Jose Manuel Perez of Oxnard sentenced to 65 months for years-long smuggling of reptiles

LOS ANGELES (KEYT) – Jose Manuel Perez was sentenced to 65 months in federal prison after smuggling at least 1,700 reptiles from Mexico into the United States over a six-year period.

Perez pled guilty to two counts of smuggling goods into the Untied States and one count of wildlife trafficking in August of 2022 noted the First Assistant's Office for the Central District of California in a press release Thursday.

Between January of 2016 and February of 2022, Perez and other co-conspirators smuggled wildlife from Mexico and other countries without getting permits required by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flores as well as without declaring any wildlife importations explained the federal prosecutor's office.

Participants in the scheme used social media to buy and negotiate the terms of the sales and deliveries into the United States and Perez advertised the sale of the animals on social media as well as photos and videos that showed the animals being taken from the wild shared the First Assistant's Office.

Animals put up for sale included Yucatán box turtles, Mexican box turtles, baby crocodiles, and Mexican beaded lizards noted federal prosecutors.

According to the First Assistant's Office, some animals were retrieved from Cuidad Juárez International Airport and eventually shipped by vehicle into El Paso, Texas and Perez paid co-conspirators a fee for each border crossing based on the number of animals and the risk of being detected by law enforcement.

Perez and a co-conspirator also traveled to Mexico to purchase live animals captured from the wild, smuggled them into the United States, and transported them to Perez's home in Missouri and then to his home in Oxnard detailed the First Assistant's Office.

In total, Perez facilitated the smuggling of at least 1,700 animals, generating sales of more than $739,000 stated the federal prosecutor's office.

Perez is already serving a nine-year sentence for being a felon in possession of firearms in connection with prior felony convictions for street terrorism and assault with a deadly weapon in Ventura County noted the First Assistant's Office.

Los números de Enner Valencia con Ecuador: el delantero que “guarda” sus goles para el Mundial

No es ningún secreto. La de Ecuador es una selección que tiene como principal fortaleza su defensa. Jugadores como Piero Hincapié, Willian Pacho y Moisés Caicedo llevaron a que el combinado nacional termine la eliminatoria sudamericana como el equipo menos goleado del torneo, con solo cinco tantos en contra en 18 encuentros.

La última línea hace que Ecuador llegue al Mundial 2026 con altas expectativas. Sin embargo, si la Tri desea llegar lejos en la Copa del Mundo, también deberá conseguir un alto rendimiento a la hora de anotar goles.

En Ecuador, este rol recae en Enner Valencia, el goleador histórico de la selección con 49 tantos y uno de los referentes del equipo con 36 años.

Valencia está próximo a disputar su tercer Mundial, torneo en donde tiene un registro de gol llamativo. El artillero ecuatoriano tiene seis goles en seis partidos jugados, es decir que cuenta con un promedio goleador de un tanto por encuentro mundialista.

Además, Valencia tiene buena efectividad en los debuts de Ecuador en Copas del Mundo.

“Superman”, como se le conoce popularmente, marcó goles en los debuts de la Tri en los Mundiales de Brasil 2014 y Qatar 2022, y en este último torneo incluso anotó el primer tanto de toda la competencia.

En total, Valencia le ha marcado un gol a Suiza, dos a Honduras, dos a Qatar y uno a los Países Bajos en el máximo escenario del fútbol mundial. Por este motivo, los seguidores de la selección de Ecuador ven en el atacante del Pachuca la llave del gol de la Tri.

Con el tiempo, Valencia se ha convertido en un referente de su selección. A sus 36 años está por disputar su tercera Copa del Mundo y sigue destacando en su equipo.

En las eliminatorias rumbo a Norteamérica 2026, Valencia fue el goleador de Ecuador con seis tantos, dos menos que el goleador del torneo, Lionel Messi.

Actualmente, Valencia se desempeña en el fútbol mexicano con el Pachuca y en 22 partidos disputados tiene ocho tantos.

En total consiguió siete títulos en cuatro ligas distintas, y a lo largo de su carrera vistió las camisetas del Emelec, Pachuca, West Ham, Everton, Tigres, Inter de Porto Alegre y Fenerbahçe.

Con el equipo turco consiguió su mejor rendimiento. Allí, “Superman” marcó 59 goles en 116 partidos y ganó un título.

Pese a no contar con este ritmo goleador a nivel de clubes, Valencia viene encontrándose con el gol recientemente con su selección y tiene dos goles en cinco encuentros de preparación de cara al Mundial.

Valencia es el líder de la selección de Ecuador y uno de los principales generadores de ataque en el equipo que dirige el argentino Sebastián Beccacece.

Pese a su edad, el delantero todavía cuenta con una potencia y velocidad que lo ayudan a competir ante los defensores de élite, y esto es justamente lo que aprovecha Ecuador.

Jugadores como Caicedo y Gonzalo Plata buscan a Valencia al espacio para que el delantero aproveche los claros a las espaldas de los defensores y genere opciones de gol.

La capacidad física de Valencia también le permite ir a las bandas y alternar posiciones con los otros delanteros que estén en el campo.

Tras la última fecha FIFA, Ecuador mostró una estrategia de presión alta con Valencia como primer defensor, presionando la salida de los defensores rivales con el objetivo de forzar un error y generar un contragolpe.

Valencia intentará aplicar todas estas facetas de su juego cuando entre al campo para el debut de Ecuador en el Mundial. Él ya reveló que esta Copa del Mundo será su último torneo oficial con el país, por lo que buscará cerrarlo con broche de oro.

Two local men arrested for the online exploitation of minors after Sheriff’s Office investigations

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – Two men were arrested in connection with two separate investigations involving online exploitation of minors last month.

The arrests were part of Operation Firewall, a multi-agency task force created to investigate crimes related to the exploitation of children noted the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office in a press release Thursday.

On April 8, detectives began to investigate a 27-year-old Ventura man after he contacted a detective posing as a 13-year-old girl through an online chat forum that was specific to the Santa Barbara area detailed the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

During the investigation into the 27-year-old, he sent the person he thought was a 13-year-old lewd images and videos and requested related material in exchange shared the local law enforcement agency.

Detectives arrested the Ventura resident at his home in the 1700 block of Ventura Avenue on April 22 ad he was booked on felony charges including sending harmful matter to a minor and attempted lewd acts with a child noted the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, the 27-year-old used online accounts with names unrelated to his real identity and avoided using profile photos.

Guardians are asked to closely monitor their children's online activity, discuss internet safety with them, and remain aware of the platforms their children use while online.

"If there is a chat room where kids are present, predators will seek it out," said Sheriff's Detective Francesca Arnoldi. "Parents should know that offenders often hide behind fake names, fake photos, and false identities to gain access to children online. Open communication and active monitoring of online activity are critical tools in keeping kids safe."

The 27-year-old posted his $100,000 bail and is currently not in custody added the Sheriff's Office.

Detectives participating in the task force received an online tip about a local person attempting to upload a video that contained lewd images of a child stated the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Sheriff's Office, detectives identified the person as a 61-year-old Goleta man and on April 28, he was arrested at his home in the 200 block of Orange Avenue.

He was booked on felony charges related to obscene images depicting a minor and he was later released on a $100,000 bail noted the local Sheriff's Office.
