Howard Stern puts an end to the guessing game, signs new deal with SiriusXM

(CNN) — After months of speculation about his future on the radio, Howard Stern has signed a new contract with SiriusXM.

Stern announced his new deal with the satellite radio giant on his show Tuesday morning. “I’m happy to announce that I figured out a way to have it all, more free time, and continuing to be on the radio,” Stern said. “So, yes, we are coming back for three years.”

SiriusXM had no immediate comment on the terms of the new deal.

Stern, 71, had been the subject of rumor-mongering because his current five-year deal is due to expire in a couple of weeks.

In August, the US Sun claimed that “The Howard Stern Show” was “set to be canceled after a stunning 20-year run.” The story also suggested that Stern’s exit might be related to his outspoken criticism of President Trump.

The Sun story drew a lot of attention despite its thin sourcing. A SiriusXM executive then said of Stern and his crew, “We’d love them to stay,” but “it certainly has to make sense” financially.

When Stern returned to his mic after Labor Day, he punked his listeners by having Andy Cohen pretend to take over the show. Several news outlets fell for the prank, much to Stern’s delight. When he returned to the air, Stern said his deal talks have been “fantastic,” but didn’t address his future beyond that.

The contract talks continued out of public view. Stern said Tuesday that he feels “very loyal” to SiriusXM, which has paid him hundreds of millions of dollars for exclusive rights to his content over the years.

Pittsburgh Steelers extend Monday Night Football home win streak to 23 in victory over Miami Dolphins

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers looks to pass during the game.

(CNN) — The Pittsburgh Steelers eased past the Miami Dolphins 28-15 to extend their Monday Night Football home win streak to 23 and remain top of the AFC North with just three games remaining in the NFL regular season.

In freezing 17-degree conditions in Steel City’s Acrisure Stadium, Pittsburgh quarterback Aaron Rodgers put in a stellar performance, throwing 23-of-27 for 224 yards and two touchdowns.

Rodgers was supported by an array of offensive weapons with running backs Kenneth Gainwell and Jaylen Warren combining for 113 yards on the night. Wideouts DK Metcalf and Marquez Valdes-Scantling each had a receiving TD as the Steelers moved to 8-6 on the season.

The Dolphins have become renowned for below-par performances in cold weather, and that trend continued Monday night as Mike McDaniel’s squad registered just three points before the fourth quarter, courtesy of a Riley Patterson field goal, which opened the scoring with 5:11 left in the first half.

But from there it was all Pittsburgh, which racked up 28 straight points.

The Steelers gained the lead for good late in the first half as tight end Connor Heyward received a direct snap and ‘tush pushed’ his way into the end zone from the 1-yard line to give Pittsburgh a 7-3 lead going into halftime.

Valdes-Scantling scored the Steelers’ second touchdown of the night early in the second half, reeling in a 19-yard pass from Rodgers to cap off a six-play, 71-yard drive.

Metcalf – who had three catches for 55 yards on the night – extended Pittsburgh’s lead after wrestling off multiple tackles and impressively galloping into the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown with 5:06 left in the third quarter.

The former Seattle Seahawks receiver’s TD capped off a dismal quarter for the Dolphins, with Miami’s offense gaining -20 total yards. When the fourth quarter got underway, the Dolphins had just five total first downs on the night.

Things only got worse when Steelers tight end Jonnu Smith rushed 14 yards into the end zone, extending the lead to 28-3 and all but ending the contest with 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The Dolphins added two consolation scores late on, courtesy of a pair of touchdown throws from Tua Tagovailoa – who finished the evening 22-of-28 for 253 yards, the two TDs and an interception – to Darren Waller. But it was too little, too late for a Dolphins team that fell to 6-8 and was officially eliminated from playoff contention.

“It’s disappointing we didn’t get the outcome we wanted to, and everything that goes on with the playoffs,” Tagovailoa said afterwards. “When you start the season the way we did, we made it hard on ourselves.”

The result strengthens the Steelers’ grip on the AFC North as they look to fend off the Baltimore Ravens in the division and keep the No. 4 seed in the conference. As inconsistent as Pittsburgh has looked throughout this season, it remains in a strong position with the po

Merriam-Webster’s 2025 word of the year takes aim at poor AI content

By Jack Guy, CNN

(CNN) — “Slop,” a term used to describe low-quality digital content, has been named word of the year by the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

The dictionary defines slop as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence.” A statement from Merriam-Webster cites examples such as absurd videos, talking cats and AI-written books.

Merriam-Webster is the latest in a string of dictionaries to choose words of the year based on our relationship with technology and artificial intelligence. Collins’ word of the year “vibe coding,” Cambridge’s “parasocial” and Oxford’s “rage bait” all reflect contemporary concerns about the effects of tech on our lives.

First used in the 1700s to mean “soft mud,” “slop” then came to mean “food waste” in the 1800s before taking on a more general meaning of “rubbish” or “a product of little or no value,” according to the online Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Merriam-Webster’s statement acknowledges that slop in the modern day divides opinions.

“People found it annoying, and people ate it up,” reads the statement, which goes on to discuss the almost mocking tone behind the term.

“The word sends a little message to AI: when it comes to replacing human creativity, sometimes you don’t seem too superintelligent,” it reads.

Other candidates for word of the year included “gerrymander,” meaning “to divide a state, school district, etc. into political units or election districts that give one group or political party an unfair advantage,” which came to the fore in the United States this year as both Republican and Democrat politicians used redistricting to gain political advantage.

Editors also considered choosing the phrase “touch grass,” which means “to participate in normal activities in the real world especially as opposed to online experiences and interactions.”

While it was previously used as an insult against those perceived to be spending too much time online, the phrase became “something of an aspiration” this year as an increasing number of people took steps to reduce their screen time, said Merriam-Webster’s statement.

Another candidate was “performative,” which the dictionary defines as “made or done for show (as to bolster one’s own image or make a positive impression on others).”

While many things have been described as performative, the most common uses include the idea of a “performative male,” or a man who tries to attract women by doing things that he believes they will like, such as “carrying feminist literature in a tote bag,” said Merriam-Webster.

Last year, the dictionary chose “polarization” as its word of the year, meaning “division into two sharply distinct opposites,” which was heavily used to describe the fraught state of American politics and society.

In 2023, the dictionary chose “authentic” as its word of the year, following a “substantial increase” in online searches for the word thanks to “stories and conversations about AI, celebrity culture, identity, and social media.”

Kraig Pakulski 0 87 Article rating: No rating
