China’s economy meets annual growth target despite US trade war but birth rate drops to record low

Beijing (CNN) — China clocked its lowest birth rate on record in 2025 as its population shrank for the fourth year in a row, deepening a demographic challenge that could drag on the world’s second-largest economy for decades to come.

The rate fell to 5.63 births per 1,000 people in 2025, beneath 2023’s low of 6.39 per 1,000. The drop suggests that a slight uptick in births in 2024 was an outlier rather than a reversal of an otherwise steady decline since 2016.

With the 7.92 million babies born in China last year outpaced by 11.31 million deaths, the overall population dropped by 3.39 million, the data shows. The country’s headcount – still the world’s second-largest, behind India’s – stands at 1.4 billion for 2025.

Announced by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday, the figures deal a blow to Beijing’s efforts to reverse the impact of decades of stringent, state-enforced birth control under the now-abandoned “one-child” policy, and persuade more young people to have children.

China’s economy grew 5% in 2025, officials also reported, in line with the government’s annual goal of “around 5%,” with expansion buoyed by a surge in Chinese exports that offset trade tensions with the US and weak consumption at home.

China racked up a record $1.2 trillion-dollar trade surplus last year, according to separate data released last week.

China’s demographic challenge

China’s changing demographics are seen as a stark challenge by officials, as the country’s labor force shrinks and its population of pension-drawing retired adults grows.

Years of stringent population control under the “one-child” policy, which was scrapped in 2016, have accelerated trends seen in other countries like Japan and South Korea, where falling birth rates have been seen as a result of rising education levels, changing views on marriage, rapid urbanization, and the higher cost of raising kids.

The aging of China’s society deepened in 2025, with the population of those aged over 60 standing at 323 million and making up 23% of the population, up one percentage point from 2024, the data shows.

A staggering half of the country’s population could be over 60 by 2100, according to United Nations projections – a reality with potentially far-reaching implications, for not only China’s economy but also its ambitions to rival the United States as a military power.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has evoked the need for “population security” and made the “development of a high-quality population” a national priority. He’s also overseen a push to automate and upgrade the country’s manufacturing powerhouse, replacing human with robotic labor.

China’s central government last year began offering annual cash bonuses to families with children under the age of three, amended rules to streamline marriage registration, and kicked off a scheme for free public preschool.

Those add to a raft of incentives local governments have tried in recent years to boost birth rates – from tax breaks and financial assistance for buying and renting homes, to cash handouts and extended maternity leave.

Analysts expect more policies or incentives to support births and marriage in the year ahead. But many believe it will be impossible to stem the decline, especially as young people struggle to find jobs and eye the high costs of raising children. The uneven burden of childrearing is also thought to discourage many young women from procreating.

Iraq announces full withdrawal of US forces from its federal territory

(CNN) — Iraq’s government on Sunday said US forces had completed a “full withdrawal” from military facilities within the country’s federal territory, which excludes the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region where US troops remain.

Iraq’s defense ministry said the final contingent of US advisers had departed from Al-Asad Air Base in Anbar province in western Iraq, which hosted US troops for more than two decades.

The US military has been drawing down for several years after the Iraqi government called for it do so in 2023

The US-led coalition to fight against the Islamic State group, also withdrew from the Joint Operations Command headquarters, leaving the installations under full control of Iraqi security forces, the ministry statement added.

US forces still remain at Harir Air Base in Erbil province, located in the Kurdistan Region. Iraq’s central government does not fully control the Kurdish region in northern Iraq as it’s an autonomous federal entity with its own government, parliament and security forces, recognized by the Iraqi constitution.

The US military presence in Iraq has fluctuated greatly since the 2003 invasion. At its height, the US had 170,000 troops in Iraq. In 2011, former President Barack Obama withdrew US forces from the country. Around 5,000 troops were deployed to Iraq in 2014 at the request of the Iraqi government, seeking US assistance in the fight against ISIS.

