Texas y Maine son estadísticamente dispares, al menos en cuanto a población se refiere. Mientras que uno supera los 31 millones de habitantes, el otro apenas rebasa las 1,4 millones de personas.

Sin embargo, a pesar de esta enorme diferencia, ambos estados tienen algo en común: en la última semana, agentes federales mataron a inmigrantes latinos durante operativos de inmigración en dos de sus ciudades (Houston y Biddeford, respectivamente), lo que ha dado paso a protestas de comunidades latinas/hispanas, estadounidenses y otras que exigen el fin de la violencia de las autoridades migratorias de EE.UU., entre ellas el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés).

La ciudad de Houston, en el estado de Texas, fue el lugar donde el pasado 7 de julio un agente de inmigración mató a tiros al inmigrante mexicano Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, de 52 años, durante una parada de tránsito donde se realizaba un operativo federal.

Las comunidades de la ciudad reaccionaron de inmediato al fallecimiento, saliendo a protestar y a exigir rendición de cuentas por este suceso. Los manifestantes han salido a las calles prácticamente a diario desde que la muerte de Salgado Araujo la semana pasada.

La comunidad latina en Texas se cuenta por millones. De acuerdo con las cifras más recientes del Censo de EE.UU., la población extranjera en Texas es de 5,7 millones (es decir, alrededor del 18 % de la población total del estado).

La gran mayoría de esa población extranjera proviene de América Latina. Según las estimaciones del Censo, la población extranjera latina en Texas asciende a 3,6 millones de personas.

De esos 3,6 millones de latinos en Texas, unos 516.378 viven en la ciudad de Houston, en su mayoría mexicanos, pero miles más de otros países de la región. Además de la mexicana, estas son las cinco nacionalidades más numerosas de latinos en Houston:

• Hondureña: 71.461 personas
• Salvadoreña: 58.805
• Cubana: 42.263
• Guatemalteca: 35.588
• Venezolana: 34.383

El lunes, menos de una semana después de la muerte de Salgado Araujo, Joan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, nacido en Colombia y de 26 años, murió en Biddeford, Maine, al recibir disparos de un agente de ICE.

Durán Guerrero salió de su casa y se dirigía a su trabajo, como en el caso de Salgado Araujo. Minutos después murió en el tiroteo que involucra a las fuerzas del orden. El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) dijo que el agente disparó su arma “temiendo por la seguridad pública”; no obstante, miembros de la comunidad calificaron al inmigrante colombiano como un “hombre bueno” y “trabajador” que vivía con su esposa e hija de tres años.

Así como el caso de Houston, los miembros de las comunidades de Maine han salido esta semana a manifestarse contra las autoridades de inmigración de Estados Unidos.

Según datos del Censo de EE.UU., la población extranjera que vive en Maine es de 56.448 personas (o sea, 4 % de la población total del estado).
