Gauchos turn tight game into a rout with 9 seventh inning runs

AUSTIN, Texas. (KEYT) - Jackson Flora broke the single-season UCSB strikeout record and the Gauchos offense put up their most runs ever in an NCAA Tournament game in a 15-1 rout of Holy Cross in an elimination game.

UCSB advances to Sunday and will face the loser of Saturday night's Tarleton Sate-Texas matchup. The Gauchos second elimination game will begin at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.

Flora improved to 12-0 on the season and has a nation-leading 1.06 earned run average. He allowed one run on two hits in 7 2/3 innings and his 9 strikeouts give him 133 on the season, passing Rodney Boone's previous record mark of 128 set in 2021.

"I can't pitch every game, so I'm just glad my team got me this far into the season and I was glad to go out and help them win today," Flora said. "Strikeouts are a really fun part of the game but it all starts with the process, going and getting strikes early and then finishing hitters and executing pitches, but that was pretty sweet."

"Fantastic effort by Jackson and the rest of the guys, grinding out some offense there," said UCSB baseball coach Andrew Checketts. "Took us a little while to get going but got going. Happy to get back in the win column and be here another day."

Flora and the Gauchos were leading 3-1 after six innings and then the bats exploded for UCSB highlighted by a grand slam from catcher Nate Vargas. The Gauchos batted around in the seventh inning scoring 9 runs to turn the tense game into a laugher.

Xavier Esquer went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI and Rowan Kelly collected three hits and 3 RBI.

Beautiful weather ahead, Sunday May 31st forecast

Kraig Pakulski 0 8 Article rating: No rating
Picnic Weather day

Picture perfect weather today as last week's slow moving and tricky storm system has pushed farther east leaving us with high pressure and abundant sunshine. A slight offshore flow has developed across the region which is creating some gusty wind areas such as The Gaviota region where a Wind Advisory is in effect through very early Sunday morning. Gusts from the north could exceed 40 pmh, especially below passes and canyons of the Santa Ynez mountains. Storm systems moving across the North Pacific have also bumped up the surf for west and northwest facing beaches. The Central Coast is under a High Surf Advisory which will last through Sunday evening. Look for pockets of fog through the overnight in areas where the northerly winds are either very weak or absent. High temperatures on Sunday should mirror what we saw for Saturday with warming for inland areas expected. Highs will be in the 60's and 70's for our beach areas with 80's expected in the warmest interior areas.

Looking ahead, things stay breezy with limited fog for the coastal areas through the next several days. Winds should stay below advisory thresholds with the strongest afternoon and early evening gusts remaining below passes and canyons. Temperatures will stay on the warm side, but hopefully not too hot for interior regions. It looks like the warmest days will be through about mid week with then a slight cool down expected by Thursday and Friday. Coastal areas will again see a mix of early morning fog and afternoon breezy sunshine. Temperatures will hover in the 60's and 70's which is about where we should be for this time of year.

Kraig Pakulski 0 1 Article rating: No rating

SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) – Santa Maria Police arrested a teen for firing a gun in front of a house at the 800 block of West McElhaney on Friday.

SMPD officers learned the teen walked to the front yard, fired a shot and walked back inside before sending its Crisis Negotiations Team.

SMPD officers later investigated and found a handgun without a clear serial number in his bedroom after the teenager surrendered to police without incident.

SMPD officers also determined a similar incident involved the same teenager the day before at the 900 block of Raaberg Avenue, when he fired a shot while walking through the neighborhood.

SMPD officers did not find him on Thursday, but evidence connected both shootings to the teen on Friday.

SMPD officers arrested the teen on multiple firearm offenses and those with more information on the incidents are asked to contact the SMPD.
