PASO ROBLES, Calif. (KEYT) – The California Mid-State Fair is going retro this year, kicking off it's 80th anniversary this summer. The official 2026 fair theme is Back to the 80s!

Celebrating eight decades of agriculture, entertainment, creativity, and community on the Central Coast, the fair will feature 80s themed decor, promotions, and activities through the fairgrounds – creating an atmosphere the fair says will be inspired by the music, fashion, and pop culture that defined the era.

"Celebrating 80 years is a meaningful moment for the California Mid-State Fair, and Back to the 80s gives us a fun and engaging way to honor our past while looking ahead,” said Colleen Bojorquez, Chief Executive Officer. “This theme invites our community to get creative, have fun, and be part of a shared celebration that reflects the spirit of the Fair.”

Dos agentes dispararon sus armas durante el mortal encuentro con Alex Pretti en Minneapolis durante el fin de semana, de acuerdo con un informe inicial al Congreso del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) revisado por CNN.

El informe —de la investigación inicial de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP, por sus siglas en inglés) sobre la muerte de Pretti— señala que un agente gritó: “¡Tiene un arma!” varias veces antes de que dos agentes dispararan mientras forcejeaban con él en el suelo.

“El personal de CBP intentó detener a Pretti. Pretti se resistió a los esfuerzos del personal de CBP y se produjo un forcejeo”, dice el informe. “Durante el forcejeo, un agente de la Patrulla Fronteriza gritó ‘¡Tiene un arma!’ varias veces”.

El informe continúa: “Aproximadamente cinco segundos después, un agente de la Patrulla Fronteriza disparó su pistola Glock 19 asignada por CBP y un oficial de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza también disparó su pistola Glock 47 asignada por CBP contra Pretti”.

(CNN) — US President Donald Trump has warned Iraq over reinstatement of Nouri al-Maliki as prime minister, saying that the country “descended into poverty and total chaos” under his previous leadership.

“That should not be allowed to happen again” Trump wrote on social media Tuesday. “Because of his insane policies and ideologies, if elected, the United States of America will no longer help Iraq. If we are not there to help, Iraq has ZERO chance of success, prosperity, or freedom. MAKE IRAQ GREAT AGAIN!”

Al-Maliki, leader of the Islamic Dawa Party, previously served two consecutive terms as Iraq’s prime minister from 2006 to 2014.

CNN has reached out to al-Maliki’s office for comment.

He was nominated by the Shia Coordination Framework —which holds a parliamentary majority — to serve again as Iraq’s prime minister, citing his “political and administrative experience and role in managing the state.”

Iraq held nationwide elections in November for 329 seats in parliament. Shiite alliances won 187 seats. Shia Muslims make up the majority of Iraq’s population.

Iraq’s president, Abdul Latif Rashid, congratulated al-Maliki on his nomination in a statement on Sunday and expressed hope that his leadership would strengthen political stability, national partnership, and Iraq’s development, while meeting the aspirations of the Iraqi people for security and services.

Born in 1968, al-Maliki joined the Iran-backed Dawa Party and later fled Iraq in 1979-1980 after being sentenced to death for opposing Saddam Hussein’s Baathist regime. He returned to Iraq in 2003 following the U.S.-led invasion.

During al-Maliki’s administration, particularly in late 2013 and the first half of 2014, the Islamic State (ISIS) seized several major Iraqi cities and large swaths of territory. This prompted the government to form Shia-led paramilitary forces to counter the Sunni extremists. The United States has long opposed these armed groups and called for their disarmament.

In December, Trump’s special envoy to Iraq, Mark Savaya, warned Iraqi politicians to rein in non-state armed groups, cautioning that failure could push Iraq toward “fragmentation and decline” more than two decades after Saddam Hussein was toppled.

Savaya also warned that the decisions made by Iraqi leaders in the coming period “will determine whether Iraq advances toward sovereignty and strength or slips back into fragmentation and decline.”

