Two arrested in Italy after armed highway robbery on security truck

(CNN) — Two men are set to appear in court in Italy following a dramatic armed robbery on an armored security truck on a highway on Monday.

A masked gang attacked the vehicle with Kalashnikov rifles and robbed a student of her car as they tried to escape in a heist attempt that concluded in a firefight with the Carabinieri, the Italian police.

The group, composed of at least six people, fired several shots at the Carabinieri, with one officer sustaining an injury.

Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto described the event as “a bloody incident, with an exchange of fire, and an absolute priority: protecting the community endangered by the madness of criminals.”

Crosetto congratulated the officers on their effective response. “Sincere thanks to all the men and women in uniform who, every day, defend us and ensure the safety of our country,” he said in a statement.

The gang stopped a vehicle in the road in front of the armored truck belonging to security company Battistolli, before setting it on fire, forcing traffic to stop.

The security company described the widely shared footage of the incident as shocking, adding, “We express our closeness and solidarity to our colleagues, the bystanders involved, and their families.”

It highlighted a surge in incidents of this nature, and called for more to be done to improve security. “In the last two years, the Battistolli Group has suffered 14 attacks, a situation that requires attention and concrete action,” it said.

The suspects, two men aged 38 and 62, will be charged with a range of offenses including attempted murder, aggravated robbery and possession of war weapons, according to Italy’s public broadcaster RAI. The injured officer is still being treated in hospital, it added.

Netanyahu to discuss potential Iran strikes with Trump as Washington and Tehran resume talks

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

By Tal Shalev, CNN

(CNN) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to discuss possible military options against Iran with US President Donald Trump during his visit to Washington this week as Israel prepares contingencies should US-Iran talks collapse, according to two Israeli sources.

Israel remains skeptical that nascent negotiations between the US and Iran will succeed, one of the sources said, but is pressing to ensure its interests are protected – as well as to preserve Israel’s freedom of military action under any potential agreement.

Netanyahu plans to present Trump with fresh intelligence on Iran’s military capabilities, one of the sources said.

“Israel is worried about Iran’s progress in restoring its ballistic missile stockpiles and capabilities to its status before the 12-day war,” the source said, adding that the Israeli assessment is that without action, Iran could possess 1,800-2,000 ballistic missiles within weeks or months.

CNN is unable to verify the claims. Iranian officials have repeatedly said that while Tehran doesn’t want war, it is ready for it.

Before departing for Washington, Netanyahu said Iran is the “first and foremost” issue on the agenda for his meeting with Trump on Wednesday, the seventh meeting between the two leaders since the start of Trump’s second term.

“On this trip, we will discuss a series of issues: Gaza, the region, but first and foremost, the negotiations with Iran,” Netanyahu said as he boarded his aircraft. “I will present the president with our views regarding the essential principles of the negotiations – principles that, in our eyes, are vital not only for Israel but for anyone in the world who desires peace and security in the Middle East.”

The upcoming meeting follows a series of high-level exchanges in recent weeks. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and Intelligence Division head Maj. Gen. Shlomi Binder visited the Pentagon in Washington last month, while presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Netanyahu and top security officials in Jerusalem last week.

Israel has tried to push the US to ensure that any deal with Iran include Tehran giving up its stockpile of enriched uranium, ceasing enrichment altogether, placing limits on its ballistic missile program and ending its support for regional proxies. The list matched a set of earlier US demands for a broader set of discussions about Iran’s military capabilities and regional activities.

But Iran has insisted it’s only willing to discuss the nuclear file. Over the weekend, Trump signaled that he may accept a deal that leaves out the other issues. Asked by a reporter on board Air Force One if an agreement with Tehran is acceptable if it only covers nuclear, he said, “Yeah, that would be acceptable, but the one thing and right up front, no nuclear weapons.”

The worst-case scenario for the Israeli prime minister is “a narrow nuclear deal in which the US settles for restrictions on enrichment alone.” Danny Citrinowicz, an Iran expert at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies, wrote in an article in the Israel Hayom newspaper.

“From Netanyahu’s standpoint, the two preferred options are either the military defeat of Iran through American force, or what he sees as a conceptual defeat, namely an agreement so comprehensive that it effectively dismantles the regime’

Progressive Analilia Mejia, a Bernie Sanders ally, poised to win New Jersey special election after rival concedes

By Molly English, CNN

(CNN) — Analilia Mejia is poised to win the special primary in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District in a tight race over former Rep. Tom Malinowski, a major win for an ally of Sen. Bernie Sanders and other progressives.

Malinowski conceded on Tuesday in a statement in which he gave Mejia “unequivocal credit for running a positive campaign and for inspiring so many voters on Election Day.”

A win by Mejia, who served as political director on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, is a major success for national progressive leaders who had backed her run. Thursday’s primary to replace now-Gov. Mikie Sherrill was seen as an early testing ground for the debates that will shape the Democratic push to retake the US House in this year’s midterms.

“Like many Democrats in this moment, I am not only appalled at MAGA, at Trumpism, at Donald Trump’s administration – their overreach, their corruption, their blatant hypocrisy – but I’m also ticked off at my own Democratic leadership,” she told CNN during the campaign.

Trailing the top two vote-getters were former Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way and Essex County commissioner Brendan Gill, among a ballot of more than a dozen Democratic primary candidates.

Meija will face Republican Randolph Township councilman Joe Hathaway, who ran unopposed, in the general election on April 16, and will be favored in a district that voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris by nearly nine percentage points in 2024.
