Una mujer murió este miércoles en Minneapolis luego de que un agente de ICE, que se encontraba realizando operaciones dirigidas con otros miembros, le disparara mientras ella se encontraba en su vehículo.

La mujer estaba en su vehículo, bloqueando la vía, según el jefe de policía de Minneapolis, Brian O’Hara, quien detalló que, en algún momento, un agente federal se acercó al automóvil y ella comenzó a alejarse conduciendo. Después, se efectuaron disparos y luego el auto se estrelló al costado de la carretera. Un video muestra que momentos después del incidente, vecinos y testigos gritaron y discutieron con los agentes en la calle.

Los agentes de policía de Minneapolis realizaron maniobras de reanimación a la víctima cuando llegaron, dijo O’Hara. Dijo que la mujer recibió un disparo en la cabeza y que fue trasladada al Centro Médico del Condado de Hennepin, donde fue declarada muerta. O’Hara señaló que no había indicios de que la víctima fuera objetivo de una investigación policial.

La víctima fue identificada como Renee Nicole Good, de 37 años, según informó la senadora estadounidense demócrata de Minnesota, Tina Smith.

La madre de la mujer, Donna Ganger, le dijo al periódico que su hija vivía en el área metropolitana de Minneapolis-Saint Paul con su pareja, reportó el Star Tribune.

Ganger dijo que su hija “no es parte de algo así en absoluto”, refiriéndose a los manifestantes que desafían a los agentes de ICE, según el Star Tribune.

“Renee fue una de las personas más amables que he conocido”, dijo Ganger al periódico. “Era extremadamente compasiva. Ha cuidado de personas toda su vida. Era amorosa, indulgente y cariñosa. Era un ser humano increíble”.

Good era originaria de Colorado, dijo un miembro de la familia a la filial de CNN KUSA, y agregó que la familia está conmocionada y extremadamente enojada.

CNN se ha puesto en contacto con Ganger.

El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) aseguró en un comunicado que el tiroteo que derivó en la muerte de la mujer se trató de una acción de “defensa propia”.

“Un agente de ICE, temiendo por su vida, la de sus compañeros agentes de policía y la seguridad del público, disparó en defensa propia”, señaló el comunicado. “Usó su entrenamiento y salvó su propia vida y la de sus compañeros agentes”. Por separado, la secretaria de Seguridad Nacional, Kristi Noem, dijo que la mujer atacó a los agentes de ICE con su automóvil.

Por su parte, el alcalde Jacob Frey, rechazó la versión de Noem durante una conferencia de prensa el miércoles.

They chanted the name Renne Nicole Good.

This protest and others like it erupted nationwide following viral video showing Good, 37, being fatally shot in Minnesota.

One speaker said he was shocked that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would shoot a white woman in her car.

Others talked about how disturbing it was to seeing what happened on what has become viral video.

Chelsea Lancaster, who described herself as an SB Resiste community organizer, looked like she was close to tears behind a mask that said Love. 

"We are asking you to get out here and help us you all are living history right now. They couldn't live stream fascist Germany we are watching in real time what is happening. They said the revolutions would not be televised but it is  where is everybody, get out of your comfort zone because they are coming for you, too," said Lancaster.

Some local elected leaders including Santa Barbara City Coucil member Wendy Santamaria spoke too.

Some protesters on the public sidewalk projected members of the Trump Administration and Jeffrey Epstein onto the Santa Barbara County Courthouse walls.

They are urging residents to stay informed and get involved in local resistance groups including @805Undocufund, @805RepreuestaRapida, @SBResiste and @Carp_sinfronteras.

(CNN) — A prominent tycoon wanted by United States federal prosecutors for allegedly running one of Asia’s largest transnational criminal networks has been arrested and extradited to China, Cambodian authorities said Wednesday.

Chen Zhi, 38, a national of China and Cambodia, was extradited on Tuesday after a months-long investigation by the two countries, Cambodia’s Interior Ministry said in a statement. Chen’s Cambodian citizenship had been revoked, the ministry added.

The operation was conducted at the request of the Chinese government, the ministry said, though it is unclear what charges Chen faces in China. He was arrested alongside two other Chinese nationals.

Chen is the founder and chairman of Prince Group, which bills itself as one of Cambodia’s biggest conglomerates with investments in luxury real estate, banking services, hotels, and major construction developments.

But US federal prosecutors say his business empire was fueled by forced labor and cryptocurrency scams that conned victims the world over and at one point were allegedly earning Chen and his associates $30 million every day.

In October, the US Treasury Department and UK Foreign Office sanctioned Prince Group and dozens of its affiliates, designating them transnational criminal organizations. Chen was charged in absentia in New York with money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy, along with several associates.

Prosecutors also seized $15 billion in cryptocurrency from Chen following a years-long investigation, in what the Justice Department said was the largest forfeiture action in its history.

Since the indictment was announced, several other jurisdictions including Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan announced seizures or freezes of hundreds of millions of dollars in assets linked to Chen.

CNN has reached out to lawyers representing Prince Group for comment on Chen’s arrest. Prince Group has previously denied engaging in unlawful activity, calling the allegations “baseless” and “aimed at justifying the unlawful seizure of assets,” according to a statement published on its website.

CNN has reached out to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Public Security Ministry for comment.

Cambodia has recently come under more pressure to act against the scam networks operating within its borders. In its statement, the interior ministry said Chen’s arrest was “within the scope of cooperation in combating transnational crime.”

The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime has said the criminal networks that run the scam hubs are evolving at an unprecedented scale, despite highly publicized crackdowns last year.

What does arrest mean for US charges?

It is unclear what Chen’s extradition to China will mean for the US investigation. China does not have an extradition treaty with the US and the two countries are embroiled in a deepening geopolitical and economic rivalry.

The global scam industry, much of it centered in Southeast Asia, is estimated to be worth between $50 billion and $70 billion. In 2023 it conned victims in the United States alone out of at least $10 billion dollars.

(Reuters) — A mountain gorilla has given birth to twins in war-ravaged eastern Congo, a national park said on Wednesday, in what it described as “a major event” for the endangered subspecies.

The birth of the two male gorillas to a mother named Mafuko was discovered on January 3 and the twins “appeared to be in healthy condition at the time of the observation,” Virunga National Park said in a statement.

Spanning more than 3,000 square miles, Africa’s oldest national park is home to many of the world’s last mountain gorillas, yet much of the park is under rebel control and fighting has accelerated forest loss.

Caring for twins can be challenging, “particularly during the early months when infants are entirely dependent on their mother for care and transport,” the park’s statement said.

The newborns are being closely monitored to help ensure their survival, it said.

Pictures released by the park’s press service showed the 22-year-old Mafuko holding the two baby gorillas, sitting on the ground and partly obscured by branches with green leaves.

Mafuko was born into the Kabirizi family but joined the Bageni family six years after her mother was killed by “armed individuals” in 2007, the park’s statement said.

“The birth of these twins represents a major event for the dynamics of the Bageni family and for ongoing conservation efforts to support the continued growth of the endangered mountain gorilla population within Virunga National Park,” the statement said.

In total, Mafuko has now had seven offspring, including a set of twins which died a week after being born in 2016. The Bageni family now counts 59 members and is the largest in the park, the statement said.
