Se prevé que más de 250 millones de personas en EE.UU. (casi el 75% de la población del país) experimenten algún tipo de fenómeno meteorológico adverso debido a la tormenta actual. Esto podría manifestarse en forma de tormentas eléctricas severas, nieve, ventiscas, fuertes vientos generalizados que se alejan de las precipitaciones o un mayor riesgo de incendios.

Decenas de millones de personas en el centro de Estados Unidos sintieron la furia de la tormenta el domingo. Ahora, esta se dirige hacia la costa este.

Casi 13 millones de personas en la región del Atlántico Medio del país se encuentran bajo una amenaza de tormenta severa de nivel 4 de 5, y cerca de 25 millones más están bajo un riesgo de nivel 2 o 3 de 5 desde Florida hasta Nueva York. Algunos tornados que se formen podrían ser fuertes y duraderos, capaces de causar daños de categoría EF2 o superior.

Nieve podría caer en Tennessee, Misisipi, Alabama y el norte de Georgia apenas unas horas después de que fuertes tormentas azotaran la zona con vientos dañinos.

Este cambio drástico en el clima se debe a una gran masa de aire frío que llega tras las tormentas. Podría combinarse con la humedad residual suficiente para provocar la caída de copos de nieve en el sur entre la mañana y las primeras horas de la tarde.

En Jackson, Misisipi, cayeron copos de nieve y aguanieve en la última hora.

La nieve no supondrá un problema en las carreteras, ya que las temperaturas están por encima del punto de congelación, pero representa un gran cambio con respecto a las fuertes tormentas que azotaron la zona recientemente y al periodo de calor que batió récords a finales de la semana pasada.

Estados Unidos tiene la mayor probabilidad de vientos dañinos por tormentas severas desde 2018: un 60 %.

Un área que se extiende desde el norte de Carolina del Sur hasta la frontera entre Pensilvania y Maryland se encuentra bajo esta importante amenaza, como se observa en la zona morada de la imagen superior. También es la mayor probabilidad registrada para Washington D. C. y Baltimore.

Estar en la zona del 60 % significa que existe un 60 % de probabilidad de que las tormentas produzcan vientos dañinos de al menos 93 km/h (58 mph), criterios típicos de tormentas severas.

Según el Centro de Predicción de Tormentas, también son posibles vientos más fuertes, potencialmente superiores a los 120 km/h (75 mph), en la zona. Esto se indica con las líneas negras discontinuas bajo “intensidad” en la imagen superior.

Más de 4 millones de personas, desde el norte de Florida hasta el sur y este de Georgia y el centro de Carolina del Sur, se encuentran bajo una nueva alerta de tornado vigente hasta las 2 p. m. (hora del este) del lunes, según el Centro de Predicción de Tormentas.

Tallahassee (Florida), Savannah (Georgia) y Columbia (Carolina del Sur) son algunas de las ciudades incluidas.

Es probable que se formen algunos tornados, y es posible que se produzca uno de categoría EF2 o superior.

Las fuertes ráfagas de viento también representan un grave peligro, ya que podrían derribar árboles y causar cortes de energía. Son posibles ráfagas aisladas de hasta 128 km/h.

El granizo no representa una gran amenaza, pero si cae, podría alcanzar el tamaño de una moneda de 25 centavos.

(CNN) — Fans of cult sci-fi series “Firefly” are celebrating after star Nathan Fillion revealed that the show may be returning — in an animated format.

The series, created by Joss Whedon, of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Avengers Assemble” fame, has a legion of fans despite the fact that it was canceled back in 2003 after running for just one season. It only ever featured 14 episodes, though a spin-off movie — “Serenity” — was released in 2005.

The show followed a renegade crew on a small, battered spacecraft called Serenity, as they roamed unknown parts of the galaxy while on the run from the authorities and trying to dodge warring factions.

Now Fillion, who played Captain Malcolm ‘Mal’ Reynolds in the show, has shared the good tidings with sci-fi lovers, breaking the news on Instagram in a short video featuring many of the original “Firefly” cast.

“As of this moment the word is out. We are going to try to bring back ‘Firefly.’ And this time we’re going to animate it. Guys, bringing back ‘Firefly’ — crazy or not crazy?”

Fellow cast members, including Jewel Staite who played Kaylee Frye and Gina Torres who played Zoë Washburne, then give their opinions as to whether the plan is crazy or not.

“Now, to do this we would need Joss’ blessing … I got it,” said Fillion, as fellow cast members went on to say that the rights would also need to be obtained from 20th Century Fox/Disney.

“They got excited. They said yes,” said Fillion, adding that the team already has a script that animation firm ShadowMachine, which won an Oscar for Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio,” is working on.

“The last piece we need is a home, and for that we need you,” said Fillion, urging Instagram users to engage with the post in order to create a buzz around the campaign to revive the show. “I’m asking you to do what you’ve always done — keep Firefly flying,” he said.

Fillion’s request definitely seemed to work as the post has been liked more than 900,000 times since it was published on Sunday.

Many of the cast appeared in a “Firefly” panel at Awesome Con in Washington, DC on Sunday, where they teased the audience with their announcement, taking to the stage reading cue cards and pretending to be Nathan Fillion. Eventually, Alan Tudyk, who played Hoban ‘Wash’ Washburne, said: “Because of our schedules and availability the only way to get it done is if we animated it.”

