Al menos 7 personas murieron y 17 resultaron heridas de gravedad este sábado por un ataque con artefacto explosivo contra vehículos en la vía Panamericana en el Cauca, en el suroeste de Colombia, informaron autoridades del país. Las Fuerzas Militares de Colombia atribuyen el accionar violento a las disencias de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), bajo el mando de alias “Iván Mordisco”.

El ataque fue en el sector de El Túnel, Cajibío, dijo el gobernador del Cauca, Octavio Guzmán. “Fue activado un artefacto explosivo en la vía Panamericana, en el sector de El Túnel, Cajibío, en un ataque indiscriminado contra la población civil que, de manera preliminar, deja 7 civiles muertos y más de 20 heridos de gravedad”, escribió el funcionario en X.

Lo sucedido “es una tragedia que nos desgarra como departamento y enluta profundamente a nuestras familias”, dijo Guzmán. “No hay palabras suficientes para el dolor que hoy sentimos”.

El gobernador del Cauca señaló además que en las últimas horas se han registrado otros hechos violentos en otros municipios como El Túnel, El Tambo, Caloto, Popayán, Guachené, Mercaderes y Miranda; e hizo un llamado “urgente” a las autoridades nacionales para garantizar la seguridad. “Estamos ante una escalada terrorista que exige respuestas inmediatas”, afirmó.

Por su parte, el comandante general de las Fuerzas Militares colombianas, Hugo Alejandro López Barreto, explicó en conferencia de prensa que en las últimas horas han tenido lugar “una ola de atentados” en los departamentos del Cauca y Valle del Cauca, por los que responsabilizó a las “estructuras criminales” de las disidencias de las FARC, “bajo el mando de alias ‘Iván Mordisco’”.

“Durante estos dos días en el departamento de Cauca y Valle del Cauca se han presentado 26 acciones terroristas que han afectado a nuestra población civil”, afirmó López, que aseguró que esta serie de ataques responden a la “presión sostenida” que ha ejercido el Gobierno colombiano sobre el accionar delictivo de estos grupos.

“Ante esta ofensiva, estos criminales recurren al terrorismo y a la ejecución de crímenes de lesa humanidad en un intento desesperado por aliviar la presión y generar un impacto mediático que oculte su debilitamiento”, dijo el jefe de las Fuerzas Militares.

El presidente de Colombia, Gustavo Petro, pidió “la máxima persecución mundial contra este grupo narcoterrorista”, a los que también vinculó con alias “Iván Mordisco”.

“Los que atentaron y mataron a siete civiles e hirieron a 17 civiles más en Cajibío, muchos indígenas entre ellos, son terroristas, fascistas y narcotraficantes”, escribió Petro en X.

El ataque se produce horas después de la visita de Petro a Venezuela junto a la cúpula militar de Colombia, donde anunció con la presidenta encargada Delcy Rodríguez que acordaron combatir a los grupos criminales en la frontera entre ambos países, una de las más extensas de la región, con más de 2.219 kilómetros.

Un bloqueo naval de Estados Unidos sobre Irán está estrangulando los principales corredores económicos de la República Islámica, dejando a Teherán ante una inminente crisis de almacenamiento de petróleo y a sus ciudadanos lidiando con el aumento de los precios de los alimentos y el repunte del desempleo.

Sin embargo, a menos que Washington esté dispuesto a mantener su bloqueo naval durante varios meses más, será difícil desmantelar por completo una economía iraní que ha pasado años adaptándose a la presión estadounidense y a sanciones paralizantes.

Y por mucho que Irán esté sufriendo, sus dirigentes serán conscientes de que Trump también está bajo presión, con el presidente de Estados Unidos enfrentando un creciente rechazo interno por la guerra y con unas elecciones de mitad de mandato cruciales en el horizonte. Teherán puede haber calculado que Trump cederá primero.

Hace apenas tres meses, el Gobierno iraní estaba al borde del colapso después de que la gente saliera a las calles en todo el país para protestar por la mala gestión de la economía. Ese mismo gobierno recibió un salvavidas cuando Estados Unidos e Israel lanzaron sus ataques, y ahora está utilizando el pretexto de la guerra para justificar unas condiciones económicas desastrosas ante una nación de 92 millones de habitantes.

