Un avión de Frontier Airlines atropelló a un peatón en una pista del Aeropuerto Internacional de Denver este viernes por la noche, lo que obligó a abortar el despegue, informó un portavoz de la aerolínea a CNN.

El vuelo 4345, un Airbus A321, partió de Denver con destino a Los Ángeles y transportaba 224 pasajeros y 7 tripulantes, según divulgó Frontier Airlines en un comunicado. Su salida estaba programada para las 22:39 hora local.

De acuerdo con la aerolínea, mientras el avión despegaba, “la aeronave atropelló a un peatón en la pista durante el despegue”. “Se detectó humo en la cabina y los pilotos abortaron el despegue. Posteriormente, los pasajeros fueron evacuados de forma segura mediante toboganes de evacuación como medida de precaución”.

El aeropuerto de Denver informó que el vuelo de Frontier “reportó haber atropellado a un peatón” aproximadamente a las 23:19 hora local.

Se produjo un breve incendio en un motor que fue rápidamente extinguido por el Departamento de Bomberos de Denver, indicó el aeropuerto en un comunicado emitido la madrugada del sábado.

El audio de control de tráfico aéreo, compartido por la aplicación ATC.com, captó el momento en que un piloto del vuelo de Frontier les dijo a los controladores que el avión había “chocado con alguien”.

(CNN) — Omaha may be a blue dot in a sea of Nebraska red, but that point of political pride has sparked a bitter divide among Democrats in one of the nation’s most closely watched congressional races.

In the Nebraska primary on Tuesday, the Democratic campaign to replace Republican Rep. Don Bacon has become something of a proxy war over which Democratic candidate would protect — or risk — the state’s unique method of awarding electoral votes in presidential elections.

The retirement of Bacon, one of only three House Republicans who won in districts that Kamala Harris also carried in 2024, created an open seat and attractive terrain for Democrats to target in their effort to win control of Congress in November.

Two of the leading Democratic hopefuls in the race — John Cavanaugh and Denise Powell — have been at each other’s throats for weeks, with dueling ads, yard signs and contentious neighborhood disputes.

Powell argues that electing Cavanaugh, a state senator, to Congress would mean he could no longer fight against future Republican efforts to change state election law and make Nebraska a winner-take-all system like 48 other states. That would threaten the blue dot, as the state’s 2nd Congressional District has colloquially become known.

“We have fought so hard for fair representation, our Blue Dot, and to retain that electoral power,” Powell said Friday in a statement. “We cannot afford a candidate whose campaign hands Republicans the votes to gerrymander us into oblivion.”

The Democratic quarreling in Nebraska over a unique state issue stands apart from the ideological fights in other competitive races across the country. Still, the primary has attracted a deluge of outside spending from interest groups, with more than $6 million in advertising alone, according to AdImpact.

Two outside progressive super PACs have invested more than $1 million on the Omaha airwaves seeking to amplify Powell’s argument: If Cavanaugh is elected to Congress and gives up his position in the state legislature, Republican Gov. Jim Pillen would fill the seat with someone who would vote to eliminate the blue dot.

In response, Cavanaugh has aired ads of his own, calling his opponent “Dark Money Denise.”

His campaign and allies have planted yard signs across the district vowing to “stand up to Trump and defend the blue dot.” Six fellow state senators signed an open letter to voters last month saying the attacks were misguided and Democrats were likely to win other legislative races.

“We stand with John Cavanaugh because we can protect the Blue Dot and existing abortion access, while sending a strong, experienced legislator to Congress,” the senators said in their letter. “It is disingenuous to boil the fate of Nebraskans down to one person.”

Why the dot matters to Democrats

Nebraska and Maine are the only two states in the country that divide Electoral College votes by congressional district rather than a statewide winner-take-all formula.

Under the system, the statewide winner receives two electoral votes, and the rest are split, one apiece, among the leading vote-getters in each district.

Samoudi fue liberado la semana pasada de una prisión israelí, donde estuvo recluido durante un año.

Nunca fue acusado de ningún delito. Permaneció detenido bajo órdenes de detención administrativa, las cuales permiten a las fuerzas israelíes encarcelar a palestinos sin juicio por períodos de hasta seis meses. Estas órdenes pueden renovarse indefinidamente.

