Paris (CNN) — It was the photo of a loved one nobody wants to receive.

When the partner of a 35-year-old magistrate in France checked his phone last week, he saw a picture of his partner accompanied by a stark warning: pay a ransom in cryptocurrency or we will mutilate her.

The man – an associate in a start-up that has cryptocurrency activities – reported the demand to French police on Thursday morning, sparking a multi-agency manhunt involving as many as 160 officers, local authorities said.

The magistrate and her elderly mother were held for 30 hours in a garage in southern France’s Drôme region before escaping, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.

The case renews focus on the recent rise in crypto-linked kidnappings in France and elsewhere, often involving high-profile individuals and those linked to them. Searches are ongoing in the United States after the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie. Purported ransom notes have demanded millions in bitcoin for her return, CNN has reported.

In France, the mother and daughter duo managed to escape from the garage in the municipality of Bourg-lès-Valence without a ransom being paid, assisted by a neighbor, Lyon prosecutor Thierry Dran said Friday in a press conference.

“They were able to take advantage of the absence of their captor to free themselves, to call for help, in particular by banging forcefully on the garage door,” Dran said. “Alerted by the noise, a neighbor then intervened. He was able to open the door and thus allow our two victims to escape.”

The unnamed man who discovered the two women told local media they were grateful for his intervention.

“I just came to take my car when I heard women hitting and screaming. I opened the door and two women came out; they were a little dirty. I was happy, they said thank you,” he told BFMTV.

The women were immediately transported to hospital, Dran said.

On Sunday, six people were arrested in relation to the kidnapping, including a minor, according to BFMTV. The main suspects are in their twenties and were arrested in the cities of Lyon and Chambéry, the outlet said.

Crypto highly traceable, experts say

The latest kidnapping follows similar incidents in France linked to the world of cryptocurrency – either due to the individuals involved or the currency of the ransom.

Some believe bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are untraceable – and therefore useful in ransom demands – but experts say this is a misconception. “Crypto works on a blockchain, and the blockchain is a public registry where everything is visible, everything is trackable and everything is auditable,” Renaud Lifchitz, a French IT senior security consultant, told CNN last year.

Last week, Juan Andrés Guerrero-Saade, vice president for intelligence and security research at SentinelOne, told CNN that bitcoin is one of the “most traceable currencies we’ve ever had.”

In December 2024, the wife of crypto investor and influencer Stéphane Winkel was kidnapped from the couple’s home in Belgium. She was rescued after her kidnapper crashed his car in a dramatic police chase.

(CNN) — McDonald’s is offering a few customers a special Valentine’s meal this year – Chicken McNuggets and caviar.

Starting at 11 am ET on Tuesday, McDonald’s is giving away a limited number of kits including caviar and a gift card for McNuggets at mcnuggetcaviar.com/countdown.

The giveaway underscores the lengths restaurants and retailers are going to grab customers’ attention, hoping the dollars will follow, as consumers remain gloomy about the economy and keep a tighter hold on their paychecks.

McDonald’s said in a statement each kit has all you need for “an upscale yet effortless celebration” including a 1oz tin of “McNugget Caviar,” crème fraîche and a Mother of Pearl caviar spoon, along with a $25 gift card.

Targeted campaigns can help boost brand awareness, and sales. A McDonald’s tie-in last year with “A Minecraft Movie” helped turn around sales after two quarters of sinking numbers. (The movie was released by CNN’s sister company Warner Bros. Pictures.)

And with consumer sentiment at its lowest in well over a decade, businesses have been looking for ways to get customers in the door. In that sense, a free giveaway might not generate immediate revenue, but it can build notice and serve as potentially viral marketing.

While McDonald’s clearly made its name selling burgers, its chicken sales are now on par with beef sales at its restaurants, CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors in 2024.