Madrid, Spain (CNN) — Spain has announced it will grant legal status to 500,000 undocumented migrants, in a move that goes against a trend of anti-immigration rhetoric and policies in the United States and much of Europe.

The move, announced Tuesday, is aimed at reducing labor exploitation in Spain’s underground economy. The country’s central bank and the United Nations have previously said that Spain needs around 300,000 migrant workers a year to sustain its welfare state.

“Today is a historic day for our country,” Spain’s immigration minister Elma Saiz told a press conference. “We are strengthening a migration model based on human rights, integration, coexistence, and compatibility with economic growth and social cohesion.”

Saiz said the new measure was “necessary to respond to a reality that exists on our streets” and would benefit the country’s economy.

The presidency has said the measure will allow a “dignified” life for migrants.

Foreigners who arrived in the country before Dec. 31, 2025 and can prove they have been living in the country for at least five months will be granted legal residency of up to one year and work permits valid for any sector and throughout the country. They will need to prove they have no criminal record.

People will be able to apply from the beginning of April until June 30, 2026.

How many undocumented migrants are in Spain?

There are far more undocumented migrants in Spain than this new policy serves. Funcas, an analysis center linked to the banking association CECA, estimates there were 840,000 undocumented migrants in the country at the beginning of 2025.

Most – about 760,000 – are from Latin America, according to Funcas. Some 290,000 come from Colombia, nearly 110,000 from Peru and 90,000 from Honduras.

The number of undocumented migrants in Spain has grown eight-fold since 2017, according to Funcas.

Tuesday’s announcement builds upon a measure that took effect in May of last year, which aimed to simplify and expedite the legalization process. The Spanish government said that policy could allow 900,000 undocumented migrants to obtain legal status over the following three years.

A history of pathways to legal status

Spain has approved large-scale pathways to legal status for undocumented migrants on at least six other occasions since the 1980s.

Under the socialist government of Felipe González, in 1986, more than 38,000 people obtained legal status. Between 1991 and 1992, also under González’s presidency, legal residence was offered to more than 114,000 people.

Under José María Aznar, in the years 1996, 2000, and 2001, papers were granted to more than 524,000 people. The last large-scale granting of legal status took place almost 21 years ago, under the government of José Luís Rodríguez Zapatero, which processed more than 576,000 applications.

The move from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government comes after US President Donald Trump doubled down on his criticism of Europe’s “politically correct” immigration policies. At the UN General Assembly in September, Trump said Europe was in “serious trouble,” and “invaded by a force of illegal aliens.”

And just days ago at Davos, Trump said certain places in Europe had become “unrecognizable” and “not heading in the right direction.”

Solo unas semanas después de que miles de iraníes murieran en una brutal represión contra la disidencia, la vida en la capital parecía haber vuelto a la normalidad total aquí el martes. Pero el aire de normalidad enmascara una verdad incómoda: que muchos aquí se sienten atrapados entre la retórica del Gobierno iraní y las amenazas de acción militar del presidente estadounidense Donald Trump.

Trump ha advertido que una “armada” se dirige hacia Irán. “Tenemos muchos barcos que van en esa dirección, por si acaso. Preferiría que no pasara nada, pero los estamos vigilando muy de cerca”.

En las calles, los iraníes no están seguros de qué lado supone una amenaza mayor. “No estoy seguro de qué decir. Creo que todos están colaborando unos con otros contra los intereses del pueblo iraní. Nada bueno sucederá para nosotros”, dijo a CNN Mahsan, un joven de Teherán.

Otro residente de Teherán, Mehdi Akbari, dijo: “No creo que Trump se atreva a (atacar). Él es más de fanfarronear”.

Trump ha repetido que está considerando varias opciones, incluyendo atacar a Irán, pero también que Teherán “quiere hablar”, sugiriendo que EE.UU. podría entablar conversaciones con el Gobierno iraní.
