Astronomers detect sugar in interstellar space for the first time

(CNN) — Astronomers have detected a natural sugar found in raspberries in clouds of interstellar dust and gas near the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

The sweet discovery shows for the first time that compounds that are key to life can form in the vast expanse between stars and fuels optimism that other molecules important for the origins of life might be found in space.

A team led by astronomers at Spain’s Center for Astrobiology detected the sugar, called erythrulose, which is made of four carbon atoms. Sugars play a pivotal role in living systems, helping to provide energy, build biological structures and form parts of genetic material such as RNA and DNA.

To make the observations, the team used two radio telescopes, one at the Yebes Observatory north of Madrid and the other at the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter Range, known as IRAM, in the Sierra Nevada in southern Spain, to study a molecular cloud known as G+0.693−0.027 near the center of the galaxy.

Researchers identified the sugar by comparing its molecular signature in the radio wave data from the molecular cloud with the wavelength pattern for erythrulose measured in the laboratory. The team initially searched for simpler sugars with three carbon atoms but didn’t find any.

“This finding was unexpected, as the prevailing view in astrochemistry is that interstellar molecules grow in size through the sequential addition of carbon atoms,” Izaskun Jiménez-Serra, an astronomer at the Center for Astrobiology in Madrid and the Spanish National Research Council, said in a statement. Jiménez-Serra was the lead author of the research, which published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy.

“Our discovery demonstrates that relatively complex sugars can already be synthesized in interstellar space, before stars and planets are born,” she added via email.

The study suggested that erythrulose can be made from simpler molecules on icy dust grains in space and may then become part of more complex chemical systems. Scientists have detected more than 340 molecules in the matter and gases that exist in the Milky Way’s interstellar space the but no sugars, the study noted.

“Sugar and sugar-related compounds have been found in asteroids, but the discovery of these compounds in interstellar space strengthens suggestions that our solar system may have been seeded with pre-existing organic compounds,” said Mark Sephton, a professor in the department of Earth science and engineering at Imperial College London, who was not involved in the study, in an email.

Scientists have long wondered how sugar molecules first formed on Earth; lab experiments have shown they do not form easily under the extreme conditions thought to exist in the earliest chapter of Earth’s history.

Previous detection of sugars such as ribose and glucose in primitive meteorites and in samples from the asteroid Bennu collected in 2020 suggested to scientists that some sugars may have originated in space.

Sephton said it’s possible that sugars would have been incorporated into asteroids as they formed and eventually delivered to Earth’s surface via meteorites.

Yoshihiro Furukawa, a professor at Tohoku University’s Department of Earth Sciences in Japan who was part of a team that found sugars in samples from Bennu, agreed that sugars could reach Earth and other planets via comets and asteroid dust, although the process of how life emerged remains unclear.

El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) ordenó a ICE detener la mayoría de las paradas de tráfico hasta nuevo aviso, según una fuente, en medio de la indignación tras la muerte del colombiano Joan Sebastián Guerrero en un tiroteo en Maine el lunes en el que se vieron involucrados agentes de la agencia.

La muerte de Guerrero, de 26 años, es la segunda en tiroteos que involucran a agentes de ICE en una semana: días atrás, agentes mataron al mexicano Lorenzo Salgado Araujo en Houston, Texas. En ambos casos, los tiroteos se produjeron durante detenciones de vehículos, un procedimiento al que la agencia ha recurrido con frecuencia últimamente.

Según un testigo del tiroteo de Maine ocurrido el lunes, Guerrero dijo que había intentado detenerse antes de morir. Daniel Boucher, residente de Biddeford, dijo que escuchó un sonido que pensó que era de fuegos artificiales, se asomó por una ventana del tercer piso del lugar donde estaba y vio un automóvil pequeño “girado 90 grados respecto al bordillo” y una camioneta detrás de él.

US indicts Russians alleged to be at center of major cybercrime network

(CNN) — The US Justice Department on Tuesday announced the indictment of three Russians who prosecutors say were at the center of a major cybercrime network that allegedly helped hackers target hospitals, schools and banks across the US, causing $62 million in damages.

The indictment targets one of the more brazen services provided by and for cybercriminals: so-called “bulletproof hosting” services, which lease internet infrastructure to hackers and claim to offer safe haven from law enforcement.

US prosecutors accused two Russian men, Aleksandr Volosovik and Kirill Zatolokin, of operating a bulletproof-hosting provider from a corporate office in St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city. A Russian woman, Yulia Pankova, is also charged in the criminal conspiracy. The charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

The Russia-based company, Media Land, has supported numerous criminal groups who have claimed dozens of victims, the Justice Department alleged. The company was incorporated in 2015, according to Russian business records, and is based in a semi-industrial part of St. Petersburg. The State Department is now offering up to $10 million for information on the company and its executives as the US government investigation into Media Land continues.

CNN has requested comment from an email address associated with Media Land.

US and European law enforcement have tracked Volosovik, Zatolokin and Pankova for years. When the US Treasury Department sanctioned them last year, it released a photo of Zatolokin holding a weapon and wearing a Media Land t-shirt.

“To this day, they are likely still shielding criminal activity,” Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI’s cyber division, told CNN, referring to Media Land.

The FBI will be watching to see if the crackdown on Media Land leads cybercriminals to seek out other bulletproof hosting services, Leatherman said.

“We’re looking for that now — to understand where those shifts may be and what opportunities are available to us in law enforcement and in the intelligence community to target those,” he added.

Michael DeBolt, president and chief intelligence officer at security firm Intel471, described bulletproof hosting providers as “fuel to the cybercrime underground.”

“Whether its deploying malware, hosting illicit marketplaces, launching ransomware or safeguarding stolen digital goods, Media Land’s impact should be measured by the years of criminal activity it has supported, enabled and sustained,” DeBolt told CNN.

The FBI, Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies have for years conducted operations to disrupt ransomware gangs, which extract hundreds of millions in ransoms annually from victims. While some officials in the Biden administration floated the idea of banning ransom payments, the idea was ultimately shelved because of the adverse impacts it might have on certain victims.

With Russia continuing to harbor the hackers, FBI agents are trying to chip away at the problem by targeting the ransomware groups’ computing tools, some of which are based outside of Russia.

(CNN) — President Donald Trump said that his Thursday night address will focus on “free and fair elections” and include “really big news.”

Trump on Monday announced the “Speech to the Nation” in a social media post but offered no details other than the 9 p.m. ET time. Asked in the Oval Office Tuesday to preview the speech, and specifically if it’s about elections, Trump replied: “Well, I’d rather save it, it will concern that subject, and we’ll have a couple of other things to say, but I’d rather save it.”

“But it’s really big news,” he continued. “It’s really, really big news, and our country has to shape up.”

“It doesn’t get bigger because without free and fair elections, you don’t have a country,” the president added. “We’ll be discussing other things too, but it’s going to be a very big announcement.”
