(CNN) — A 2-year-old child is among at least five people who were killed when a Mexican Navy plane carrying medical patients crashed into the waters of Galveston Bay in Texas on Monday afternoon, US Coast Guard officials say.

Eight people were on board the plane – four Naval crew members and four civilians, the Mexican Navy confirmed in a statement. The plane had been transporting burn patients, Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen told CNN affiliate KPRC.

One person remains unaccounted for, an official with the Coast Guard’s Heartland sector told CNN. Two were recovered alive in undisclosed conditions.

Sky Decker, who lives near the site of the crash, told CNN he jumped in to rescue a woman trapped in the debris when divers were not yet on scene.

“Everyone was just waiting for divers to arrive. And I thought if there’s a woman alive in that plane, she’s not going to be alive for long,” he told CNN. “It was critical to get her out of there.”

Decker worked his way through the wreckage before pulling the woman out alive. “The woman was surviving by breathing on a pocket of air that was only about 3 inches from the ceiling of the plane,” he said.

He said he went back through the wreckage and also recovered a man who was already deceased.

The cause of the crash is being investigated, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The aircraft, a small twin turbo plane, took off from Mérida, the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán, and was headed for Galveston Scholes International Airport, which lies about 50 miles southeast of Houston, according to data from FlightRadar24.

Mexico’s Navy said the plane was helping with a medical mission in coordination with the Michou and Mau Foundation, which provides emergency transports to children with life-threatening burns to Shriners Children’s hospital in Galveston, according to the nonprofit’s website.

A statement from Mexico’s Navy shared on X said the plane had an “incident” during its approach to Galveston, but did not elaborate.

Billy Howell, who works at Galveston Bait and Tackle, told CNN affiliate KTRK there was “literally zero visibility” at the time of the crash, adding it is not uncommon near the island, where foggy conditions can roll in within minutes.

“As the sea fog goes and the wind blows and changes directions, the fog does get a lot more dense,” Howell said.

A dive team, crime scene unit, drone unit and patrols were at the scene Monday night, the sheriff’s office said in a social media post. A call was received about the crash

Mientras conduce entre montañas, arroyos y ríos cerca de su casa en el suroeste de Alemania, Kate Raidt dice que el paisaje aún le llama la atención. Bromea diciendo que es “probablemente la única madre de familia estadounidense a la que le encantan los partidos lejos de casa”.

Raidt espera con ansias el viaje desde Ulm, su ciudad natal, hasta Múnich para los compromisos futbolísticos de su hijo adolescente. “Es muy difícil estar de mal humor cuando conduces a través de toda esta belleza”, dice.

“Cuando miro hacia afuera y veo los Alpes suizos o escucho el agua correr por un arroyo o un río cercano, me hace muy feliz”, le dice Raidt, originaria de Atlanta, a CNN Travel.

Un año y medio después de mudarse de Estados Unidos a Alemania con su hijo Bodie, Raidt afirma que la mudanza ha ido “mucho mejor de lo que nadie podría haber imaginado” y que ambos están prosperando.

Vivir cerca de parajes naturales como el río Danubio y los Alpes bávaros ha transformado su rutina diaria. Está constantemente en movimiento: practica senderismo, monta en bicicleta por el Danubio, visita baños termales o va de “caza de castillos” con su hijo.

“Esa es probablemente la mayor ventaja de estar aquí”, dice, elogiando un estilo de vida que, en su opinión, se centra menos en la cantidad y más en la calidad.

“Mi salud física. Mi salud mental… Tener la posibilidad de hacer una actividad física tan fácil y rapidamente a mi alcance me salvó por completo”.

La decisión de mudarse surgió de las oportunidades que le ofrecía su hijo. Bodie, un hábil futbolista, se había animado a probar en varios clubes alemanes y había recibido ofertas.

Aunque Raidt había visitado Alemania con frecuencia (su hija nació allí durante su matrimonio con un alemán), no planeaba regresar definitivamente. Pero las ambiciones de su hijo la hicieron cambiar de opinión.

Le dijo que esperarían hasta que su hermana mayor, Conley, se fuera a la universidad. “No quería que viviera solo con una familia anfitriona, así que decidí irme con él”, cuenta.

Unas semanas después de que su hija se graduara en 2024, Raidt y Bodie dejaron Estados Unidos para irse a Alemania.

Empezaron en un Airbnb en Ulm, una ciudad histórica entre Múnich y Stuttgart, donde Bodie se unió a un equipo local. “Literalmente tenía dos maletas”, dice Raidt. “No teníamos amigos. Ni familia. Ni nada… Así que, simplemente dijimos listos, ¡ya! ¡Hagámoslo realidad!”.

Raidt dice que pronto se dio cuenta de que tenía mucho que aprender. Uno de sus primeros desafíos fue la educación. Bodie tiene doble nacionalidad, pero no pudo matricularse en un instituto alemán porque “no tenía suficiente experiencia con idiomas extranjeros”.

Finalmente, se matriculó en un colegio internacional, lo que, según Raidt, fue un punto de inflexión. Enseguida se conectó con otros padres expatriados.

“Todos habíamos dejado nuestros países de origen para venir aquí”, dice. Su apoyo emocional, añade Raidt, la ha ayudado en momentos difíciles.

A medida que Raidt se adaptaba, empezó a apreciar más la vida en Alemania, más allá de su trabajo remoto para una empresa estadounidense.

Le encantaba que “la gente se reúna constantemente para tomar un café”, a diferencia de Estados Unidos, donde “todos pasan rápidamente por el autoservicio de Starbucks”.

“Estados Unidos solo tiene una ciudad con una cultura definida y es Nueva Orleans”, dice. “Así que Alemania me recuerda un poco a eso”.

Pero admite que también tiene sus inconvenientes. No le gusta la cantidad de cigarrillos que se fuman y algunos aspectos de la vida cotidiana le parecen demasiado rígidos, demasiado definidos.

Rain chances arise Tuesday morning as a large firehouse of moisture moves down the coastline of California. It will be a messy and dangerous commute in some areas Wednesday morning. This is a dangerous timeframe for travel, and its highly advised to stay hime when possible. Peak rainfall rates indicate 1.5inches of rainfall an hour near the Santa Barbara coastline. This will cause flooding and overflowing creeks and rivers. Wednesday night will be relatively light rain before another round of heavy showers move in.

The next pulse of heavy rain arrives Thursday. There is a major risk of flooding, downed trees and power lines. Santa might need a boat! We begin to see heavy sheets of rain transition to spotty thunderstorms as the wake of the atmospheric river moves down through LA and San Diego into Friday. These thunderstorms could still produce heavy downpours and lightning, use caution and plan some indoor activities. We will stay with a cold and soggy pattern through the new year. (CNN) — An initial reading of third-quarter gross domestic product showed the US economy expanded at an inflation-adjusted annualized rate of 4.3%, a far faster pace than the 3.8% recorded in the second quarter, according to Commerce Department data released Tuesday. That’s the fastest growth rate in two years.

An acceleration in consumer spending, up 3.5% from 2.5% in the second quarter, and exports, up 8.8% from -1.8% in the second quarter, were the main contributors to the third-quarter GDP reading.

Though very backward-looking, given the release was delayed due to the government shutdown, the report likely means the Federal Reserve has less need to cut rates to support the economy when it reconvenes next month.

Stock futures were little changed after the data release. Dow futures were down 40 points. S&P 500 futures fell 0.06% and Nasdaq 100 futures ticked down by 0.08%.
