SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – The Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office announced charges filed against Mitchell Grote, 30, after he shot a police officer with a pellet gun.

Grote received the following charges after a May 8 incident:

• aggravated mayhem
• assault upon a peace officer
• battery on a peace officer causing injury
• resisting an executive officer through force
• resisting, obstructing or delaying peace officers during course of duty

Grote also received special allegations for personal use of a dangerous or deadly weapon and personal infliction of great bodily injury, according to the SBCDAO.

Grote is alleged to have been on probation at the time of the incident, which stems from a stabbing near Santa Barbara City Hall on January 29, 2023.

Grote pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied the special allegations. His next court appearance is set for May 26 and his bail is set at $1,000,000 for the shooting and no bail on his felony probation.

CARPINTERIA, Calif. (KEYT) - Charlotte Cooney is a standout for both Carpinteria High School girls tennis and girls basketball but her passion has always been playing baseball.

"I like playing the other sports but there is nothing like baseball," smiled Cooney who is the only current girl playing high school baseball in the Santa Barbara area.

Adding even more pressure on Charlotte is her dad Pat Cooney is the head coach of the Warriors.

"She can't afford to make a mistake because than the stereotype comes out oh the girl makes the mistake or the girl is weaker than the boy," stated head coach Cooney. "She really has to be on her game."

Charlotte Cooney has plenty of game. She is not only a 3-year varsity player but she starts for the Warriors, usually at second base where she is solid defensively.

Cooney is also one of the Warriors regular relief pitchers and yes she strikes out the boys, often.

"That's one of my favorite things when they come up to bat because I am the catcher," began fellow Warriors senior Micah Smith. "She is pitching they will be chirping 'I am going to hit a tank' and then they strike out or pop out so that's fun."

Charlotte has never hit a home run but she collects plenty of singles and has a solid on-base percentage.

"Boy or girl she earned her spot," said Smith.

Family and friends are a big reason why playing baseball has been so much fun for Charlotte at Carpinteria High School.

Her grandfather Mike Cooney is an assistant coach while her other grandfather, Carp Warriors Hall of Fame member Lou Panizzon operates the scoreboard. Chartlotte's mom runs the snack shack and her younger sister Caroline is the public address announcer.

It may be a family affair but she does not get any special treatment on the field.

"We don't play any favorites here, it's strictly a coach-player relationship," said Pat Cooney.

"I think it would be different if I wasn't playing here. I am surrounded by good people," said Charlotte who will attend Cal Poly in the fall.

She may or may not play baseball for a club team in college but for now she is soaking up the final innings of her high school baseball career.

Carpinteria qualified for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs and they have a first round game on Friday at Flintridge Prep of La Canada in Division 7.

El Festival Internacional de Cine de Cannes inició este martes 12 de mayo su edición número 79 y se extenderá hasta el próximo 23 de mayo. Este año, la presencia hispana en el prestigioso evento que reconoce lo mejor del cine de autor a nivel mundial es particularmente diversa, con representación de España y Latinoamérica tanto en competencia como en los jurados.

Prueba de ello es Pedro Almodóvar, el afamado cineasta español que compite por la Palma de Oro —el máximo galardón del festival— con la cinta “Amarga Navidad”. Almodóvar se enfrenta a su compatriota Rodrigo Sorogoyen, quien también está en la contienda con “El ser querido”, así como a Javier Ambrossi y Javier Calvo, mejor conocidos como “Los Javis”, también españoles, que participan con el filme “La bola negra”.

Dentro del jurado que evaluará esta selección de obras se encuentra el director y guionista chileno Diego Céspedes. El joven realizador es recordado por su trabajo en “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo”, película que le valió el premio Un Certain Regard en la edición 2025 del Festival de Cannes. Por su parte, la cineasta española Carla Simón preside el jurado encargado de evaluar los cortometrajes y la selección La Cinef.

En la sección Un Certain Regard también destaca la presencia latinoamericana. La chilena Manuela Martelli compite con la película “El deshielo”, mientras que la costarricense Valentina Maurel participa con su obra “Siempre soy tu animal materno”.

