(CNN) — After Spain edged past Belgium in dramatic fashion yesterday, we have not one but two quarterfinal matches today.

First, England will look to end Norway’s fairytale run at this World Cup in a match that pits two of the best strikers in the world against each other – Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.

Then, after a short break, the action gets back underway with Lionel Messi’s Argentina facing Switzerland. The prize for both matches is the same: a spot in Wednesday’s semifinal.

But before we get into all of that, it’s my honor to speak more about my favorite soccer player on the planet.

The Main Thing: Why the world has fallen in love with Erling Haaland

He’s just everywhere, isn’t he? You can’t go anywhere on the internet without seeing a reel or meme with Erling Haaland’s face plastered all over it.

Whether it’s him buying cowboy hats in Texas, pranking people into thinking he isn’t a soccer superstar or just documenting his daily life on social media, Haaland’s personality has struck a chord with the general public, and he’s already the unofficial star of the World Cup.

Let’s quickly deal with what he’s done on the pitch so far. Haaland has scored five goals and fired Norway into the quarterfinals against England. Even if he loses today, the 25-year-old has led the team to levels that few could have ever imagined.

But he has such raw ability that even those without an interest in soccer can see he’s something different and someone a little special. There is just a simplicity to everything he does on and off the pitch that makes him strangely relatable and real.

It’s a testament to his global appeal that I’m sure you’ll have had conversations about Haaland no matter where you are in the world, even with people you didn’t think cared about this World Cup. Even my sister-in-law from Ireland, who has no interest in soccer, seems obsessed.

“I don’t like football but seeing the giant blonde man bulldoze through defenders and nonchalantly score goals is great entertainment,” she texted the other day, capturing the raw energy that makes him so popular.

Before the rest of the world fell in love with Haaland, those who follow soccer closely had already enjoyed years of entertainment.

He first started drawing eyeballs after smashing defenses and scoring a bag full of goals in the Champions League. But it was also his post-match interviews that became such a joy to watch – just so honest, so real and ultimately so funny.

Then, as he moved up the ranks, we’ve learned more about his life and fallen further in love with maybe the most likeable superstar in soccer. Whether it’s his long-term relationship with his partner, his own YouTube channel, his love for drinking raw milk, his appetite for eating kebab pizzas, his stint making his own rap video or his ability to wind up opponents like no one else can.

Even now, after years of media training, he’s often got a wicked line up his sleeve. After all, he’s spent the last few days urging the British media to put more pressure on the England team, doing so with that trademark grin and glint in his eye.

That maverick attitude is something he’s translated onto the pitch at this World Cup, and any pitch he steps onto, to be honest. His trademark smirk and knowing stare are now feared by any opponent up against Norway, but don’t be fooled into thinking Haaland isn’t serious about his career.

He is a true professional and dedicates his life to getting better. And while he’s quick to laugh and make a joke, there is a real steeliness to his game. Whatever he says, he knows he has the ability to take Norway into the semifinals, and he’ll be willing to run through a brick wall to make that happen.

(CNN) — Four settlers were arrested after an attack on CNN and other journalists in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, according to Israeli Police.

The journalists were near the village of Sinjil north of Ramallah for the one-year anniversary of the killing of Saif Musallet last July, a Palestinian-American who was beaten to death by Jewish settlers.

Within minutes of arriving at the location where Musallet was killed, Israeli settlers descended on the area. As the CNN team and other journalists tried to leave, a group of four settlers blocked the road with their car and tried to keep the vehicles from moving forward.

The four settlers were wielding wooden and metal rods and stones. One settler brandished a knife and tried to puncture the tires of CNN’s vehicle.

The settlers then began to jump on the vehicle behind CNN’s — carrying another group of journalists — and smashed the windshield of that vehicle. Another group of settlers tried to block a separate exit route before chasing the journalists towards the town of Sinjil.

When police officers and Israeli soldiers arrived at the scene, police say they arrested four suspects before locating their vehicle nearby. They seized clubs and a knife from inside the vehicle, police said.

“The Israel Police and the (Israel Defense Forces) view any manifestation of violence or causing damage to property very seriously, especially when it concerns media personnel performing their work,” police said in a statement.

After the killing of Musallet in July 2025, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called it a “criminal and terrorist act,” calling on authorities to investigate. But Musallet’s father told CNN no one has been arrested since the killing.

This attack on journalists comes just days after US Rep. Ro Khanna was detained by settlers near the village of Turmus Ayya in the West Bank. The village has a population of thousands of Palestinian-Americans who have come under repeated attack by settlers in the area.

Khanna visited the village to show solidarity with American citizens who have told CNN they feel forgotten by their government.

“I saw the arrogance in the eyes of those settlers, 21- and 22-year-olds with guns, laughing that they had detained us, the arrogance of those young IDF soldiers that my tax dollars are funding, having no respect for the fact that they were detaining Americans, no respect that there was an American congressperson in that bus, and laughing when our translator told them that there are Americans there and the American embassy is concerned,” Khanna told Reuters.

