Mustangs can't hold onto second half lead in loss to Aggies

DAVIS, Calif. (KEYT) - Sophomore Hamad Mousa and freshman Jess Esso Essis co-led the Cal Poly men’s basketball program with 12 points apiece, but the Mustangs were held to just one field goal during the final eight minutes Saturday afternoon and slipped to a 67-58 setback at UC Davis.

Sophomore guard Cayden Ward added 11 points for Cal Poly (9-16, 5-8), which led UC Davis (15-9, 8-5), 54-47, with eight minutes remaining before the Aggies reeled off an 11-0 run to go in front. Mousa broke the drought with a pair of free throws, but a layup from Aggies guard Marcus Wilson and a three-pointer and two free throws by guard Connor Sevilla in the final two minutes placed the scoreline out of reach for Cal Poly.

Esso Essis grabbed a career best eight rebounds for Cal Poly, which kept UC Davis to a 36.1 (18-for-57) percent field goal mark. The Aggies, however, turned 19 Cal Poly turnovers into 22 points.

Starting Saturday’s matchup 1-for-9 from the floor, Cal Poly utilized a three-pointer and back-to-back jumpers from Esso Essis to erase an early deficit and go up 10-6 with 13 minutes left in the half.

The two sides traded the lead twice more with Cal Poly stretching its advantage to 22-17 five minutes before the break. Despite being held scoreless the remainder of the half, Cal Poly maintained a one-point edge heading into the locker room.

UC Davis produced the opening two points of the second half before Cal Poly registered the next seven to go up 29-23. The Mustangs thrice pushed their lead to seven early in the half before a corner three-pointer from junior guard Jackson Mosley handed Cal Poly a 44-36 edge with 12-and-a-half to play.

Cal Poly finished 14-for-14 from the free throw line – the second best total in program history for conversions without a miss. The Big West’s top free throw shooting team at 77.5 percent, Cal Poly has shot 92.8 (64-for-69) percent during the last three games.

Super Sunday weather ahead, Feb 8th forecast

Kraig Pakulski 0 21 Article rating: No rating
Partly Cloudy Santa Barbara Sunrise

A beautiful and warm mid Winter day once again for the entire region as a mild offshore flow slowly turns more westerly. We could see some patchy fog as warm offshore winds wane even further, otherwise look for mostly clear skies through the overnight with lows in the 40's and 50's. For Sunday, aside from some passing mid and upper level clouds, more sunshine is expected with highs mostly in the 60's and 70's expected. A strong westerly swell will keep surf above normal through the weekend with Surf Advisories dropping off by Monday. But, west and northwest facing beaches could easily still see large waves in to next week.

Looking ahead, a storm system is expected to approach the region early next week with increasing clouds and cooler temperatures. Rain chances look promising for mid week with widely scattered showers expected. The area of low pressure is fairly strong, but there is not a lot of moisture for the system to tap in to. With that said, we will likely see most areas picking up anywhere from a tenth of an inch to maybe one half inch of rainfall. Clouds will begin to clear out for the second half of the work week, but slight chances for showers will linger as some moisture drifts in off the ocean. Temperatures will hover near to slightly above normal through much of the upcoming week. More storms are potentially lining up in the Pacific which could produce more showers on Valentine's Day as well as through President's Day or Monday. There are still some uncertainty in the forecast models and we will work that out all next week in order to see what might be shaping up as a wet third week of February.

ICE chief counsel in Minnesota retires amid growing number of immigration cases

By Kit Maher, Aleena Fayaz, CNN

(CNN) — The top lawyer for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minnesota has left the agency, the same week an ICE attorney was removed after telling a district judge that “this job sucks” and that the Trump administration is “overwhelmed” with immigration cases.

Chief Counsel Jim Stolley retired after 31 years of service, Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told CNN. McLaughlin said Stolley’s retirement was scheduled to occur but did not provide additional details.

Stolley said in an automatic email response, “I have retired from public service,” and directed inquiries to the duty attorney. CNN also reached out to Stolley by phone but has not heard back.

The New York Times was first to report on Stolley leaving his post.

Minnesota courts have been inundated with immigration cases since the Trump administration began surging immigration enforcement to the state in December.

Earlier this week, ICE attorney Julie Le, who was detailed to Minnesota to help handle the immigration operation, was removed from her post after telling a judge that the job “sucks” because of the crushing workload and the government’s apparent inability to comply with court orders.

In an extraordinarily candid exchange with a federal judge on Tuesday, Le, who had been asked to explain why the administration was not promptly complying with a slew of court orders stemming from immigration cases she’s handling, admitted that the government did not have enough lawyers on the ground to keep up and that trying to get errors fixed is like “pulling teeth.”

Le’s comments – before Stolley’s resignation – offered a candid look at the immigration operation in Minnesota, which the Trump administration announced Wednesday would be reduced, including a withdrawal of 700 federal law enforcement personnel from the state “effective immediately.”

President Donald Trump similarly signaled less aggressive tactics in the immigration enforcement blitz, telling NBC News on the same day as the drawdown announcement, “Maybe we can use a little bit of a softer touch, but you still have to be tough.”

Last month, two US citizens were shot by federal law enforcement agents in Minnesota, sparking extensive protests. The Trump administration’s crackdown in Minnesota has also faced pushback from state and local officials, who failed to convince a federal judge in Minneapolis to temporarily block the operation.

CNN’s Devan Cole, Tierney Sneed, Hannah Rabinowitz and Hanna Park contributed to this report.