From December 2021, when the US military announced the end of its combat role in the country, the US has had roughly 2,500 troops in Iraq in an advise and assist capacity.

The Iraqi ministry released a video Saturday showing senior Iraqi military commanders walking through empty halls and corridors inside Al-Asad Air Base.

The US Department of Defense’s Central Command told CNN Sunday that “Iraqi Ministry of Defense’s earlier statement indicating the handover were factual,” without providing further details.

The withdrawal comes amid regional tensions between the US and Iran, as US President Donald Trump considers whether to strike Iran amid deadly street protests against the country’s authoritarian regime.

US forces stationed at the Al-Asad base have been attacked scores of times over the years by Iran and Iranian-backed groups.

In January 2020, Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on US forces at Al-Asad in retaliation for a drone strike at a Baghdad airport that killed Iran’s most powerful military commander, Qasem Soleimani. The heavy bombardment lasted for around two hours, targeting only the US areas of the shared base.

Following the October 7, 2023, terror attacks in Israel, Iran-aligned militia groups launched a series of missile strikes on Al-Asad. In August 2024, five US service members and two US contractors were injured in an attack.

Iraqi officials on Sunday said its armed forces across all branches possess sufficient capability to secure the country and the future cooperation with the US will center on training, equipment acquisition, joint exercises, and operational coordination under bilateral agreements.

Billionaires are 4,000 times more likely to hold public office

Kraig Pakulski 0 24 Article rating: No rating

By Tami Luhby, CNN

(CNN) — The richest people on the planet are far more likely to be in power politically than everyone else, Oxfam’s annual inequality report found.

Some 74 of the world’s 2,027 billionaires held either executive or legislative government positions in 2023, giving them a 3.6% chance of holding office, according to Oxfam’s study, which was released Sunday. By contrast, the average global citizen had just a 0.0009% chance of holding office.

“This year’s report really shines a light on the relationship between political inequality and economic inequality,” said Rebecca Riddell, senior policy lead for economic justice at Oxfam America. “The fact that billionaires are 4,000 times more likely to hold office than you or I underscores just how much outsized power billionaires have.”

The Oxfam report, which draws on data compiled by Forbes and other sources, is timed to coincide with the kickoff of the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, an elite gathering of some of the richest people and world leaders. Its release also comes as billionaire US President Donald Trump marks his first year in office.

Trump has assembled the wealthiest cabinet and team in modern American history, with multiple billionaires and multimillionaires leading government agencies. The administration, along with a Republican-led Congress, last year enacted a sweeping domestic policy package that included big tax cuts for the wealthy and historic cuts to the nation’s safety net program. In addition, Trump is attempting to strip union protections from a sizable share of the federal workforce, as well as dismantle consumer protection measures and corporate regulations.

“A billionaire-led administration has pushed a pro-billionaire agenda that has taken the US to the brink of extremes in terms of in terms of inequality,” Riddell said.

Oligarchy, however, is a global issue, she said. The report points out that the richest men in Argentina and Africa have close ties to Argentina’s president and Nigeria’s leader, respectively, which has led to tax breaks for their businesses.

Lucrative year

2025 was a prosperous year for the world’s billionaires.
Their wealth grew three times faster last year than the past five-year average, reaching a record $18.3 trillion, Oxfam found.

Their collective wealth skyrocketed by $2.5 trillion, which is almost equal to the wealth held by the 4.1 billion people in the bottom half of the wealth ladder. Two-thirds of that growth would be enough to end global poverty for a year, Riddell said.

In the United States, billionaires’ net worth totals just under $8 trillion. It’s also home to 932 billionaires, more than any other country.

America may also soon see the world’s first trillionaire. If Elon Musk has as lucrative a year in 2026 as he did last year, his wealth will top $1 trillion before the next Davos forum, Riddell said.

Meanwhile, the rate of poverty reduction globally has stagnated, with levels generally where they were in 2019, according to Oxfam. Nearly half the world’s population – or 3.8 billion