“Irán ya se había enfrentado a la campaña de máxima presión en el primer mandato de Trump, y se vio obligado a recortar su producción de petróleo a la mitad”, dijo a CNN Esfandyar Batmanghelidj, director ejecutivo del centro de estudios Borse and Bazaar.

“Si el bloqueo se mantiene durante meses, sin duda afectará las perspectivas económicas de Irán, pero la expectativa iraní es que Estados Unidos mismo no puede tolerar esa presión durante tanto tiempo”.

Lo que comenzó como un bloqueo de los puertos iraníes hace más de diez días se ha expandido a nivel global, con cada barco vinculado a Irán enfrentando un escrutinio minucioso por parte de las fuerzas navales estadounidenses durante todo su trayecto.

Uno de los principales resultados del bloqueo sería dejar a Irán incapaz de exportar su principal mercancía. Si el país no puede mover los millones de barriles de petróleo que produce a diario, podría verse obligado a recortar la producción. Las exportaciones de crudo y productos petrolíferos son la principal fuente de divisas de Irán.

Irán probablemente podría sostener la producción actual de petróleo durante otros dos o tres meses antes de que los problemas de almacenamiento se conviertan en “una consideración significativa”, dijo Batmanghelidj.

Además, Irán todavía dispone de mucho espacio de almacenamiento de petróleo en tierra, dijo la firma de análisis de transporte marítimo Kpler, señalando que tiene casi 30 millones de barriles de margen, lo que significa que aún está a semanas de alcanzar su límite.

Incluso podría ampliar aún más la capacidad de almacenamiento si encuentra otros métodos para descargar el petróleo almacenado.

Una opción que Irán está explorando es utilizar sus petroleros de crudo retirados. Se observó que un gran transportador de 30 años llamado NASHA navegaba hacia terminales de almacenamiento de petróleo en la isla de Jarg para posiblemente descargar petróleo y actuar como almacenamiento flotante, de acuerdo con Tankertrackers.com, una empresa de inteligencia marítima que rastrea envíos de crudo.

Louisville, Kentucky (CNN) — Minutes after his beloved St. John’s basketball team lost to Duke in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, a dejected Mike Repole stood in the Capital One Arena stands in his Red Storm jacket and shrugged.

Smiling morosely, he said to CNN Sports, “At least we have the Arkansas Derby tomorrow.’’

Such is the world that Repole, the business magnate, operates in. One sports door closes, another opens for the St. John’s alum who is equally devoted to the ponies.

But Repole’s sporting success has proven far more elusive than his golden touch in business. The founder of Vitamin Water, Repole sold that business for $4 billion and then started BodyArmor, a sports energy drink, eventually selling that for $5 billion.

Yet his Red Storm, the roster built at head coach Rick Pitino’s suggestion with Repole’s financial backing, still have not crested their way back into the Final Four, and his horses are 0 for 8 in the Kentucky Derby. Three – Uncle Mo, Forte and Fierceness – were favorites; Uncle Mo and Forte were scratched before the race and Fierceness finished 15th.

Repole will get another shot with another favorite on this first Saturday of May. Renegade, the horse he was itching to watch after the Sweet 16, not only won that Arkansas Derby, he was slated as the 4-1 pick in this year’s Kentucky Derby following yesterday’s post position draw.

Except, like most things in Repole’s sporting life, Renegade’s run will not come without complications. The Todd Pletcher-trained horse drew the dreaded No. 1 position, starting on the rail in the 20-horse field, which can be a traffic nightmare as the horses run for the first turn. The last horse to win from the rail was Ferdinand, a full 40 years ago.

Another one of Repole’s Derby entrants, Mo Donegal, drew the rail in 2022. The 10-1 pick got shoved to 19th early before rallying to finish fifth.

As Renegade’s post position was announced, the crowd of horse racing fans gathered around the Churchill Downs paddock groaned audibly. Repole and Pletcher were not in attendance. “Better him than me,’’ trainer Brad Cox, who has three Derby entrants, said of Renegade, with a grin.

