SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - The now closed Anchor Rose restaurant space has become available for the next restaurant operator who wants to take over the two-story waterfront location.

Interested parties have been working fast to get their proposals in to the City of Santa Barbara's Waterfront Department.

The lease ended for the Anchor Rose on December 31st.

The city confirms the Anchor Rose was still open with customers after the lease deadline and was then ordered to cease operations.

The site at the historic Maritime Museum, has both an upstairs and a downstairs dining area along with two patios on top and one on the bottom. Proposals coming in could be for both sites or two separate operations.

They will be evaluated by the staff and when an agreement is reached it will be brought to the Harbor Commission meeting. The location has scenic views of the harbor and over 700 parking spots nearby.

It was formerly occupied by Chucks Waterfront Grill and the Endless Summer Bar Cafe, Chomp on the Rocks and Salt on the Beach.

Dart Coffee is in a corner of the building and patio. It remains open with a separate lease.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) - With the help of a special grant, a new look will come to the streets of Santa Barbara in a one-of-a-kind art project.

Recently a demonstration was held at the Saturday Farmers Market on Carrillo St. and State St. where the colorful and cultural project will ultimately take place.

Another one takes place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Lead artists Eddy Jimenez and Irene Ramirez are providing an introduction to Zapotec rug weaving, natural dye techniques, and the cultural symbolism embedded in traditional designs.

Textiles will be on display along with educational materials, and live demonstrations.

The worksmanship will reflect generations of cultural knowledge and craftsmanship.

This is all part of the Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative. Santa Barbara was one of only four cities to get this grant in the U.S.

The City of Santa Barbara, in collaboration with the County Office of Arts & Culture, has been awarded $100,000 from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture Executive Director Sarah York Rubin says there will be designs that will likely show community, the ocean and other aspects of the people and region that will, "integrate those ideas into a design that's a design for the street."

Beyond painting the street with these designs, there will also be work on the surrounding lights.

The asphalt art installation goal is to revitalize the State and Carrillo intersection and enhance pedestrian safety.

The final designs will be made in the coming weeks with the painting taking place in the next few months.

La presidenta encargada de Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, dijo este miércoles que el país vive “un nuevo momento político” luego del ataque militar de Estados Unidos que derivó en la captura del presidente Nicolás Maduro y de su esposa, Cilia Flores, quienes fueron llevados de Caracas a Nueva York para enfrentar cargos de narcotráfico y armas, que ambos rechazan.

Durante un acto público con otros altos funcionarios, Rodríguez insistió en criticar el operativo realizado por Estados Unidos, que describió como “una mancha” en la relación bilateral, pero aseguró que Venezuela “no está en guerra”.

“Quiero darles la bienvenida a un nuevo momento político para nuestro país, un momento donde tengamos la más alta conciencia de lo que significa la soberanía de Venezuela, nuestra integridad territorial, la independencia nacional, que son virtudes superiores de una República”, dijo.

“Venezuela no está en guerra, Venezuela es un país de paz que fue agredido por una potencia nuclear”, agregó.

Días después de asumir como presidenta encargada, Rodríguez también envió mensajes a la oposición. Por un lado, la acusó de haber solicitado la incursión de Estados Unidos en Venezuela. Por otro, también la llamó a un acercamiento.

“Llamo a los opositores de Venezuela. Espero que en conjunto y en unión avancemos hacia una dirección, a sanar lo que han sido las consecuencias del extremismo y del fascismo en Venezuela”, dijo.

Los principales líderes de las fuerzas de oposición en Venezuela, quienes rechazan promover actos de violencia o el fascismo, han celebrado el operativo de Estados Unidos y el derrocamiento de Maduro.

También han llamado a que el exembajador Edmundo González Urrutia, el candidato que compitió contra Maduro en las controvertidas elecciones de 2024 y quien asegura ser el verdadero vencedor de la contienda, asuma la presidencia de Venezuela.

El Gobierno de Estados Unidos, sin embargo, ha dicho que la oposición no tiene el respaldo suficiente para dirigir Venezuela y que no hay condiciones para que se lleven a cabo elecciones al menos durante los próximos 30 días.

Algunos analistas consultados por CNN consideran que Estados Unidos busca que la presidencia encargada al mando de Rodríguez estabilice Venezuela antes de que pueda convocarse a nuevos comicios.

El Gobierno de Trump está retirando a Estados Unidos del tratado fundamental que sustenta la cooperación internacional sobre el cambio climático, según un memorando difundido por la Casa Blanca la noche de este miércoles y una publicación en redes sociales.

Tal acción, si tiene éxito, dejaría a EE.UU. fuera de las conversaciones internacionales sobre el cambio climático y podría elevar las tensiones con los aliados estadounidenses para quienes la acción climática es una prioridad.

