Chips ahoy! English beach covered in French fries and onions after cargo ship spill

By Amarachi Orie, CNN

London (CNN) — A beach in England has disappeared under a blanket of uncooked French fries and onions after a container ship spilled its cargo earlier this month.

A cleanup operation began on Tuesday along the coastline of East Sussex in southeast England after containers on two cargo ships went overboard during storms late last year and earlier this month, according to the local county council.

Joel Bonnici, a resident of the resort town of Eastbourne, told CNN on Monday that he believes the onions began to appear on the shore on Wednesday last week, and some residents went to help collect up the plastic bags in which the onions were packaged.

Bonnici said he and his partner, Trisha, were hiking to see the seals at Falling Sands on Saturday. “Like everyone has been doing to help out, we were picking up the last of the onion bags as we went.”

“We did not expect to turn the corner and see a new scene of chips (French fries) and chip bags stretching across the beach towards the lighthouse,” he said.

“From a distance, you would think the beach was covered in yellow sand like you would see on a tropical island,” Bonnici continued.

“Immediately we both decided the hike was over and we would spend the next couple of hours clearing as many bags as we could until it got too dark to continue. Other families were doing the same and it was nice to see people coming together for the environment,” he added.

‘Thousands of bags’

Environmental group Plastic Free Eastbourne put out a call for more volunteers on Sunday, in a post on Facebook describing “the mess from a shipping container that has spilled thousands of bags of chips and onions all over this vulnerable stretch of land.”

“Seals and other marine life often mistake plastic for food, especially plastic bags which can look like jellyfish in the water,” the group said, adding, “Plastic pollution is a serious threat to the ocean.”

“It is sad that so much plastic pollution is just meters from the seal colony” of 20 to 30 seals, Bonnici said.

“On Sunday, we were so happy to see many local residents responded and came down to help. We cleared loads but still more to do,” he added, warning that those wishing to help should avoid the high tide.

The plastic wrapping for the French fries that washed ashore “has largely been removed by volunteers,” a spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council told CNN on Monday.

“Our thanks to the many dedicated volunteers who have been working hard over recent days to help clear debris from our beaches,” the council added.

Other nearby beaches have also been inundated with debris from the latest cargo spill.

“Yesterday we collected 1.9 tonnes of waste from the beach which is nearly 4 times more than we usually collect at this time of year!” Brighton and Hove City Council said in a post on Facebook on Friday.

Salvage company Brand Marine told CNN in a statement Monday that it is providing recovery operations on behalf of the owner of the Lombok Strait container vessel, which lost 17 refrigerated containers of food during a storm on January 8.

“The company is closely cooperating with local authorities and the UK’s HM Coast Guard on the process of locating and salvaging the containers,” it added.

After decades of fighting the Iranian regime, Kurds see victory edging closer

Members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) participate in a military drill in an outpost near Erbil

By Ben Wedeman, CNN

Northeastern Iraq (CNN) — Piece by piece, the young man in a black and white scarf – a keffiyeh – takes apart his AK-47 assault rifle, placing them side-by-side on the rocky ground. His brow furrows. He can’t push one of the pieces back into place as he tries to reassemble the rifle.

Watched by his comrades, commanders and a CNN crew, the young peshmerga – a Kurdish term meaning “those who face death” – is uncomfortable being the center of attention.

Everyone chuckles. His instructor hands him another rifle to do it all over again.

“They’re new,” Karim Farkhapur says by way of an explanation, referring to the fighters.

Farkhapur is one of the leaders of the Kurdish Democratic Party-Iran (KDPI), the oldest and biggest Iranian Kurdish rebel group. We caught up with him at their camp high in the mountains of northeastern Iraq, more than 13 miles (about 21 kilometers) east of the Iranian border.

Since 1945, the KDPI has fought for the rights of Iranian Kurds, who make up about 10% of the population. First, they fought the Shah of Iran, and then, after the revolution in 1979, began their decades-long struggle against the theocratic rulers in Tehran.

The KDPI is just one of many groups opposed to the Iranian regime. Ethnic Baluch in eastern Iran, Kurds in the west and Arabs in the southwest, have long agitated for either autonomy or independence, in addition to other groups that are opposed to the Islamic Republic on purely ideological grounds. Many of these groups are variously supported either materially or politically by foreign countries.

For some Kurds, the wave of protests that began late last month has raised hopes that perhaps, after 47 years of rule, the end of the Islamic Republic is in sight.

“The regime is weakening daily,” says Mustafa Hijri, the KDPI’s leader. “Its weakness provides more space for us and other freedom-loving parties to strengthen their fight against the regime.”

