Team USA won two gold medals at the Olympics on Sunday, but a shocking crash on the ski slopes cast a somber note over an otherwise celebratory day. American athlete Lindsey Vonn fractured her leg in a downhill race — though many agree that her journey, despite its ending, is anything but a failure.

Here’s what else you need to know to get up to speed and on with your day.

1⃣ Super Bowl

Celebrations are underway in Seattle, Washington, after the Seahawks secured a 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX. It’s the second Super Bowl title for Seattle, which last won 12 years ago. Sunday’s game was dominated by the Seahawks’ outstanding defense, giving New England quarterback Drake Maye barely any time to breathe in the pocket. At halftime, Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny delivered an energetic performance featuring his biggest hits, powerful imagery and theatrical nods to songs and symbols from throughout his Spanish-language catalog. Several huge stars, including Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, made appearances.

2⃣ Nancy Guthrie

The search for the missing mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie is intensifying ahead of a reported ransom deadline at 5 p.m. local time in Arizona. Purported ransom notes sent to several media outlets threaten Nancy Guthrie’s life and demand $6 million in Bitcoin in exchange for her safe return. Nancy’s children posted a video on social media over the weekend with a direct plea to the possible captor, saying, “We will pay.” Investigators also returned to Nancy’s home on Sunday, but have still not publicly identified any suspects linked to her disappearance just over a week ago.

3⃣ Epstein files

Members of Congress can begin reviewing unredacted versions of the Jeffrey Epstein files at the Department of Justice starting today, according to a letter obtained by CNN. This comes as the department’s recent release of more than 3 million Epstein-related documents is shedding light on the late sex offender — and his links to billionaires, royals and government officials in the US and abroad. In the coming hours, the lawmakers will be permitted to view the files, but no outside electronic devices will be allowed. It remains unclear whether any of the information reviewed will be shared publicly.

4⃣ SpaceX

Elon Musk appears to be turning his focus, at least for now, from creating a settlement on Mars to the more immediate goal of sending humans to live on the Moon. In a statement on X on Sunday, the billionaire said his company, SpaceX, has shifted its priorities to building “a self-growing city on the Moon,” arguing that it could be achieved in less than a decade, compared with more than 20 years for a similar plan on Mars. Musk said the company remains committed to building a Mars city and will begin d

Kraig Pakulski 0 22 Article rating: No rating

We asked a dietitian to build a meal plan for the new US food guidelines. Here’s what it looks like

(CNN) — The new food pyramid has turned things upside down.

Literally speaking, the image representing the newest Dietary Guidelines for Americans is itself flipped from the pyramid of the past. But the US Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture also made some significant changes to the more recent guidelines, depicted not by the food pyramid but by the circular MyPlate.

And how do the new guidelines compare with the frequently lauded Mediterranean diet? That lauded meal plan also offers differing guidance and points of emphasis.

With so much nuanced and conflicting advice among those three nutrition plans, it can be hard to know what to eat on any particular day.

Dietitian Natalie Mokari, who works with clients in her North Carolina practice to help them eat for better nutrition, built a day of eating under each of the three approaches –– the new food pyramid, MyPlate and the Mediterranean diet –– so you can see the differences, the similarities and what might work for you.

What do I eat for breakfast?

Each plan takes a little bit different of a shape when it comes to carbohydrates.

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes whole grains like brown rice, whole-grain breads and pastas, quinoa and oats, which is why this breakfast is based in steel-cut oats, Mokari said.

The Mediterranean diet can be tricky for people who are watching their carbs, but it can be adjusted to work for the individual, she added.

MyPlate recommended that carbohydrates make up a little more than a quarter of the plate. That plate represents a full day of eating, not every meal, Mokari said. That’s why breakfast is low-fat yogurt and fruit with granola added in.

The new food pyramid emphasizes more carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables, and less from grains, especially refined grains. The carbohydrates from this breakfast are coming from the whole-grain toast but also the spinach and fruit.

“There’s a little confusion that it’s maybe a low-carb diet, but it’s really not,” Mokari said.

