SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) -  Workers throughout the Central Coast have blowers, brooms, rakes and shovels in motion to clean up the tons of debris that has come down from the aggressive storms over the last several days.

Unlike some past large scale storms, mudslides are not dominating the work.

On the Santa Barbara waterfront there are piles of palm fronds that were stacked up in multiple locations by crews.   

Some picked them up by hand, a very tedious and painstaking task. 

Others used heavy equipment to scoop up what was strewn across Cabrillo Boulevard and Chase Palm Park.

At least two miles of the area has been affected.

A large tree on the Santa Barbara City College property has come down the side of the hill near the Montecito St.- Cliff Drive entrance. It has covered the sidewalk and one lane of traffic. Orange cones are in place to alert drivers. This will take an extensive cutting operation to remove the tree.

Another tree was down in Isla Vista tipping towards a multi-unit property on Trigo.

Wednesday, a vehicle was damaged by a palm tree that leaned over on it along Junipero Plaza during a driving rain.

In many areas, including on Highway 101, drains that were plugged by mud and debris are being cleared out. 

In some areas along the Rincon, that led to lane closures due to flooding.   

Workers were using both hand tools and heavy equipment to open the drains and release the ponding water.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - The popular, safe and sure gift for someone for the holidays can be a gift card if you know their likes, but whether the recipient uses the card is another story.

Many shoppers on the Central Coast are out today with their gift cards that came with the Christmas and other holiday-related celebrations.

With stores generally offering discounts for after-Christmas sales, those gift cards can be a big savings for the user even if they have to add a few dollars of their own.

For stores, it will mean more foot traffic and maybe more sales to close out the year.

On average, the gift cards given were about $50 dollars according to analysts who also say 43 percent of the cards are never used.

Scams can also ruin the mood. 

Make sure your gift card is legitimate and not tampered with especially around the area of the activation numbers.

With that, excited shoppers will be on the move this week.

Al menos ocho personas murieron y otras 18 resultaron heridas en una explosión que tuvo como objetivo una mezquita en la ciudad siria de Homs este viernes, informó el Ministerio de Salud del país.

La agencia estatal de noticias SANA informó que “artefactos explosivos” habían sido colocados en la mezquita Imam Ali Ibn Abi Taleb para atacar a los fieles que asistían a las oraciones de este viernes.

Videos publicados por la agencia estatal mostraron graves daños en el interior de la mezquita y escombros esparcidos por el suelo.

Las fuerzas de seguridad establecieron un cordón alrededor de la mezquita mientras las autoridades comenzaron a investigar y recopilar pruebas sobre el incidente, informó el Ministerio del Interior.

No estaba claro de inmediato quién había perpetrado el ataque, de acuerdo con la oficina de prensa de la provincia de Homs.

Un grupo llamado Ansar al-Sunnah se atribuyó el ataque poco después, pero las autoridades sirias no han hecho comentarios públicos sobre esa afirmación.

Sobrevivientes de la explosión describieron escenas de caos cuando la detonación sacudió la mezquita mientras la gente se reunía para las oraciones de este viernes.

“Con la primera postración vino una enorme explosión. Todos estaban en el suelo; a algunos les volaron la cabeza. Los que estaban a la derecha fueron los más afectados. Muchos resultaron heridos y huyeron, y había una gran multitud”, relató Bashar Al-Issa a SANA.

Jordania, el Líbano, Arabia Saudita y Qatar condenaron el ataque y expresaron sus condolencias a las víctimas.

Siria ha enfrentado una serie de desafíos de seguridad desde que el dictador Bashar al-Assad fue derrocado el año pasado.

Desde entonces, el país ha sido presa de la violencia sectaria mientras intenta reconstruirse y recuperarse de más de una década de guerra civil.

El presidente de Siria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa —exmiembro de al Qaeda—, prometió inclusión y se comprometió a proteger a todas las comunidades diversas de Siria, pero se ha encontrado con la renuencia de algunos grupos que continúan sufriendo actos de violencia selectiva.

El lunes, se produjeron enfrentamientos entre militares del ejército sirio y las Fuerzas Democráticas Sirias (SDF, por sus siglas en inglés), lideradas por kurdos, en la ciudad de Alepo, mientras continuaban las conversaciones de alto nivel sobre los planes para integrar a las SDF en las instituciones estatales de Siria.