Hijri claims his party has more people inside Iran than any other, and was a key player supporting recent protests, particularly in the western provinces.

Nineteen-year-old Farina is one of the KDPI’s recruits. On her left shoulder, she carries a Soviet-era Dragunov sniper rifle with a new scope.

She fled Iran, she says, despairing of a life with no future.

“Even if you study you can never become anything unless you are a regime supporter,” she says. “We have no rights, especially as women. That’s why I became a peshmerga: to defend my rights as a Kurd, and as a woman.”

Her unit is made up of men and women – characteristic of many Kurdish factions in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran – which make equal rights for women one of the pillars of their ideology.

There is a well-worn phrase, almost a cliché: “The Kurds have no friends but the mountains.” As a journalist, I’m always hesitant to use it. Yet up here between the towering snow-covered peaks, with dark clouds hovering overhead and snowflakes beginning to fall, one does feel a certain comfort in the remoteness and solitude the mountains provide.

It’s a feeling that, in this dystopian

Dolly Parton turns 80 today and released music to help you celebrate

Dolly Parton performs during

By Lisa Respers France, CNN

(CNN) — How typical that while Monday is Dolly Parton’s birthday, she gives the world a gift instead.

After all, this is a woman known just as much for her philanthropic efforts as for her music, from helping to fund one of the Covid vaccines to sending free books to kids around the country to encourage reading.

Ahead of her 80th birthday on Monday, Parton released a new version of her 1977 single “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” which this time around includes fellow singers Lainey Wilson, Queen Latifah, Reba McEntire and Parton’s goddaughter, Miley Cyrus.

It also features famed composer/producer David Foster on piano and The Christ Church Choir in a version that, according to Parton’s website, “reimagines the song with a message of spreading love and hope.”

“Originally written and recorded 50 years ago in 1976 during a period of personal transition and renewed optimism, ‘Light of a Clear Blue Morning’ has long stood as one of Dolly’s most inspirational works,” a post on the site reads. “Now, five decades later, Dolly revisits the song for a new generation with a powerhouse lineup of female voices.”

Proceeds from both the song and the music video will be donated to benefit pediatric cancer research at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee.

The state of Tennessee, home to both Parton and her Dollywood theme park, has honored the singer, songwriter and actress by declaring Monday as “Dolly Parton Day.”

“Dolly Parton’s life and career is woven into Tennessee’s music, culture, and rich history,” Governor Bill Lee said as part of his proclamation declaring January 19, 2026 as “Dolly Parton Day” in Tennessee. “Her talent and generosity have made a lasting impact on the world, and it is fitting that we honor her 80th birthday by celebrating her remarkable legacy and dedication to the Volunteer State.”

It’s a bright spot for both Parton and fans, as some of the latter grew concerned after she canceled a series of December concerts in Las Vegas due to health concerns and her younger sister, Freida Parton, publicly requested prayers for her big sister.

Dolly Parton later posted a video on social media assuring everyone that all was well and joking “I ain’t dead yet!”

Buffalo Bills fire Sean McDermott

Sean McDermott was head coach of the Buffalo Bills for nine seasons.

By Jill Martin, CNN

(CNN) — Add the Buffalo Bills as yet another NFL team now in search of a head coach.

The Bills fired Sean McDermott after nine seasons at the helm. The move comes after the Bills lost in overtime to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round on Saturday.

With McDermott’s dismissal, 10 teams will have a new head coach next season. Nine of those changes came from firings, while Mike Tomlin opted to step down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. The Giants and Falcons have filled their vacancies with John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski, respectively.

“Sean has done an admirable job of leading our football team for the past 9 seasons,” Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. “But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level.”

McDermott, who was hired by the Bills on January 11, 2017, led Buffalo to the playoffs eight times and won five AFC East division titles.

Still, despite the team’s success with McDermott, the Bills failed to advance to the Super Bowl under his leadership, going 8-8 in the playoffs.

Prior to McDermott’s hire, the Bills hadn’t reached the playoffs since the 1999 season.

“Sean helped change the mindset of this organization and was instrumental in the Bills becoming a perennial playoff team,” Pegula said. “I respect all the work, loyalty and attention to detail he showed for this team and the community.”

The Bills said Monday that Brandon Beane will lead the search for the team’s next head coach.

“Moving forward, Brandon Beane will now serve as the President of Football Operations / General Manager of the Buffalo Bills,” Pegula said. “Brandon will oversee all facets of our football operation, including the oversight of our coaching staff. I have full faith in and have witnessed Brandon’s outstanding leadership style and have confidence in his abilities to lead our organization.”
