be a very beautiful match.”

Life changing 2025

It’s not just at national level where the attacker is eyeing further success.

2025 was a transformative year individually and at club level for Dembélé.

He was an instrumental part of the Paris Saint-Germain team which ran riot in France last season, finishing as the league’s top scorer as Les Parisiens won a domestic double.

With eight goals and six assists in 15 Champions League matches, Dembélé galvanized the young PSG squad on its way to a historic first-ever European Cup with a thumping 5-0 win over Inter Milan, in which he supplied goals for Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The rewards for his exploits? The prestigious Ballon d’Or in September, followed by the FIFA Best Award in December and the aforementioned Globe Soccer Award before the turn of the year.