What’s for lunch?

The new foods pyramid calls for three servings of vegetables and two of fruit in a day.

The Mediterranean diet stresses fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats at every meal, making it very high in fiber, Mokari said. A lunch for this plan might be a vegetable soup with cannellini beans and whole-grain toast with hummus, tomato and feta cheese.

MyPlate also recommends a lot of fruits and vegetables: about 2 to 4 cups of vegetables and 1½ to 2 cups of fruit a day for adults. That averages out to two to four servings of vegetables and 1½ to two of fruit, Mokari said.

What you don’t see in these plates is very much added sugar or processed foods. There’s nothing new about guidance to cut back: All the meal plans call for reducing both.

“There’s not going to be a single dietitian that’s not going to tell you to eat more whole foods. I think that’s a great guidance,” Mokari said.

The new food pyramid is more aggressive about sugar and processed foods than previous guidance, however, recommending no added sugar for kids ages 5 to 10. Unless you are very careful and have a big budget, that might be hard, since added sugar is in lots of packaged foods, including many spaghetti sauces, peanut butters and snack foods.

“It’s just not realistic,” Mokari said. “I think it’s great to reduce [added sugars], but I think saying none is really not sustainable.”

What parents need to know about Trump Accounts: An FAQ

Kraig Pakulski 0 16 Article rating: No rating

By Jeanne Sahadi, CNN

(CNN) — There has been a lot of attention paid to the new Trump Accounts – especially the promised $1,000 federal government contributions for eligible newborns and the public declarations by companies and philanthropists that they will be making contributions, too.

But the fine print on exactly how the accounts will work is still emerging and there is a lot of information and press releases to sort through from the Treasury, the IRS, the White House and the official site trumpaccounts.gov.

So … we’ve tried to create a one-stop shop with the most immediately salient points for parents interested in creating an account for their child.

Here is what we know so far (and where we will make updates as Treasury and the IRS provide more details and clarity).

What is a Trump Account?

Trump Accounts are IRA-style savings accounts for eligible children. They are like traditional IRAs in that money in the accounts will grow tax deferred. But the rules for Trump Accounts differ when it comes to contributions, withdrawals and approved uses of the money. Also, the money may not be tapped before a child turns 18.

Which children are eligible to have one?

A child must be under age 18 at the end of the year in which an account is opened for them, per the IRS.

The child also must be a U.S. citizen and have a valid Social Security number.

A child is only allowed to have one Trump account opened for them. And it must be opened by an “authorized individual” – which is generally a legal guardian or parent. (The IRS breaks out more details on that here.)

Who qualifies for the $1,000 contribution?

Any child eligible to have a Trump Account and who is born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028 may receive a one-time, $1,000 pilot contribution from the federal government. But only if an authorized individual has opened an account for them and may claim them as a dependent on their tax return, according to enrolled agent David Mellem of Ashwaubenon Tax Professionals.

How can parents open an account?

Parents must elect to open an account for their child by filling out and submitting Form 4547. This is the same form on which you will elect to get the $1,000 pilot contribution for your eligible babies.

At the moment, the best way to do that is to submit the form electronically with your 2025 federal income tax return. But, starting this summer, according to trumpaccounts.gov, there will be an online portal for all parents to establish an account.

Based on the information requested on Form 4547 it appears parents are required to have a Social Security number. But IRS instructions for the form say that if the parent is “a nonresident or resident alien and you don’t have and aren’t eligible to get an SSN, enter your IRS individual taxpayer identification number.”)

When will the accounts be opened?

Once a parent submits Form 4547, starting in May 2026 “the Treasury Department or its agent will send information to the individual who made the election to activate the account through an authentication process and complete the opening of the initial Trump Account,” the IRS said in preliminary guidance.

How soon will the government deposit the $1,000?

Per the IRS, “no pilot program contribution will be deposited in the Trump Account of a child earlier than July 4, 2026.”

But more generally, it said, Treasury “will make the pilot program contribution as soon as practicable after the election is made and the Treasury Department can confirm with the initial Tru