In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the issue of settler violence has “blown up beyond belief.” He described the perpetrators as a group of 150 “juvenile delinquents.” He said the police and military “take actions,” but the courts in Israel “are very lenient” against those convicted of settler violence.

Despite Netanyahu’s statements, the West Bank has seen a surge of settler violence – some with instances of Israeli soldiers standing idly by – in conjunction with the Israeli government rapidly expanding settlements throughout the territory.

La temperatura de las relaciones entre México y Estados Unidos, que con frecuencia está en riesgo de aumentar entre estos dos países vecinos separados por una de las fronteras más calientes del mundo, volvió a subir esta semana y no parece haber señales de enfriamiento en el corto plazo.

El incremento no solo se dio por los reclamos de México para que Estados Unidos explique cómo se produjo la detención del capo mexicano Ismael “el Mayo” Zambada, quien fue arrestado en territorio estadounidense en julio de 2024 después de ser trasladado en avión en circunstancias poco claras. También se debió a un hecho enmarcado en el endurecimiento de la política migratoria del Gobierno de Donald Trump: la muerte del mexicano Lorenzo Salgado durante un operativo desplegado en Houston por el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés).

De acuerdo con el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de Estados Unidos (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés), al que está adscrito ICE, agentes identificaron a Salgado como un inmigrante indocumentado y quisieron detenerlo el martes por la mañana, pero él supuestamente se negó a frenar su vehículo, embistió a los uniformados y uno de ellos le disparó “en defensa propia”. Sin embargo, la familia de Salgado niega que el incidente haya ocurrido así.

“Estos vehículos no estaban marcados. No tenían emblemas ni logotipos ni luces intermitentes. No había manera de que él supiera que eran agentes de ICE. Sé que mi papá se habría detenido si los agentes de ICE se hubieran identificado formal y claramente, al menos a través de las marcas en sus vehículos. El Gobierno de la presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum informó el jueves que 17 inmigrantes mexicanos han muerto en centros u operativos de ICE en lo que va del segundo mandato presidencial de Trump, por lo que anunció una estrategia legal que incluye denuncias penales ante la justicia de Estados Unidos, acciones civiles y solicitudes ante la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) y el Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos (ONU-DH).

Consultado sobre el tema, el DHS defendió este viernes la actuación de ICE. En un correo electrónico enviado a CNN, rechazó que haya un aumento de muertes en sus instalaciones u operaciones y aseguró que las personas detenidas “reciben un debido proceso completo, son provistas con alimentos adecuados, agua y tratamiento médico, y tienen oportunidades de comunicarse con sus familiares y abogados”. En la misma línea, negó que sus funcionarios cometan abusos.

“Los agentes de ICE están entrenados para usar el mínimo de fuerza necesario para resolver situaciones peligrosas para priorizar la seguridad del público y de nuestros oficiales. Los agentes están altamente entrenados en tácticas de distensión y regularmente reciben entrenamiento en uso de la fuerza”, dijo.

Analistas consultados este viernes coincidieron en que la muerte de Salgado se suma a las tensiones entre los gobiernos de Sheinbaum y Trump, aunque difirieron en su valoración sobre la respuesta de México a este y otros fallecimientos.

(CNN) — It’s been one week since Nolan Wells and his friends went on a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island – an uninhabited stretch of pristine wilderness off the Mississippi coast with no shelters, no facilities and no communications.

His friends made it back home. Wells, a student and wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, did not. His body was found by a National Park Service agent face-down in the water off the shoreline Monday morning.

Now, many questions remain unanswered: Why didn’t he return on the boat with his friends? Why didn’t he have his cellphone with him? Was Wells involved in an altercation? Did he break off from his friends to speak with a girl on the island?

While the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating, Wells’ death has stoked speculation and distrust in part due to Mississippi’s fraught racial history, the fact that Wells appeared to be the only person of color in an image with friends on the trip, and an earlier comment from the sheriff saying he didn’t suspect foul play – but didn’t explain why.

“This does not smell right,” the Rev. Al Sharpton said at a news conference Friday. “Some people are saying, ‘Reverend, are y’all bringing in race?’ Well, we’re not bringing in race. But we’re not discounting race, either, because we don’t know what it is. So, to tell us, ‘Don’t rush to judgment saying it was racist’ is fine. But then I’m telling you, don’t rush to judgment saying it was not racism, because we do not know.”

But nothing about the case – other than speculation about race – is particularly unusual, CNN law enforcement analyst Charles Ramsey said. It’s quite common for law enforcement officers to take a week or longer to gather all the necessary evidence and interviews to determine what caused a death.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter did not respond to CNN’s questions Friday, such as whether all of Wells’ friends from the trip had been interviewed. But Ledbetter previously told CNN affiliate WXXV, “It’s gonna take a lot of hard work” to get to the bottom of this case.

Attorney Ben Crump, who’s representing Wells’ family, said he’s dismayed by the lack of clear details that have emerged in the case.
