(CNN) — In December 2015, when Donald Trump was still a long-shot candidate in the GOP’s sprawling primary field, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham offered a brazen assessment of the political outsider.

“You know how you make America great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to hell,” Graham, who was also among the dozen Republicans running for the 2016 presidential nomination, declared on CNN. Then, he pilloried Trump’s proposed ban on all Muslims from entering the country: “He’s a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot.”

It was the unlikely beginning of what would become one of Washington’s key political relationships. The Graham-Trump alliance — which at first flummoxed many in both men’s inner circles — steered two terms of presidential foreign policy across multiple continents, and the GOP’s agenda on Capitol Hill.

Graham, the ultimate Washington power player, had spent years dealmaking with Democrats, including President Barack Obama. In his 30-plus years in politics, he refused to ascribe to party-line ideology, which he made clear with his frequent attempts to fix the US immigration system, or his disgust of the tea party movement.

Then came Trump — and his stunning 2016 win. Within months, Graham had transfigured himself from Trump’s most prominent primary foe into one of his most critical partners — his closest ally in Congress, a fierce TV surrogate and frequent golf partner.

Beginning with a March 2017 lunch that brokered peace between the two men, Graham persistently worked his way into Trump’s inner circle through frequent phone calls and golf outings. (Graham joked afterward that the meeting went so well that he gave the president his “new cell phone number,” after Trump gave out the senator’s number at a campaign rally.)

“Lindsey used to be a great enemy of mine, and now he’s a great friend of mine,” Trump marveled during one meeting with Senate Republicans in 2018. “I really like Lindsey. Can you believe that?”

In response to Graham’s unexpected death over the weekend, Trump called him “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known.”

For Trump’s second term, Graham put himself at the center of the president’s biggest ambitions, including the Iran war and a massive modernization of the Pentagon. He would have been a critical voice in multiple looming issues on the Hill — such as a bipartisan push for Russian sanctions, a deal on which Graham had announced just 48 hours before his death, and the confirmation of Trump’s new attorney general pick.

“He was one of those guys, just like Marco [Rubio], just like Jeb Bush, who didn’t understand the Trump phenomenon,” one longtime Trump adviser said of Graham’s initial resistance to Trump’s rise within the GOP. “But eventually Lindsey Graham figured it out. He saw that Donald Trump was where all the energy and the passion was in the Republican Party.”

Graham over the last decade morphed into one of Trump’s most trusted counselors on high-stakes geopolitical matters, the adviser said, earning the president’s confidence even as they often disagreed on key strategic issues, including the extent of US support for Ukraine and the White House’s efforts to negotiate an end to the Iran war.

“He looked at Lindsey as one of his foreign policy experts,” the adviser said. “He didn’t always agree with him, but I think he respected him.”

(CNN) — Thinking about buying a new laptop or game console anytime soon? Be prepared to pay up.

Point the finger at the AI boom. Data centers have led to a surge in demand for memory, a critical piece of computer hardware that’s needed to quickly process information.

While that’s good news for memory makers like Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix, it’s bad news for consumers.

Chipmakers can’t produce enough memory for both data centers and consumer devices, leading to a shortage that’s driven up prices for products from Apple, Microsoft and Nintendo, among others.

And experts say there’s no near-term fix in sight. The shortage is expected to persist until at least 2028 as memory giants work to build new plants. Even then, some analysts don’t expect prices to return to pre-shortage levels.

Asha Sharma, CEO of Microsoft’s Xbox division, recently called the memory shortage “the most severe hardware crisis in history” in an email to employees announcing layoffs and structural changes.

What’s getting more expensive?

The price hikes appear to be hitting game consoles, tablets and laptops the hardest. The PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Valve Steam Deck and a slew of Apple products — including iPad and MacBook models — have all gotten more expensive over the last few months. Microsoft said it plans to raise Xbox prices in August.

And that’s going to weigh heavily on smartphone and laptop sales, analysts say. Global PC shipments are expected to fall 11.3% in 2026, while the smartphone industry is projected to record its steepest annual decline, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

But not every tech product is expected to be impacted; devices like smartwatches and wireless earbuds don’t require as much memory.

For other bigger-ticket items, there’s a mixed outlook: Prices will continue to rise, but the biggest price hikes may soon be behind us.

“That largest bump has happened now,” said Jitesh Ubrani, director of consumer devices research at the IDC. “They’ll continue to rise at a slower pace going forward, but they’re still rising.”

What should you do?

Some analysts suggest buying now before prices increase further. Even if memory component prices come down, it’ll probably take at least a year for those changes to trickle down to consumers, according to Mike Howard, vice president of memory coverage at research firm TechInsights.

But it also depends on the product since many tech companies tend to release new gadgets in the fall ahead of the holiday rush. For example, you wouldn’t want to pay more for an iPad if Apple is about to release a new one.

Tech companies tend to launch new devices around the same time every year.

(CNN) — In the days since the puzzling death of an 18-year-old, investigators have undertaken a painstaking effort to reconstruct the events that unfolded on Horn Island, a remote barrier island about 10 miles off the Mississippi coast.

The investigation has unfolded rapidly since Nolan Wells disappeared on the Fourth of July from the island he was visiting with high school friends. While those friends returned to the mainland, Wells’ body was found days later in the water.

Now, the search for answers extends well beyond the remote island.

As public interest escalates, investigators are working to piece together Wells’ final hours while his family continues to press for transparency and answers. The young man’s death has stoked speculation and distrust in part due to Mississippi’s fraught racial history and the fact that Wells appeared to be the only person of color in an image with friends on the trip.

Here’s a timeline of key developments in the case and where the investigation stands.

A familiar trip to a remote island

Wells graduated in 2025 from Ocean Springs High School in the coastal Mississippi town of Ocean Springs, just east of Biloxi. He then enrolled in Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he was a wide receiver on their football team, according to The Associated Press.

On the evening of July 3, the teen made his family salmon for dinner before leaving to spend the night with his friends ahead of the holiday weekend.

“It was hug, kiss, and he left,” Christine Wonsley, his mother, said.

And like countless Americans across the country, Wells set out to mark the July Fourth holiday on the water.

He joined his friends for a boat trip to Horn Island – a federally protected barrier island known for its untouched beaches, shifting shoreline and quiet isolation. It wasn’t uncommon for Wells to visit the island with friends, according to his family.

Wells was supposed to return to school after the holiday weekend to start training for the upcoming football season, his father Elmore Wonsley said in an interview with “Good Morning America.”

In photos from the boat that day, the 18-year-old towers above his friends, his arm casually slung around their shoulders as he smiles for the camera.

But by the time the group returned to the mainland that afternoon, a day that began as a holiday celebration took an unsettling turn: Wells was not with them. His family reported him missing the night of July 4, after they received a phone call around 11 p.m. from one of his friends.

What followed was an intense search effort that would soon end tragically.

Hope gives way to a widening search

As the first hours passed without answers, Wells’ mother turned to social media, sharing desperate appeals for information about her son’s whereabouts. In a post on the morning of July 5, Christine Wonsley said she and her husband had possession of their son’s cellphone and that they’d traveled to the island to search for him.