Decenas de otros presos palestinos también han salido de las cárceles israelíes en estado de extrema desnutrición.

El Tribunal Supremo de Israel ordenó mejorar las condiciones carcelarias tras dictaminar en septiembre que el Estado no satisfacía las necesidades nutricionales básicas de los reclusos.

(CNN) — A Frontier Airlines plane reportedly struck a pedestrian on a runway at Denver International Airport late Friday, forcing it to abort its takeoff, a spokesperson for the carrier told CNN.

Flight 4345, an Airbus A321, was departing from Denver en route to Los Angeles and carried 224 passengers and 7 crew members, Frontier Airlines said in a statement. It was scheduled to depart at 10:39 p.m. local time.

As the plane was departing, “the aircraft reportedly struck a pedestrian on the runway during takeoff,” the airline said. “Smoke was reported in the cabin and the pilots aborted takeoff. Passengers were then safely evacuated via slides as a matter of precaution.”

The Denver airport said the Frontier flight “reported striking a pedestrian” at approximately 11:19 p.m. local time. There was a brief engine fire that was quickly extinguished by the Denver Fire Department, the airport said in a statement early Saturday.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and passengers were taken to the terminal, the airport added.

CNN has reached out to the Denver Fire Department and Denver Sheriff’s Department for more information.

Air traffic control audio, shared by the ATC.com app, captured the moment a pilot from the Frontier flight told controllers the plane “hit somebody.” Seconds later, a controller said emergency vehicles were being dispatched. “There was an individual walking across the runway,” the pilot can be heard saying.

The pilot told controllers there were 231 people and more than 21,000 pounds of fuel on board, according to the audio clip.

Data from flight-tracking website Flightradar24 showed the plane was accelerating at about 146 miles an hour at roughly 11:15 p.m. local time, before it aborted takeoff.

“We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities,” Frontier said. “We are deeply saddened by this event.”

Runway 17L will remain closed while the investigation is conducted, the airport said.

(CNN) — In Orlando, around 1,000 teenagers showed up to the Icon Park area on a Saturday night last month, spurring fights and a substantial police response that led to nine arrests on charges including battery on an officer, resisting arrest and trespassing.

In Washington, DC, a group of about 200 teens gathered at a park in the Navy Yard neighborhood this spring, leading to gunfire, disorderly conduct and robbery.

And in New York, hundreds of teens flooded a mall in the Bronx in February, trashing stores and berating mall employees.

The incidents are just a few examples of what’s become known as “teen takeovers,” the term for a mass gathering of rowdy youngsters in a public space like a mall or park. Spread by social media flyers or mass messages beforehand, the takeovers have on occasion spiraled into chaos, with reports of fights, robberies, gunshots and general disruption.

The takeovers seen in Orlando, Washington, New York, and across the US show how social media has supercharged these gatherings into something more significant.

“It’s a new form, but it’s not a new substance,” said Thaddeus Johnson, a senior fellow at the Council on Criminal Justice think tank, comparing teen takeovers to the flash mobs of a decade ago. “What’s new is the scale and how these things are networked.”

Of course, large gatherings of teens have long caused consternation and fear among the olds. In general, juvenile crimes are more often committed with others, and images of roaming throngs of teens has an outsized presence in media and in the public’s amygdala.

The ultimate fear is something like what happened in Oklahoma last weekend, when a “Sunday Funday” party promoted on social media drew young revelers to a lakeside picnic pavilion outside Oklahoma City. There, an argument among attendees escalated into a shootout between rival gang members, leaving one person dead and more than 20 wounded, according to police.

With summer on the horizon – when school is out and crime typically increases – police and officials have taken steps to crack down on large gatherings of teens.

Some police departments have begun scouring social media for teen takeover plans and are treating these events more like civil unrest.

“Once we see these large gatherings, we put eyes on them and officers on them,” DC Metro Police Assistant Chief Ramey Kyle told the Police Executive Research Forum, a national police research and policy organization.

“If the kids try to break off a little bit, we try to have an officer within sight of them. When we do that, we have a lot fewer fights, robberies, and shootings.”