That, as they say, is horse racing in all its beautiful cruelty, a sport built on the promise of possibility and often undermined by the slimmest of wind shifts. The allure of possibility is what attracted a big crowd to the Churchill Downs track on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon.

As the day’s racing paused for an hour for the Derby and Kentucky Oaks draws, fans in their finery watched from the balconies and others mingled outside the ropes where the owners and others attached to the Derby entrants gathered.

The important people – the trainers and owners – sat inauspiciously in the folding chairs.

Michael McCarthy, who had last year’s favorite Journalism, chatted amiably with people while Bill Mott, who won last year’s Derby with Sovereignty, sat in the back dressed casually in a pair of jeans and a black puffer vest. Mott has another shot this year, with Chief Wallabee, who is 8-1 out of the 12th position. Bob Baffert, who has two horses in this year’s Derby (Litmus Test and Potente), is the last trainer to win the big race in back-to-back years.

Mott at first tried to brush off the idea that coming to the draw as the Derby winner offered a different feeling. “It’s kind of ‘been there, done that’ and on to the next,’’ he said.

But then he paused and reconsidered, “I guess it does takes a little of the pressure off.”

Mike Repole would love to know that feeling.

Brisbane, Australia (CNN) — The flash mob descended on Brisbane’s city square, wearing double denim and blond wigs in the style of a legendary Australian singer as they danced with wild abandon to one of his 1980s hits.

In an unlikely pairing, pro-Palestinian protesters have adopted John Farnham’s song “Two Strong Hearts” as an unofficial anthem, because its lyrics bear a coincidental resemblance to a political slogan recently banned by the state government in northeastern Australia.

So far, 25 people have been arrested under new hate-speech legislation in the state of Queensland that threatens a two-year prison sentence for using the phrases “From the river to the sea” or “Globalize the intifada.”

Both slogans are regularly used by pro-Palestinian protesters and are highly controversial. Critics say the former demands the elimination of the Israeli state – from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea – and incites violence against Jewish people. In the past two years, the US House of Representatives has condemned it, and the British government is examining its use, as part of a review of hate speech laws due to report in May.

Queensland is the only Australian state, so far, to have introduced a specific law against the phrase, and few direct comparisons exist worldwide. The ban was passed in March, just months after gunmen killed 15 people at a Jewish gathering in December at Sydney’s Bondi Beach in the southern state of New South Wales (NSW). “We must all understand, words became vandalism, vandalism became violence, violence became murder,” Queensland Premier David Crisafulli wrote days after the shooting.

When the state proposed a ban on “From the river to the sea,” some pro-Palestinian activists noticed an echo of the forbidden phrase in the Farnham ballad “Two Strong Hearts,” which was also released in the US in 1988 as a duet featuring Johnny Mathis and Dionne Warwick.

No one was arrested for singing the lyrics at last Friday’s flash mob – they’re not exactly the same as the proscribed phrase, which is outlawed when used to menace, harass or offend. Exceptions are allowed for “genuine artistic, religious, educational, historical, legal or law enforcement purpose(s)” and conduct “in the public interest.”

But pro-Palestinian activist Remah Naji said the ban had sent a chill through the local protest movement.

“Even though these laws, in my view, are stupid, they’re still serious and they’re very dangerous,” said Naji, spokesperson for political group Justice for Palestine Magan-djin. “This could be a risk of up to two years in jail.”

Response to a massacre

After the Bondi attack, Australian authorities came under intense pressure to show they were taking strong action to stamp out antisemitism.

Queensland moved quickly, proposing and passing legislation within a month to ban what the government called “terrorist slogans” – a reference to listed terror group Hamas, which includes the words in its 2017 constitution.

It was in February that some observers noticed the line in the Farnham song. Known to his legions of fans as “Farnsey,” the singer had mixed success on the international charts but at home his powerful ballads have been belted out

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – The Santa Maria Police Gang Suppression Team arrested a person for a firearm violation just before 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The SMPD received a call for people drinking in public and GST officers found 10 people near Rancho Verde and Woodlawn doing so.

The SMPD detained all 10 individuals without incident when they found a hidden gun under a fence.

The unserialized gun had 17 rounds of ammunition, and the owner of the gun eventually identified himself for booking into custody.
