(CNN) — Family and friends of Virginia Giuffre, one of the best known accusers of Jeffrey Epstein, gathered on the National Mall in Washington on Saturday to celebrate her life and legacy on the one-year anniversary of her death and in the wake of the Justice Department’s release of millions of documents related to Epstein.

Giuffre, who died by suicide last April at her home near Perth, Australia, publicly alleged in 2019 that Epstein trafficked her and forced her to have sex with his friends, including former Prince Andrew, when she was as young as 17 years old.

Many attendees, including several survivors of Epstein’s abuse, donned butterfly pins, in honor of Giuffre.

“We wear your butterfly pins, knowing it’s a piece of you with us, providing us with the strength to keep moving forward, the true metamorphosis of transitioning from victim to survivor,” said Giuffre’s brother, Sky Roberts, as his voice cracked with emotion. “You’re my hero and you’re a hero to the world.”

Epstein survivor Laura Blume McGee said Giuffre “paid the ultimate price.”

“As a survivor, Virginia’s bravery changed my life,” McGee said. “Her courage gave me permission to be visible and to demand accountability and to reclaim my voice. Because of her, I believe justice is possible and our voice can spark real lasting change.”

Giuffre’s memoir, “Nobody’s Girl,” was published six months after her death, and contains harrowing details of the abuse she said she suffered as a teenager. It also recounts her years attempting to get justice for herself and fellow victims.

“In my years with them, they lent me out to scores of wealthy, powerful people. I was habitually used and humiliated – and in some instances, choked, beaten, and bloodied,” Giuffre wrote of Epstein and his circle. “I believed that I might die a sex slave.”

A renewed push for transparency gained momentum last year after months of advocacy from survivors and lawmakers on Capitol Hill. The Epstein Files Transparency Act, which passed last November with bipartisan support in Congress and was signed by President Donald Trump after months of resistance on the issue. It forced the Justice Department to release nearly 3 million pages of files related to the investigation into Epstein.

The release of the Epstein files, however, was met with criticism after attorneys for Epstein victims said the DOJ failed to redact identifying information in “thousands” of places and withheld the details of people who may have aided the convicted sex offender. Earlier this week, the Justice Department’s internal watchdog announced it is launching a review into the DOJ’s production of files and documents relating to the Epstein files, as survivors and members of Congress have accused the agency of botching the files’ release.

Giuffre’s publicist, Dini von Mueffling, reflected at the vigil Saturday on the strides made toward accountability and justice for Epstein survivors since Giuffre’s passing.

“Little did either of us know at the time we began our journey, what we would be able to accomplish, particularly in this last year since her passing,” von Mueffling said. “What a year. The milestones of it are too numerous to mention.”

Gaza celebró este sábado sus primeras elecciones en más de 20 años, pero solo en una ciudad, para una pequeña fracción de la población del devastado territorio, en medio del estancamiento del proceso para avanzar el alto el fuego negociado por Estados Unidos entre Israel y Hamas.

Las elecciones tuvieron lugar en la ciudad de Deir al-Balah, en el centro de Gaza, una de las zonas que sufrió la menor destrucción durante casi dos años de bombardeos israelíes sobre el enclave. Se espera que los resultados se publiquen la noche de este sábado o el domingo.

(CNN) — At least 14 people were killed and at least 38 wounded, including five children, after a bomb tore apart a busy road in southwestern Colombia, according to local authorities.

The incident was part of a “wave” of terror attacks this weekend, Colombian officials also said, as deadly violence resurges in the country.

“An explosive device was detonated on the Pan-American Highway, in the El Túnel sector of Cajibío, in an indiscriminate attack against the civilian population,” said Cauca Governor Octavio Guzmán in a post on X.

Guzmán later added in an update that Colombia’s Minister of Defense Pedro Sánchez was at the scene of the explosion to help “coordinate rescue efforts.” Authorities are “initiating a national-level security council to address this serious situation,” the governor said.

Videos published on social media showed the aftermath of the explosion, with a deep crater blown in the center of the road. Mangled cars, trucks, and buses covered in dust and debris lay around the site of the explosion, along with the bodies of its victims.

“We are facing a terrorist escalation that demands immediate responses,” Guzmán said, issuing an “urgent” call to national authorities to guarantee security.

Authorities also received reports of violent incidents elsewhere, including in El Túnel, El Tambo, Caloto, Popayán, Guachené, Mercaderes, and Miranda, in what General Commander of Military Forces of Colombia Hugo Alejandro López Barreto described as “a wave of attacks.”

Colombia blames FARC dissidents

Colombia’s Armed Forces have blamed the highway bombing on dissident factions of a defunct leftist militant group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), led by Néstor Gregorio Vera Fernández, a militant leader better known by his nom de guerre “Iván Mordisco.”

FARC laid down its arms in 2016 and eventually disbanded after a peace agreement ended over 50 years of war with the Colombian government – a conflict that killed over 220,000 and displaced some 5 million Colombians.

However, some members of the militant group refused to engage in the peace process from the start. These dissident fighters – which include splinter groups who fight among themselves – have continued a low-level insurgency in some rural parts of Colombia.

López Barreto said at a press conference that “a wave of attacks” took place in the Cauca and Valle del Cauca departments on Saturday, blaming the “criminal structures” of FARC dissidents led by “Iván Mordisco.”

“Over these two days in the departments of Cauca and Valle del Cauca, 26 terrorist actions have occurred that have affected our civilian population,” López stated, adding that this series of attacks is a response to the “sustained pressure” the Colombian government has exerted on these groups’ criminal operations.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for “the maximum worldwide pursuit against this narco-terrorist group,” which he also linked to “Iván Mordisco.”

“Those who attacked and killed seven civilians and wounded 17 more in Cajibío — many of them indigenous — are terrorists, fascists, and drug traffickers,” Petro wrote on X.

Un agente de policía de Chicago murió por disparos y otro resultó gravemente herido este sábado por un sospechoso de robo al que escoltaban dentro de un hospital, informó el superintendente de la policía de Chicago, Larry Snelling.

No está claro cómo el sospechoso —quien, según el hospital, fue sometido a un control con detector de metales al entrar y estuvo escoltado por agentes del orden en todo momento dentro de las instalaciones— logró hacerse con un arma de fuego. El superintendente declaró: “El asunto sigue bajo investigación”.

Plenty of cloud cover, breezy winds and some sprinkles kept the last Sunday of April feeling more like late Winter than mid Spring. Look for more scattered sprinkles through the overnight with maybe even a few areas seeing measurable rainfall. Winds will stay breezy and even gusty from the northwest with no watches at this time. Sunday looks to stay on the cool and cloudy side with high temperatures staying mostly in the 60's.  We should see a bit better clearing as the weak storm system currently moving across the coast pushes farther to the east. Again, if any rain does occur through tonight and in to early tomorrow, totals should stay near or below on to two tenths of an inch.

Looking ahead, further clearing with a return of sunshine is expected for Monday and Tuesday with temperatures warming back in to the 70's for most of the region. Another weak storm front will toy with the region by very late Tuesday and early Wednesday. We could see another shower chance, but nothing is showing up on forecast models that looks significant at this time. We will monitor closely and update the forecast early in the work week if things change and more rain threatens the region. Beyond mid week, things look seasonal and nice with partly cloudy skies at times and mild seasonal temperatures. Our long range forecast models does hint at increasing clouds and cooler temperatures for next weekend, but keeps things dry at this time.
