What we know about the hammer killing of a convenience store clerk in Florida

(CNN) — A mother of two was killed by a man wielding a hammer outside a convenience store in Florida earlier this month, seen in a gruesome video that has captured the attention of the nation — and the president.

A Haitian national, 40-year-old Rolbert Joachin, was charged with murder after officials said he repeatedly struck the women with a hammer in what they described as a targeted attack. Though the victim did not know Joachin, they had a previous encounter, police said.

As the victim’s community reckons with a senseless act of violence, President Donald Trump has seized on it to push an immigration agenda that would remove protections for hundreds of thousands.

Here’s what we know:

What happened?

Video of the incident, which took place the morning of April 2, circulating online and shared by the Department of Homeland Security shows a man repeatedly hitting a car parked in the gas station’s parking lot with an object that appears to be a hammer.

When a woman exits the store and approaches the man, appearing to speak to him, he walks toward her and strikes her with the object in his hand. The woman falls onto the sidewalk before he strikes her another six times on her head and torso and walks away.

Police received calls around 7:19 a.m. ET notifying them of the incident, according to court documents. When they arrived, they found the woman unresponsive and not breathing, the documents said.

Witnesses told police they had seen a man hitting a car and then striking a woman “with a mallet,” according to the arrest report.

Authorities identified Joachin — who they note had previous interactions with police — and arrested him later that day, after “an extensive coordinated manhunt,” Fort Myers Police Chief Jason Fields said Friday.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents assisted Fort Myers police in tracking down and arresting Joachin, DHS said in a statement Tuesday.

What we know about the victim

A memorial now sits outside the gas station, where community members honored a loving mother who was devoted to her faith, according to CNN affiliate WBBH.

Police have withheld the woman’s name, citing Marsy’s Law, which is designed to protect the rights and privacy of victims in Florida.

But the president of the Bangladesh Association of Southwest Florida identified her as Nilufa Easmin, a mother of two daughters and member of the group.

“Easmin was a devoted mother who worked tirelessly to provide for her two young daughters. Tragically, her life was cut short while she was at work in Fort Myers, FL, leaving her family and friends heartbroken. The loss of Easmin has created an unimaginable void in the lives of her daughters,” Samir Bahadur Syed wrote in a GoFundMe he organized in support of Easmin’s daughters.

She was working as a store clerk at the gas station at the time of the attack, according to court documents.

Micah McCombs, acting special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in Tampa, said Friday that Easmin “got her citizenship the right way” after coming to the US from Bangladesh, calling the killing “senseless.”

What we know about the suspect

Joachin was charged with murder, criminal mischief and damage to property over $1,000, a third-degree felony, according to court documents. He’s being held without bond after a hearing in Lee County court Wednesday and is scheduled to be arraigned on May 4. CNN has reached out to Joachin’s lawyers.

Joachin entered the US in 2022 and had temporary protected status until the Trump administration revoked his protections last week, accordin

South Korea’s president draws Israeli anger by using old video to make point about human suffering

By Gawon Bae, CNN

Seoul (CNN) — South Korea’s president has angered the Israeli government by sharing video on social media from 2024 that shows Israeli soldiers pushing a body off a building in the occupied West Bank.

“We need to check if this is true, and if it is, we should find out what measures were taken,” President Lee Jae Myung said in the post on X on Friday that triggered a rare public spat between two nations with diplomatic relations spanning 60 years.

In his post, Lee said there was “no difference” between wartime killings, the Holocaust and the sexual slavery of women under Japan’s colonial rule of Korea between 1910 to 1945.

It was the reference to the Holocaust that appeared to anger the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which responded in an X post on Saturday, calling Lee’s remarks “unacceptable.”

“The remarks by the President of Korea, Lee Jae Myung, including the trivialization of the massacre of Jews on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel, are unacceptable and warrant strong condemnation,” the Israeli post said.

The Foreign Ministry post added that “for some strange reason,” Lee had chosen to “dig up a story from 2024 and to cite a fake account that falsely presented it as a current event.”

The incident involving the soldiers occurred during an operation “at a time when Israeli soldiers were facing direct and immediate threats to their lives” and had been “thoroughly investigated and addressed two years ago,” the post said, without elaborating on the outcome.

“Mr. President, it’s always better to check before posting,” the ministry added.

In fact, Lee had already clarified his original remarks with another post to say it was a real event from September 2024 that had been condemned by the US.

“International humanitarian law must be abided by under any circumstances, and human dignity must also be kept as an irreconcilable top priority value,” Lee added.

