(CNN) — President Donald Trump’s sprawling new East Wing ballroom project has attracted widespread controversy — but promises to solve a problem identified by first families and their social secretaries on both sides of the aisle for decades.

On Thursday, construction of the planned 90,000-square-foot space will take a key step toward becoming a reality when the White House formally seeking approval from the National Capital Planning Commission, the official planning agency for federal land and buildings.

The White House has told the NCPC that the purpose of the expansion is to “establish a permanent, secure event space that would expand its capacity for official state functions” which “eliminates reliance on temporary tents, temporary support facilities, and associated infrastructure strains, and protects the historic integrity and cultural landscape of the White House and its grounds.”

Anyone involved in presidential party planning has had to contend with the lack of a permanent event space for state dinners and other large-scale official affairs at the White House. East Room capacity is around 200 people. Anything bigger needs to move outdoors.

That has required a tent, which in recent years has cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and, when the event is over, the replacement and rehabilitation of the White House lawn, which runs in the tens of thousands, according to a source familiar with White House planning across multiple administrations.

The bill has been footed by the State Department as part of the overall state visit budget.

The National Park Service, which has jurisdiction over White House grounds, commissioned studies for various solutions over the years, which were routinely shelved because there was no political appetite to advocate for a new structure — until now.

Whatever the merits of building a larger ballroom, though, the hurried, heavy-handed and opaque dealings around the project have drawn far- reaching criticism, spawning lawsuits, congressional inquiries and public opprobrium.

NCPC officials on Thursday are due to receive an overview of the project that will include no public testimony in the “information presentation” to the commission that’s stacked with Trump loyalists.

No vote will be taken during the meeting, but the presentation will lay the groundwork for a formal approval process that will eventually include a public comment period.

NCPC has reviewed and offered substantive feedback on other projects on White House grounds in the past, most recently including a renovated White House fence and a tennis pavilion overseen by first lady Melania Trump during the president’s first term — but that was before Trump replaced its members.

Now, there are mounting concerns that the 12-member NCPC will rubber-stamp the plans without a thorough review.

What to watch at an ‘information presentation’

The commission said in an overview of the ballroom project that there will be a focus Thursday on “how the public will see and experience the modernization project from surrounding public spaces.”

(CNN) — At the end of an extended visit with an SEC school he prefers not to name, Tony Annese considered all that he had seen.

Players with lots of recruiting stars next to their names and coaches with lots of zeroes on their paychecks. Smoothie stations ready to replenish calories as quickly as they’d been lost and golf carts stationed to ferry players to class. He turned to his hosts and asked a simple question.

“How,’’ the Ferris State head coach asked the staff, “do you train a team to be tough when they’re entitled to so much?”

He was not being insolent, just genuinely curious.

Annese has spent nearly the entirety of his adult life as a football coach and has never fired up a smoothie station. Instead, he has learned how to bundle up in five layers to stave off the sub-freezing temperatures of a December playoff practice in Michigan and craft rosters out of wherever players happen to live in the four high school districts he’s led.

Annese has made due to the tune of a preposterous 378-66 lifetime record that strings from high school to junior college to college and includes three state titles, one JUCO national title and as of last month, four Division II national championships.

Ferris State has just won its fourth title in five years and has lost just five games during that same span. It is a dynasty, albeit, one that few have heard of.

As Miami and Ole Miss meet in Glendale, Arizona, and Indiana and Oregon square off in Atlanta, the Big Rapids, Michigan, university is about as diametrically opposed from the four schools vying for a college football championship as you can get.

It is gritty, not glamorous. A school lauded by the Carnegie Foundation for being an “Opportunity University,’’ a nod to its accessible education for a diverse and historically underserved student body.

Charter flights don’t carry the football team unless the NCAA is footing the bill for the playoff, and no one is ponying up millions in NIL money. The entire university last year reported revenues totalling $208,470,668. According to the Knight-Newhouse Athletic Database, Oregon athletics alone took in $169,206,109.

Yet, if these college football playoffs have proven anything, it is that football is football. The recruiting stars attached to a player’s name do not guarantee success any more than a coach’s blue-blooded bonafides ensure his greatness.

Top-ranked Indiana is led by a coach who started his career at the Indiana University named for a Pennsylvania town 13 years before taking over the previously hapless IU in Bloomington. Five of his starters followed him from the FBS edges of James Madison and his Heisman-winning quarterback originally committed to Yale.

Pete Golding, who existed as a flowy haired coordinator before Samsoning his locks upon scoring the boss job at Ole Miss, coached a dozen years on the periphery of the big time. He jump-stopped from Cleveland, Mississippi (Delta State) to Greenville, Tennessee (Tusculum) to Hammond, Louisiana (Southeastern Louisiana) to Jackson, Mississippi (Southern Miss) to San Antonio (UTSA) before finally landing in the Oz-ian football land of Tuscaloosa.

And Golding’s quarterback, the one who made like a humanoid video game in the fourth quarter of the Sugar Bowl against Georgia, started at none other than Ferris State.

(CNN) — In recent weeks, President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro have traded insults and threats that have escalated their public feud.

On the ground in Colombia, however, one of the US government’s closest counter-narcotics relationships in the region continues unabated, for now.

Officials at the Colombian national police’s anti-narcotics directorate and the US Drug Enforcement Administration tell CNN they have a close working relationship that includes the exchange of intelligence and having US agents embedded with Colombian forces. The result, the officials say, is record drug seizures and increased pressure on cocaine producers and trafficking organizations.

But there is increasing concern that DEA personnel in Colombia and elsewhere in the region could face safety risks as a result of Trump’s comments about the Colombian president and the Nicolás Maduro raid in Venezuela, according to a person familiar with the agency’s operations.

“This year we have seized 446 tons of cocaine hydrochloride. This means we are seizing more than one ton of cocaine every day,” Colombian Brig. Gen. Ricardo Sánchez-Silvestre told CNN in an interview this week, who called the tally of seizures as “historic.”

“Likewise, we have destroyed more than 3,000 facilities used for producing these substances and narcotics,” Sánchez said. “And what has been important here, first, is the coordinated work with our military forces, and second, the international cooperation with different agencies, with the government of the United States. That cooperation has been essential.”

Trump said he spoke with Petro by phone Wednesday, and struck a seemingly amicable tone, suggesting he even invited Petro to the White House. It’s a dramatic reversal from the pair’s war of words over the past several months. Trump has repeatedly lashed out at Petro, claiming that Colombia isn’t stopping the production and trafficking of drugs to the US, and adding in an October social media post that the flow of drugs continues “despite large scale payments and subsidies from the USA that are nothing more than a long term rip off of America.”

Petro has criticized Trump, including the US military operation to depose Maduro, the Venezuelan leader. Trump has warned that Petro should “watch his ass,” suggesting he could suffer the same fate as Maduro.

That stands in contrast to the view from the Colombian and US agents working to deter the trafficking.

US Drug Enforcement Administration agents highly regard the Colombian National Police, including its specialized DIRAN anti-narcotics unit which has DEA agents embedded for joint missions, current and former law enforcement officials told CNN.

In recent years, the DEA presence in Colombia has grown to become the agency’s largest foreign operation, and agents say that has yielded fruit as Colombia has boosted drug seizures and arrests.

So far the war of words between the US and Colombian leaders hasn’t changed that, a person familiar with agency’s operations said.

The DEA didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Trump has said the US would cut off financial aid to Colombia, but it’s not clear what has transpired through. The US has provided about $210 million in assistance to Colombia this fiscal year, including about $31 million in agricultural support, according to Read more