McDonald’s told Food & Wine magazine that the caviar offer was due to customer choice. For years, fans on social media have lauded the “high lowbrow” pairing. Popstar Rihanna even gave it a taste during a TikTok video in 2024

“They’ve been pairing Chicken McNuggets with caviar long before we made it official,” the chain told the gourmet magazine.

McDonald’s reports quarterly earnings on Wednesday. For the first nine months of the year, sales globally were up 1%, excluding the impact of currency exchange rates. Sales at US stores open at least a year were up 2.4% in the third quarter.

El Gobierno de Cuba, asediado por la presión de Estados Unidos en materia energética, ha desplegado una serie de medidas para intentar cubrir servicios elementales en un plan de supervivencia que ya tiene paralelos con el “período especial” de la década de los 90 tras la caída del bloque soviético.

El presidente Miguel Díaz-Canel reconoció la semana pasada en una conferencia de prensa que Cuba sufre un “desabastecimiento agudo de combustible” ante las presiones de EE.UU., luego de que el mandatario Donald Trump firmara un decreto que amenaza con aranceles a los países que suministren petróleo a la isla.

La Habana, que denuncia un “bloqueo criminal” de Washington, también confirmó que no ha recibido crudo desde diciembre, en particular desde Venezuela, que cubría casi un tercio de las necesidades energéticas de la isla y no envió buques desde el ataque estadounidense del sábado 3 de enero en Caracas, en el que el presidente venezolano, Nicolás Maduro, fue capturado y trasladado a Nueva York.

“Vamos a vivir tiempos difíciles. Estos, en particular, son muy difíciles”, reconoció Díaz-Canel. El mandatario aseguró en esa conferencia que las medidas van a “afectar la transportación de alimentos, la producción de alimentos, el transporte público, el funcionamiento de los hospitales, de instituciones de todo tipo, de las escuelas, la producción de la economía, el turismo”, entre otros sectores.

También, adelantó que el Gobierno contempla disposiciones del concepto “opción cero”, plan de hace tres décadas que implicó un racionamiento extremo, autosuficiencia alimentaria, el uso de tracción animal, carbón vegetal para cocinar y transporte no motorizado, entre otras órdenes, aunque matizó que sería “actualizadas porque hay situaciones diferentes en estas directivas”.

El viernes, el viceprimer ministro Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga confirmó que la isla racionará la venta de combustible, aunque no dio detalles ni plazos al respecto, en una decisión adoptada en un Consejo de Ministros extraordinario para abordar la crisis.

El funcionario explicó que Cuba priorizará el poco combustible con el que cuenta el país para “los servicios esenciales”, la generación de electricidad, los “servicios de salud”, el abastecimiento de agua, las actividades de defensa y para “garantizar la sostenibilidad de aquellos sectores que generen ingresos en divisas”, como el turismo.

Además, indicó que facilitará los trámites para que las empresas privadas “que tengan la posibilidad” importen su propio combustible.

El viceprimer ministro también señaló que las “actividades administrativas fundamentales” solo operarán de lunes a jueves con el fin de ahorrar energía.

Por su parte, el Ministerio del Trabajo pidió a las empresas estatales que faciliten el teletrabajo y la reubicación de los trabajadores. El titular de la cartera, Jesús Otamendiz, anunció que los centros de trabajo públicos deberán ajustar sus horarios en concordancia con la situación energética de la zona en la que se encuentren.

Además, explicó que, en caso de que el trabajador no pueda teletrabajar ni reubicarse, se le aplicará una “interrupción laboral” hasta que solucione su situación manteniendo su salario durante un mes.

En La Habana, las autoridades de transporte público admitieron en redes sociales que se limitaba, aún más, la circulación de buses, aunque sin especificar qué rutas o frecuencias.

A su vez, la dirección de Ómnibus Nacionales en la provincia de Las Tunas suspendió desde el viernes todas sus rutas principales —menos la de La Habana— debido a “la compleja situación con la disponibilidad de combustibles en el país”.