The announcement was met with huge applause, after which Fillion directed the crowd — and anyone watching online — to interact with the news on social media.

One excited user, rosalita 9899, responded beneath Fillion’s Instagram post, saying: “Finally, Thank you. We’ve been waiting 24 years for more. Take our money, take our time, we’ve got your back. Such incredible joy. An animated series is perfect!!!”

Another, Hawkmancosplay, said: “Thank you for keeping this dream alive!”

Sebastián Marset, el presunto narcotraficante uruguayo capturado en Bolivia el viernes, fue trasladado a Estados Unidos, en donde enfrenta cargos por tráfico de drogas y lavado de dinero, según informó la Administración para el Control de Drogas de Estados Unidos (DEA, por sus siglas en inglés).

“Este arresto representa un paso significativo hacia una América más segura”, indicó la DEA en un comunicado en su página web. Marset figuraba como uno de los fugitivos más buscados por el organismo estadounidense.

“Agradecemos la asistencia de las fuerzas del orden bolivianas para la captura de Marset”, dice el comunicado firmado por Terrance Cole, administrador de la DEA.

En otra publicación del organismo, describen a Marset como un “Pablo Escobar de la era moderna”.

El uruguayo, de 34 años, era buscado por la Justicia de Paraguay desde febrero de 2022, requisitoria a la que se sumaron luego pedidos de las justicias de Bolivia y Estados Unidos.

Se lo acusa de liderar una red criminal internacional de tráfico de drogas, además de lavado de dinero. En 2025, la DEA lo incluyó en su lista de más buscados. También era requerido por Europol e Interpol.

CNN contactó a la defensa de Marset pero respondieron que de momento no harán comentarios.

El fugitivo fue capturado el viernes por la Policía Boliviana en un megaoperativo en el que también fueron detenidas varias personas que integraban su círculo cercano.

El Gobierno de Bolivia dijo que el “daño económico” a la organización criminal liderada por Marset “supera los US$ 15 millones”.

Entre los bienes incautados en el operativo hay dos aeródromos y 16 avionetas, 54 kilos de marihuana, una decena de vehículos, algunos de ellos con un alto nivel de blindaje, una motocicleta de lujo y 21 armas “sofisticadas”, detalló el viceministro de Régimen Interior y Policía, Hernán Paredes.

(CNN) — A multiday storm ripping across the eastern US is bringing a significant severe weather threat from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast as blizzard conditions threaten parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes.

Damaging winds, some topping 75 mph, and tornadoes are possible across much of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with a Level 4 out of 5 severe risk Monday afternoon across parts of South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. A Level 3 of 5 risk is in place from Georgia into Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The system kicked up Sunday with a powerful line of storms stretching from the Gulf Coast up to the Great Lakes and is racing eastward with winds up to 80 mph in spots. The system spawned numerous severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings as it pushed east overnight, reaching the Appalachians by Monday morning.

Here’s the latest:

• Severe storms: Nearly 13 million in the mid-Atlantic are under a Level 4 of 5 severe weather threat, with nearly 25 million more under a Level 2 or 3 of 5 risk from Florida through New York. Some twisters that spin up could be strong and long-lived, capable of causing EF-2 damage or greater.

• Heavy snow: Parts of the Upper Midwest and northern Great Lakes received 1 to 2 feet of snow on Sunday. Nearly 11 million people across the Midwest and Great Lakes are under blizzard warnings Monday, and nearly 20 million more are under winter weather alerts from the Great Lakes to New England. The northernmost areas could receive an additional foot or more of snow.

• Power outages: As of 6:30 a.m. ET Monday, nearly 500,000 customers had no power across seven states, according to PowerOutage.us, including over 100,000 in Michigan and more than 50,000 each in Ohio and Georgia.

• Flight cancellations: As of Monday morning, more than 1,500 flights within, into or out of the US were canceled, and more than 800 flights were delayed, according to FlightAware.

• Dangerous roadways: Blizzard conditions will make navigating roads in some areas nearly impossible on Monday from Iowa to southern and eastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

• Schools impacted: School districts in Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas and further south announced closures, delays or early dismissals in anticipation of dangerous weather.

Cities prepare for severe impacts Monday

There have been more than 300 reports of damaging wind gusts from Texas to West Virginia and Georgia since Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday, the system produced at least one reported tornado near Humphrey in Arkansas County, Arkansas, according to the Storm Prediction Center. Hail up to the size of tennis balls pelted east Texas.

Tornado and severe thunderstorm watches are posted this morning from the Florida Panhandle to the western Carolinas and the central Appalac

* WHAT…For the Heat Advisory, temperatures between 90 and 98
expected. For the Extreme Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions
with temperatures between 96 and 104 expected.

* WHERE…A portion of southwest California.

* WHEN…For the Heat Advisory, from 10 AM this morning to 10 AM PDT
Tuesday. For the Extreme Heat Warning, from 10 AM Tuesday to 8 PM
PDT Friday.

* IMPACTS…There is a high risk for dangerous heat illness for
anyone, especially for the very young, the very old, those without
air conditioning, and those active outdoors.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…Warm overnight low temperatures will
contribute to the heat risk, especially in the mountain and
foothill locations.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose
fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke.
