La razón por la que Sean Penn no fue a los premios Oscar: estaba reunido con el presidente Zelensky en Ucrania

Muchos se preguntaron cuál era el motivo de la ausencia de Sean Penn el domingo en la gala de los premios Oscar 2026, en la que obtuvo la estatuilla a mejor actor secundario.

El actor Kieran Culkin, quien presentó la categoría, dijo: “Sean Penn no pudo estar aquí esta noche; o no quiso, así que aceptaré el premio en su nombre”.

La razón solo pudo conocerse el lunes: Penn se encontraba el día de la ceremonia de los premios Oscar en Kyiv, Ucrania, en un encuentro con el presidente del país, Volodymyr Zelensky, según publicó el propio mandatario en su cuenta oficial en X.

“Sean, gracias a ti, sabemos lo que es un verdadero amigo de Ucrania. Has estado al lado de Ucrania desde el primer día de la guerra a gran escala. Y eso sigue siendo cierto hoy. Y sabemos que seguirás apoyando a nuestro país y a nuestro pueblo”, escribió Zelensky en la red social.

Las agencias de noticias también difundieron imágenes de Penn caminando el lunes por Kyiv. La presencia del actor fue intermitente en la campaña 2026 de los premios Oscar, pues no asistió tampoco a la ceremonia de los premios BAFTA en Londres, el pasado febrero; pero sí asistió a la gala de los premios Globo de Oro, en enero.

Conocido por su activismo político, Sean Penn codirigó con Aaron Kaufman el documental “Superpower” (2023), sobre la invasión de Ucrania por Rusia. En 2022, el actor visitó Kyiv y le entregó al mandatario ucraniano una de los entonces dos premios Oscar que había ganado. Zelensky agradeció el gesto y dijo que la estatuilla permanecerá en el país hasta el fin de la invasión rusa de Ucrania.

El actor criticó en 2023 a la Academia de Ciencias y Artes Cinmatográficas, que concede los premios Oscar, por impedirle denunciar la invasión rusa de Ucrania en la gala.

Penn ha recibido seis nominaciones al premio Oscar y lo ha ganado en tres ocasiones como: en 2004, por “Mystic River” y, en 2009, por “Milk, ambas en la categoría de actor principal; y ahora, en 2026, por “One Battle After Another” como actor de reparto.
