(CNN) — The White House border czar who President Donald Trump is dispatching to Minneapolis following the fatal shooting of two US citizens is a longtime law enforcement official who has pushed for some of the Trump administration’s controversial immigration-related policies.

Trump said Monday he was sending Tom Homan to Minnesota following Saturday’s fatal shooting of Minneapolis ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents. The incident has inflamed tensions and drawn bipartisan criticism of the Trump administration’s portrayal — without evidence — of Pretti as someone who sought to commit an act of domestic terrorism and wanted to massacre law enforcement. Federal officials have so far declined to provide to the public critical details substantiating their claim an agent shot Pretti in self-defense.

The move to send Homan to Minnesota was met with some relief by Republican lawmakers and Homeland Security officials as the 64-year-old border czar has decades worth of law enforcement experience, beginning his career as a police officer in New York before becoming a Border Patrol agent in California in 1984. Homan also led Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s deportation efforts during the Obama administration.

As acting director of ICE during Trump’s first term, Homan served as the public face and vocal defender of some of the administration’s most contentious immigration policies, including the separation of children and families who crossed the border.

He said at a public event in September 2017 that his agency would arrest undocumented people who came forward to care for the children, which previous administrations had avoided. He has also virulently opposed “sanctuary city” policies that restrict local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration efforts.

But the president sending Homan to Minnesota also suggests a potential sidelining of the more heavy-handed tactics used by top Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino and underscores the ongoing internal dispute within the administration over how they’re carrying out the president’s immigration agenda.

While Bovino’s enforcement style has been backed by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Homan has generally taken a more stringent approach to immigration enforcement — wanting to focus on public safety and national security threats. That is slightly different from the broad sweeps that have been occurring in cities nationwide during Trump’s second term.

While Trump was campaigning in 2024, Homan said in an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes” that the president’s massive deportation campaign would involve targeted arrests.

“It’s not gonna be – a mass sweep of neighborhoods. It’s not gonna be building concentration camps. I’ve read it all. It’s ri

LOMPOC, Calif. (KEYT) – Lompoc’s Transit division has added and even expanded to bus routes throughout the city.

They’ve been offering free fares since the holidays, and are continuing those for another month, through the end of February.

City officials say public transit is designed to make residents’ lives easier, and good for the environment.

The new additions are in direct response to public input gathered last month.

From work commutes to running errands and even social occasions, Lompoc’s public transit is specifically designed to fit into locals’ daily activities.

City officials say this is the best time to engage with all outlets of public transit to see the new routes, stops, and offerings, at no cost.

An Iranian flag flies near the White House

By Jennifer Hansler, CNN

(CNN) — The Trump administration sent about a dozen Iranians back on a deportation flight Sunday, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

It was the first known deportation flight since sweeping anti-government protests broke out in Iran, in which thousands have been killed. President Donald Trump has threatened retaliation against Iran if it executes protesters, and although he has claimed his government with talk with Tehran, he has not taken the threat of military action off the table.

According to one source, 14 Iranians were on board the flight that left Sunday.

CNN reported Friday that dozens of Iranians were expected to be deported as soon as Sunday. However, it appears a number of Iranians who were told that they would be on the flight were not on it because of measles exposure.

A White House official stated that “while the administration does not typically comment on specific flights to protect operational security, any individuals being deported would have Executable Final Orders meaning a federal judge has ordered their removal from the United States. The Administration remains committed to using all lawful options to carry out the largest mass deportation operation of criminal illegal aliens in history.”

CNN has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, and the Iranian Mission to the UN for comment.

Bekah Wolf, the lawyer for two Iranians who had been told they would be on board the flight, said her clients had been put into quarantine because of the highly infectious virus and were not on Sunday’s flight.

However, it is only a temporary reprieve for the two men, who are gay and face “an extremely high chance” of being executed if they are forced to return to Iran, Wolf told CNN on Friday.

Both Wolf and the other source said there are likely to be future deportation flights to Iran. Sunday’s was the third flight after a rare agreement between Washington and Tehran, which do not have diplomatic relations.

One of the men, who spoke to CNN on Friday, said his message for the US president was: “If you care about the people, please let us stay.”

“We are not bad human beings. We love this country. If we could live in this country, we will love it more than we love our homelands because our homeland is captured. It’s ruined. It’s destroyed by the government of Iran,” he said.

“We came to this country for safety,” he added. He asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation.

There are concerns about the deportation of the Iranians amid the ongoing regime crackdown. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported Sunday that at least 5,520 protesters have been killed since anti-government demonstrations began in late December, including 77 minors, with an additional 17,091 fatalities under review. HRANA said 41,283 people have been arrested.
