(CNN) — Rob Reiner directed some of the most consequential films in pop culture that won him plenty of accolades.

Except for one of the biggest.

Though his movies, from “Stand By Me” to “When Harry Met Sally…,” were critically and commercially beloved, Reiner was never nominated for a best director Academy Award.

Tributes to the celebrated actor, director and producer have poured in after Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead on Sunday. He was 78 and and she was 67.

Reiner’s filmography included some of the most popular films of the last 50 years and while some of those movies and performers scored nominations and wins, he was never recognized for what is one of the most prestigious awards in Hollywood.

Kathy Bates, who won a best actress Oscar in 1991 for “Misery” which Reiner directed, shared in April during the TCM Classic Film Festival that he told her before the awards show that he didn’t think she would win.

“You said, ‘You can campaign, but you’re not gonna get it,’” Bates said to Reiner. “You said because it’s a horror movie and not likely.”

The film is based on a Stephen King novel of the same name and Bates plays an unhinged fan of a writer whom she holds captive.

Bates noted that Reiner was thrilled when she did win and mimicked him doing a series of fist pumps when it happened.

“Because you deserved it,” Reiner said at the time. “It’s an amazing performance.”

Here are a few of his other films that earned the director acclaim.

“This Is Spinal Tap”

The 1984 mockumentary about a fictional heavy metal band was Reiner’s feature directorial debut and is considered a cult classic.

In September 2025, the sequel he directed, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” dropped and became his final film prior to his death.

“Stand By Me”

Reiner also found success with this project adapted from a novel by Stephen King.

The 1986 drama centers around a friend group of four boys who set out on an adventure in search of a dead body.

It snagged a best adapted screenplay Academy Award nomination while Reiner was nominated by the Golden Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards and the Directors Guild of America for his work, but there were no wins.

“The Princess Bride”

For some fans it’s inconceivable that this 1987 fairy tale comedy only earned a best original song Academy Award nomination for “Storybook Love.”

The song was written and performed by Willy DeVille.

Both the film, which was adapted from the William Goldman novel of the same name, and the tune remain beloved to this day.

“When Harry Met Sally”

By 1989 plenty of directors wouldn’t have minded having what Reiner was having at the time.

That’s because he was credited with helping to relaunch the success of rom-coms at the box office when that year he released “When Harry Met Sally…,” about a man and a woman determined to be friends as they searched for love.

Nora Ephron was nominated for an Academy Award for writing the script, but did not win.

“A Few Good Men”

It was the dialogue heard round the world.

When Jack Nicholson as Colonel Nathan Jessep bellowed to Tom Cruise as Judge Advocate General officer Daniel Kaffee “You can’t handle the truth!” it not only gave Reiner another hit, but it als

New State Laws Bolster Santa Maria’s Student Protection Policies

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – In March of this year, the nation saw a significant increase in activity from the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

In response, Santa Barbara county, city, and school district administrators all doubled down on their policies of protecting all students.

These policies are indiscriminate and transcend any student’s immigration status or that of anyone in their families.

ICE’s official policy is that they do not conduct their activities at any schools, designating them as sensitive areas requiring multiple layers of authorization.

Activities outside of school bounds, but near school properties nonetheless have increased anxieties, causing many parents to allow their children to stay home from school.

In September, Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 98 and Assembly Bill 49, bolstering student protection policies, backing schools by state legislation.

AB 49 requires immigration enforcement officers to possess judicial warrants and valid identification, and it prohibits disclosure of any student records by any agency or its personnel.

SB 98 requires schools to send notifications to their communities any time immigration enforcement is on campus, and it restricts where enforcement officers are allowed to go.

What we know about Nick Reiner, son of Rob and Michele Reiner

(CNN) — When Nick Reiner was photographed alongside his family at the Los Angeles premiere of his father’s comedy musical, “Spinal Tap II,” in September, he wasn’t smiling.

Instead, the son of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner stood impassively for the family portrait alongside his siblings.

Three months later, Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested and jailed on suspicion of murder after his parents were found dead inside their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles Sunday. He’s being held on a $4 million bond.

Reiner has previously been open about his struggles with drug addiction, including homelessness and stints in rehab. He co-wrote the 2015 film “Being Charlie,” a movie inspired by those experiences and directed by his father.

“That made me who I am now, having to deal with that stuff,” he told People magazine in 2016.

‘Being Charlie’

During the promotional tour for his film, “Being Charlie,” Nick Reiner often appeared alongside his father to discuss how he used his own experiences to inform the film.

When they appeared in AOL’s speaker series “Build,” Nick Reiner shared there were “a lot of dark years” as he fought through addiction.

He said he learned to use comedy as a way of coping with some of his experiences in rehab, and later, he channeled it into the film.

Rehab is “tragic and all but the people that are there are not going to want you to throw them a pity party. They’re going to want you to laugh at the situation and make light of it,” he said.

During the same interview, Rob Reiner called the project “the most personal thing I’ve ever done” and talked about working with his son.

“You don’t set out to have a cathartic experience or be therapeutic in some way,” the elder Reiner said. “The fact that we were dealing with things that Nick had gone through and how I had related to it and how his mother had related to it…it forced me to have to see more clearly and understand more deeply what Nick had gone through and I think it forced him to see things that I had experienced during this process.”

The Los Angeles Police Department has declined to share additional details about the investigation into Reiner and Singer Reiner’s death. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has not filed any criminal charges in connection with the case.

“We owe it to their memory to pursue justice and accountability for the lives that were tragically taken,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement.

Santa Barbara City Fire Services in Urgent Need of Upgrades

Kraig Pakulski 0 94 Article rating: No rating

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – Dense housing plans, aging stations and the need for more personnel was all out on the table in a presentation to Santa Barbara City Councilmembers recently.

That led to an allocation of funds to begin planning for specific future actions for the Santa Barbara City Fire. The council unanimously agreed to $100,000 for an immediate station location and facilities master plan.

There are many concerns or needs for upgrades.

That includes changes to fire station 7 on Stanwood Drive, which is aging and can not be replaced at its current site due to earthquake faults.

Also the historic fire station 3 on Sola Street built in 1929.

Fire Chief Chris Mailes says the engine in that station has a clearance of "an inch and a half." He said any new fire engine would not fit.

Males is also concerned about the city's development plans now and in the future that could increase the size and capacity of buildings that house people.

He pointed out there is a lateral spread and a vertical spread they plan for and it relates to the "life safety risk."

The department is also looking at adding a quick response team for medical calls. Right now there are about 8,100 calls a year.

Overall, the department is responding to 12,000 calls a year. In 1993, that number was 5,500.