En el apartado de Proyecciones Especiales sobresale el mexicano Diego Luna, quien presenta “Ceniza en la boca”, una historia que explora la vida de una mujer que emigra de México en busca de un mejor futuro en Madrid.

Por otro lado, la icónica película de Guillermo del Toro, “El laberinto del fauno”, fue seleccionada dentro de Cannes Classics y será exhibida en una versión restaurada con motivo de su 20 aniversario. Asimismo, “La casa del ángel”, del argentino Leopoldo Torre Nilsson, también forma parte de la selección de clásicos de este año.

Además, varias producciones de origen hispano tendrán su estreno durante el evento francés. Tal es el caso de “The End of It”, de la española María Martínez Bayona, así como “The Match”, una producción sobre el histórico partido entre Argentina e Inglaterra en el Mundial de 1986 disputado en México, dirigida por los argentinos Juan Cabral y Santiago Franco.

Algunos cortometrajes en competencia también fueron creados por realizadores hispanos. Entre ellos destaca “Para los contrincantes”, dirigido por el argentino Federico Luis, que narra la historia de un niño mexicano que busca convertirse en campeón de boxeo. El colombiano Theo Montoya también participa en esta categoría con “Pelotón Trueno”, una propuesta centrada en el ascenso del comandante Montoya dentro de la lucha contra las FARC.

A su vez, la producción española de 1976 “Cría cuervos”, de Carlos Saura, es una de las películas seleccionadas para exhibirse en la sección Cinéma de la Plage, cuyas funciones se realizarán este año en la playa Macé, rebautizada temporalmente como playa Brigitte Bardot.

David Venturella, un veterano funcionario de inmigración, sería el próximo director interino de ICE, según un portavoz del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés).

El exejecutivo de una empresa privada de prisiones asumirá el liderazgo de la agencia mientras la administración de Trump intenta adoptar un enfoque diferente en su ofensiva contra la inmigración tras un año turbulento. El secretario de Seguridad Nacional, Markwayne Mullin, ha dicho que quiere que los agentes adopten un enfoque “discreto” mientras se mantienen agresivos en los arrestos.

Venturella asumirá el cargo en lugar del director interino de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas, Todd Lyons, cuyo último día en funciones está previsto para el 31 de mayo. La agencia ha estado sin un líder confirmado por el Senado desde la administración Obama.

Lyons, un veterano de la agencia federal a quien se le encargó supervisar el plan de deportación masiva de la administración Trump, enfrentó un intenso escrutinio a medida que la agencia incrementaba los arrestos el año pasado y tras los tiroteos de dos ciudadanos estadounidenses por agentes federales en enero.

UC SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—With final projects and exams looming, UC Santa Barbara students are turning to artificial intelligence to succeed. 

It has sparked a debate about how far the technology should go in the classroom.

Google recently hosted an AI study pop-up on campus, introducing students to tools powered by Google’s Gemini platform. Representatives demonstrated how students can upload PDFs, class notes, and even whiteboard photos into one AI-powered workspace designed to help organize information and simplify studying.

“We want to show up as a helpful guide for students, not as a replacement for learning,” said Google Product Marketing Manager Tammy Tran.

The tools can also walk students through math and science problems step-by-step or generate audio summaries students can listen to between classes.

Some students welcomed the technology as a way to improve efficiency and reduce stress.

“I think AI is good for everything,” said UCSB first-year student Sam Rison. “I don't think you should put a limit on what you can use it for.”

Others expressed caution, pointing to concerns about accuracy and overreliance on AI-generated answers.

“I’ve definitely used it for economics work or math work, and it gave me a completely wrong answer,” said UCSB student Paul Murphy.

The rapid rise of AI in education has also fueled controversy nationwide, with universities updating academic integrity policies and requiring students to disclose when AI tools are used in assignments.

“If you're just using it to do your homework and you're not actually thinking about it, then you probably shouldn't use it for that,” said UCSB computer science student Finn Bresnahan. “You're here to learn critical thinking.”

Whether viewed as a powerful study aid or a growing academic concern, AI is continuing to reshape how students learn — and how schools define academic success.