El acuerdo en cuestión es la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático, o CMNUCC, a la que EE.UU. se incorporó y que el Congreso ratificó en 1992, cuando George H. W. Bush ocupaba la Casa Blanca. El tratado no obliga a EE.UU. a reducir el uso de combustibles fósiles ni la contaminación, sino que establece el objetivo de estabilizar la cantidad de contaminación climática en la atmósfera a un nivel que “prevenga una interferencias antropogénicas (causadas por el ser humano) peligrosas con el sistema climático”.

La CMNUCC también estableció un proceso de negociaciones entre países que dio lugar a las conocidas cumbres climáticas anuales de la ONU. Bajo el marco de este acuerdo se negociaron el Protocolo de Kyoto en 1995 y el Acuerdo de París en 2015, dos momentos monumentales de cooperación global y avances hacia la limitación de la dañina contaminación climática.

Además, el tratado exige la presentación anual de un inventario nacional de emisiones contaminantes, un requisito que el Gobierno de Trump omitió de manera notable este año.

La salida del tratado climático, junto con la retirada de numerosas agencias internacionales, representa un nuevo retroceso de Estados Unidos en materia de cooperación internacional.

“No vamos a seguir gastando recursos, capital diplomático ni el peso legitimador de nuestra participación en instituciones que son irrelevantes o entran en conflicto con nuestros intereses”, afirmó Marco Rubio, secretario de Estado, en un comunicado. “Buscamos cooperación cuando sirva a nuestro pueblo y nos mantendremos firmes cuando no lo haga”.

El exsecretario de Estado y enviado climático de EE.UU. John Kerry criticó duramente la medida como algo esperado, la calificó de perjudicial para los intereses estadounidenses a nivel global y la describió como “un regalo para China y una carta de ‘salga libre de la cárcel’ para países y contaminadores que quieren evadir responsabilidades”.

El presidente Trump retiró a EE.UU. del Acuerdo de París por segunda vez en su primer día en el cargo. Con la decisión anunciada este miércoles, EE.UU. se convertirá en el primer país en retirarse del tratado climático, ya que prácticamente todos los países son miembros, según el Consejo de Defensa de los Recursos Naturales, un grupo ambientalista.

Debido a que el Senado ratificó la CMNUCC en 1992, existe un área gris legal sobre si el presidente Donald Trump puede retirar unilateralmente al país de la misma. Sin embargo, si el Congreso interviene, probablemente la mayoría republicana respaldaría la medida.

Si se concreta, la retirada impediría que Estados Unidos participe oficialmente en futuras cumbres climáticas anuales y podría poner en duda el compromiso del país con otros acuerdos de larga data de los que es parte. También podría llevar a que otras naciones reevalúen sus compromisos con la CMNUCC y las conversaciones climáticas de la ONU, lo que pondría en riesgo no solo el progreso climático de EE.UU., sino también el de otros países.

Una salida estadounidense también podría dificultar que un futuro presidente vuelva a incorporar al país al Acuerdo de París, ya que este se negoció bajo el paraguas de la CMNUCC.

(CNN) — In the aftermath of an ICE officer shooting and killing a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday, President Donald Trump claimed in a post online that video from the incident showed the woman “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over” the officer.

The Department of Homeland Security, in the initial wake of the shooting, also said in a statement that the woman was attempting to run over officers with her car “to kill them.”

US Sen. Tina Smith, a Minnesota Democrat, later identified the woman as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a news conference in Texas on Wednesday that “a woman attacked” officers and “attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle” after the officers got stuck in the snow.

Three videos taken of the scene and reviewed by CNN, however, show nuance. What took place prior to the shooting remains unclear.

What the videos show

In one video posted online of the shooting, the woman can first be seen in her car, which is still and perpendicular in the middle of a street.

The officer who would soon shoot the woman can be seen walking behind her vehicle, toward the front of the car. Another person, who is not wearing a uniform, can be seen following that officer and appears to have been filming on their phone.

Two federal officers in a truck then pull up to the car as the woman was waving her hand out the window. The officers exit their truck and approach the woman’s car.

“Get out of the car,” the officers approaching the woman’s driver-side door can be heard repeatedly saying. “Get out of the f**king car.”

One of the two officers can be seen pulling on the woman’s driver-side door as the other officer reaches the front of the car from the other side. The car then starts to move in reverse as one officer continues pulling on the car door, and the other officer is in front of part of the vehicle.

The vehicle begins to move forward and, at the same time, the third officer who approached the car pulls out his pistol and points it at the woman while moving away from the front of the car.

A video from a different angle, obtained and reviewed by CNN, seems to show the car making contact with the officer before he fired his gun the first time.

The first video doesn’t capture the car making contact with the officer, but his body is seen moving out from the front of the vehicle and to the driver’s side of the car.

The officer, who was out of the vehicle’s path, then fired two more shots.

Video then shows the officer holster his pistol as the car drives forward before it accelerates and crashes into a car and a pole on the side of the street.

The firing officer and the person who appeared to be filming him can be seen moving toward the woman and her car. The video shows the officer later walking away from the car and telling others to call 911.
