Bonobos are capable of pretend play, just like human children

(CNN) — Children love to play pretend, holding imaginary tea parties, educating classrooms of teddies or running their own grocery stores. Now, a new study suggests that such make-believe play is not a uniquely human talent, but a skill that great apes also possess.

The evidence for this comes from a bonobo named Kanzi, who took part in three pretend tea party-style experiments conducted by two researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Previous observations of individual apes playing alone had raised the possibility that animals could engage in simulated play, study authors Amalia Bastos and Christopher Krupenye noted in the study, which was published Thursday in the journal Science.

In the earlier research, a young, captive chimpanzee was seen on two occasions between 2003 and 2004 dragging what seemed to be imaginary blocks along the floor, in a similar way to when he played with real wooden blocks.

Female chimpanzees, observed in the wild in Uganda over a 14-year period, had also been seen carrying and playing with sticks as if they were dolls, just as mother chimpanzees carry infants.

However, the anecdotal nature of the evidence had left room for doubt, the researchers said.

For example, the animals could have been imitating behavior they had observed in humans, rather than using their imagination. Or, perhaps, an ape that “picks” a blueberry from a photograph might actually think the blueberries are real. Or, if playing with wooden blocks is highly rewarding, an ape might continue to repeat the same action even if the blocks are not there.

To address such concerns and provide more robust evidence, in 2024 the researchers carried out controlled tests using juice and grapes when Kanzi was 43, a year before his death.

‘Where’s the juice?’

First, Kanzi was presented with two squirt bottles, one that was empty and one that contained juice, and asked to pick which bottle had the juice. During 18 trials, he chose the correct bottle every time.

Then, an experimenter presented the bonobo with two empty, transparent cups and pretended to pour juice from an empty pitcher into each cup. They then poured the imaginary juice out of one of the cups and back into the pitcher.

When asked, “Where’s the juice?” Kanzi correctly chose the cup that still contained the imaginary juice 68% of the time, which is higher than if he were picking at random.

However, in case Kanzi thought there was real juice in the empty cups, the researchers carried out a second task to see if he could distinguish real juice from imaginary juice. In 18 trials, Kanzi was presented with one cup containing juice and another empty cup filled with imaginary juice, and asked, “Which one do you want?”

Kanzi correctly chose the cup with juice 14 out of the 18 times, showing that he did know

So-called ‘manfluencers’ are filming themselves trying to pick up women. Smart glasses are their perfect tool

One woman told CNN she believed she was having a genuine interaction with a stranger.

(CNN) — Toluwa was waiting for her flight in an airport lounge in Washington, DC, when she said she was approached by a stranger.

The pair got chatting and, after a while, she agreed to exchange numbers with him. It wasn’t until she got home and searched his social media that she discovered he had posted numerous videos of himself trying to pick up women in airports.

These videos were taken using a built-in camera on his glasses – smart glasses, which look like regular eyewear and, while still relatively niche, are growing in popularity.

“I creeped, I found his TikTok. I found out that he does these ‘rizz’ videos,” Toluwa said, using a popular slang term derived from “charisma” for social media videos showing men approaching women in public and chatting them up. Toluwa wished to be identified by her first name only for privacy reasons.

While in contact over text, Toluwa said the man sent her the footage he had filmed of her without her knowledge, saying he wanted to “run it past” her before he shared it online.

She said he tried to persuade her to consent to him doing so; however, despite her not explicitly agreeing to, he uploaded it on social media. “It blows up and to the point where people are sending me this video, someone came up to me in Union Market, which is a large space in DC, and shoved it in my face and was like, is this you?”

Social media is awash with videos of men filming themselves approaching women in public spaces and attempting to flirt with them or ask for their numbers. In many cases, the videos are filmed and uploaded to platforms like TikTok and Instagram without the permission or knowledge of the person being filmed.

These videos, often filmed from the point of view of the man approaching a potential subject, rack up thousands and, in some case, millions of views. Once posted, they can attract misogynistic comments.

While the concept of the pick-up artist is nothing new, experts are sounding the alarm over the rise of so-called “manfluencers” who are covertly filming women to create misogynistic content online.

‘Controlling women’s images’

The term “manfluencer” describes a broad group of social media figures who create content geared toward men. While some post harmless content such as gym routines and self-improvement advice, other accounts are more sinister.

In this online sphere, women are often positioned “as a conquest, prize or reward,” Stephanie Wescott, a feminist academic, writer and speaker, and a lecturer in Education, Culture and Society at Australia’s Monash University, told CNN.

Smart glasses can play into the hands of these content creators as they offer a clear message about power, she warned. Namely, that men canbe watching, recording and therefore controlling women’s images in public spaces without their knowledge and therefore, that the public spaces belong to men.”

For Wescott, the phenomenon represents another example of the gendered abuse of technology – and a danger for women that is difficult to anticipate. “The danger is the loss of bodily autonomy without even being aware that it is happening,” s

(CNN) — President Donald Trump – who skipped the Super Bowl and instead attended a watch party in Florida – denounced Bad Bunny’s halftime performance as “a slap in the face” and said “nobody understands a word” the Puerto Rican rapper was saying.

“The Super Bowl Halftime Show is absolutely terrible, one of the worst, EVER! It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “This ‘Show’ is just a ‘slap in the face’ to our Country, which is setting new standards and records every single day.”

Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, rocked the stage Sunday night with many of his biggest hits, powerful imagery and theatrical nods to songs and symbols from throughout his Spanish-language catalog. Several huge stars, including Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, made appearances.

During the performance, Bad Bunny delivered a unifying message, expanding the meaning of “God bless America” to include all nations of the Americas – from Chile to Canada.

“God bless America, whether it’s Chile, Argentina,” Bad Bunny said as he proceeded to list more than 20 nations in North and South America, and displayed the flags of many of them. He stood beside the US flag and the flag of Puerto Rico, a US territory.

He also displayed a message written on a football that read: “Together we are America.”

The president criticized both the language and choreography of the performance. “Nobody understands a word this guy is saying,” Trump wrote in his Truth Social, adding that the dancing was “disgusting,” particularly for young children watching across the US and around the world.

Yet the US has one of the highest numbers of Spanish speakers of any nation in the world. About 41.8 million people in the country speak Spanish at home – roughly 13.5% of the population – according to Census Bureau data from 2019. Some studies estimate the number of US Spanish speakers could be closer to 48.6 million, as of 2015, if non-Hispanic people and undocumented people are included, according to a report from Instituto Cervantes.