CNN reported in 2024 that residents of Qabatya, near Jenin in the occupied West Bank, had filmed Israeli soldiers throwing apparently lifeless bodies off a building on September 19 of that year.

The same day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had killed four militants in a “counterterrorism operation” in the area.

Asked about the video at the time, the Israeli military said it showed a “serious incident that does not coincide with IDF values and the expectations from IDF soldiers.” The incident was being reviewed, it added.

Under international law, militaries are required to treat the bodies of enemy soldiers with respect and return them to the deceased’s family. A Palestinian politician had called the treatment of the bodies “barbaric.”

International relations

Israel has faced growing international criticism over the war in Gaza and its bombardment of Lebanon targeting Hezbollah. European nations have been particularly outspoken. But it is far less common for an East Asian leader to be so public in criticism, and South Korea has tended to maintain good relations with Israel.

This weekend, Lee appeared to double down on his original tweet – sharing a story on Saturday about the Israel’s Foreign Ministry’s response to his comment, without referring to them directly.

“It’s disappointing that one does not even once reflect on the criticisms from the people around the world who are suffering and struggling from constant anti-human rights and anti-international law actions,” said Lee. “When I am in pain, others feel that pain just as deeply.”

In an apparent attempt to lower the temperature, the South Korean Foreign Ministry weighed into the spat a couple of hours later, expressing regret that the Israeli government had “misunderstood the i

Lynette Hooker disappeared in the Bahamas over a week ago. Here’s a timeline of the key developments

By Alaa Elassar, CNN

(CNN) — It’s been over a week since Lynette Hooker, a 55-year-old mother and sailor, vanished at sea in the Bahamas, setting off an urgent search that has since shifted into a complex investigation with one person at its center: her husband of 25 years.

Brian Hooker, 58, was taken into custody by the Royal Bahamas Police Force on Wednesday in connection with her disappearance and remains in custody after an extension was granted until Monday evening, his lawyer confirmed to CNN.

Brian Hooker has not been charged, and his attorney says he “categorically and unequivocally denies any wrongdoing.”

What happens next remains uncertain. Police have requested another interview with Hooker on Monday, his attorney told CNN. By evening, authorities could choose to release him or formally charge him. It is not yet clear whether he could be held longer under Bahamian law.

Here’s a timeline of the key developments:

Saturday, April 4

Disappearance at sea: Days after her last social media post, Lynette Hooker and her husband, Brian Hooker, travel by an 8‑foot hard‑bottom dinghy near Elbow Cay as they return to their sailboat, “Soulmate,” according to Brian Hooker’s account to police.

He tells authorities rough conditions – including high winds and choppy waves – caused his wife to fall overboard.

“Strong currents subsequently carried her away,” and “he lost sight of her,” police say Brian Hooker told them. Lynette Hooker was wearing the keys, also known as an engine’s safety lanyard — a cord designed to cut power if the operator is thrown overboard — according to his account shared by police.

He says he last saw his wife swimming toward the shore, according to Richard Cook, fire team lead with Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Early Sunday, April 5

Report to authorities and search begins: Without power on their dinghy, Brian Hooker attempts to paddle to shore and the little boat eventually drifts away, hours later washing ashore near Marsh Harbour, according to his account shared by police.

He eventually makes his way through brush until he reaches a boatyard, where he contacts police, according to Cook.

Bahamian authorities and local fire and rescue crews launch a search by sea. The US Coast Guard later joins with aerial assets.

Sunday night, April 5

Family notified: Karli Aylesworth, Lynette Hooker’s daughter, told CNN her stepfather calls her Sunday evening “around 8:00 to 8:30” and says her mother is missing.

“He said … like matter of fact, ‘Hey, your mom is missing. We don’t know where she is. She’s been missing since last night, but we’re gonna come up there soon to see you,’” Aylesworth told CNN.

Aylesworth said she was processing what he said and felt like “he just dropped a bomb on me,” and then he began talking again before suddenly ending the call. “And I was just like, ‘OK, like, what?’ How do you just lose my mom?”

Tuesday, April 7

Voicemail about flotation device: Aylesworth tells CNN on Tuesday that Brian Hooker left her a voicemail saying authorities found a flotation device he says he had tossed to his wife.

“Hello, honey, I just got a call from Hope Town Search and Rescue, and they have found a flotation device that I threw to mom when she fell overboard,” Brian Hooker says in the voicemail shared with CNN. “They haven’t found her yet, but they can now focus all of their efforts in a smaller area.”
