SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - High school winter sports are just a couple weeks into the season but San Marcos girls basketball player Jada Ahmad and Laguna Blanca boys soccer player Baylor Wilson are in mid-season form.

Ahmad and Wilson received Athlete of the Week honors at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table luncheon at Harry's.

Ahmad led the Royals to a 3-1 record last week and scored just under 19 points per game.

(Ahmad scored 24 points in a win over Cabrillo and 21 in a victory against Lompoc. Entenza Design).

Wilson went goal-crazy in two victories for the Owls scoring 7 combined goals.

Nipomo High put on brief lockdown after “school shooter” was heard on the intercom Tuesday

NIPOMO, Calif. (KEYT) – Nipomo High was placed on a short secure-in-place protocol after a student was heard over the intercom stating, "school shooter" Tuesday.

"There is no danger to staff or students at this time," shared the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office in a statement to Your News Channel. "The investigation is ongoing, but at this time all indications are that the threat was not malicious and may have been the result of a prank."

According to the Lucia Mar Unified School District, Nipomo High School was immediately placed into the lockdown as law enforcement responded to the scene.

"The classroom where the call originated was quickly identified. Following a brief investigation, the student involved was identified," read a statement from the school district Tuesday shared with Your News Channel.

Central Coast New Tech High was also included in Tuesday's secure-in-place protocol noted the Lucia Mar Unified School District.

Mahaney scored 26 points and 30 points in two wins last week

UC SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - After helping the Gauchos start 2-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2022-23 season, Aidan Mahaney has been named both The Big West and the Lou Henson National Player of the Week. Mahaney averaged 28.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in wins over Long Beach State and Cal State Bakersfield.

Mahaney scored a career-high 26 points in an overtime win against Long Beach State on Thursday night. The senior went 7-16 from the floor and made all 11 of his foul shots. He also grabbed a season-high six rebounds in the contest. The Lafayette, California native followed that performance up by setting a new career-high with a 30-point outing against Cal State Bakersfield. Mahaney was perfect from beyond the arc, going 7-7 while grabbing four boards and dishing out four assists.

Mahaney helped the Gauchos score 100 points in a Big West contest for the first time since Jan. 22, 2021, when they scored 105 against CSUN. It is also the first 30-point game by a Gaucho since Ajay Mitchell scored 39 against UC Riverside on Dec. 30, 2023.

The Gauchos will resume their non-conference slate this Saturday, Dec. 13 as they head to Salt Lake City and take on Utah Valley at the Delta Center in the Salt Lake Slam. The game will tip off at 11 a.m. PT.