En medio de una ventisca que azotó el centro de Ucrania el mes pasado, Iryna Vlasenko se encontraba ante un dilema.

Necesitaba llevar a su hija de 7 años, que estaba gravemente enferma, a un hospital infantil en Kyiv. Pero no podía llegar a la estación principal de tren de Jmelnitski, a más de 300 kilómetros de la capital.

Así que, desesperada, envió un mensaje de texto a la empresa ferroviaria ucraniana. ¿Podría el tren parar en su pueblo, Korzivtsi?

Poco después, recibió una respuesta: “¡Hola! Pararemos el tren en Korzivtsi”.

Vlasenko logró que su hija subiera al tren a la mañana siguiente.

Su historia es una de las muchas que muestran cómo la compañía ferroviaria estatal de Ucrania, Ukrzaliznytsia, se ha convertido en un recurso vital para los ucranianos en tiempos de guerra: para los soldados que regresan de permiso, para el transporte de suministros, para la prestación de servicios médicos móviles y para conectar el mundo exterior con Kyiv y otras ciudades.

La línea ferroviaria entre Kyiv y la frontera polaca también ha transportado a decenas de líderes extranjeros a la capital ucraniana durante la guerra, generalmente de noche, y ha sacado de Ucrania al presidente, Volodymyr Zelensky, y a sus ministros, quienes han presionado para obtener apoyo internacional. Todavía no hay vuelos comerciales dentro ni fuera de Ucrania.

En los últimos meses, Rusia ha intensificado los ataques con drones contra centros e infraestructuras ferroviarias, e incluso contra los propios trenes.

A finales de enero, cinco personas murieron cuando drones impactaron un tren de pasajeros en la región de Járkov, incendiando tres vagones. Un video del lugar de los hechos muestra a un soldado ayudando a rescatar a una mujer y a su bebé. La mujer llevaba al niño a ver a su padre. La ruta transporta a militares que regresan de permiso, pero también a numerosos civiles. Los ataques rusos contra la extensa red ferroviaria de Ucrania se deben en parte a su importancia económica, pero también a un golpe psicológico. (CNN) — Grammy Award-winning singer Chappell Roan said Monday she’d left the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman after emails released by the US Justice Department showed he exchanged flirtatious messages with Ghislaine Maxwell more than 20 years ago.

The emails were released last month as part of the department’s dump of millions of documents relating to its investigation into Maxwell’s partner, the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Wasserman, a major power player in the entertainment industry, is the founder and CEO of Wasserman talent agency and is also head of the coordinating committee for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He is facing calls to step down from his roles following the emails’ release.

On Monday, Roan posted to her Instagram Stories: “As of today, I am no longer represented by Wasserman, the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman.”

The 27-year-old singer did not mention Wasserman’s messages in her statement but added that “no artist, agent or employee should ever be expected to defend or overlook actions that conflict so deeply with our own moral values.”

“Artists deserve representation that aligns with their values and supports their safety and dignity,” Roan added. “This decision reflects my belief that meaningful change in our industry requires accountability and leadership that earns trust.”

Wasserman has not been accused of criminal wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. CNN has contacted his agency and a crisis communication firm representing him for comment.

Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking and other crimes in 2021 and is serving a 20-year sentence. Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.

The slow trickle of revelations that have emerged from this latest batch of documents have laid bare the close ties dozens of key political, business and even royal figures seemed to have with Epstein.

While some aspects of Wasserman’s association with Epstein were already known, this fresh batch of emails shows a deeper and far more intimate relationship with Maxwell than had previously been revealed.

During one exchange in March 2003, Wasserman asks Maxwell: “So what do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?”

In another email, dated April 1, 2003, Wasserman, who was married at the time, says to Maxwell: “Where are you, I miss you,” before asking to book a massage.

In a statement to other news outlets last week, Wasserman apologized for his communications with Maxwell, which took place years before she was convicted of a crime, while adding he “never had” a personal or business relationship with Epstein.
