(CNN) — A new species of monkey with distinctive orange lips and a deep roaring call has been identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Colobus congoensis, known to local people as Likweli, is just the fifth new monkey species scientists have identified in Africa in the last 75 years, according to a study published in the journal PLOS ONE Wednesday.

The monkey has a glossy black coat, long fur, a sweeping tail and striking orange-cream facial markings, said researchers from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and the City University of New York Graduate Center in statements on Wednesday.

They added that the species has “distinctive cranial, dental, and skeletal characteristics that separate it from every other known African colobus monkey.”

It is also smaller than related Colobus monkeys, weighing around 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms).

“It is distinguished by sleek, light-reflecting fur and dramatic facial features created by long black facial hairs and large folded ears,” said FAU.

“The discovery of Colobus congoensis is reshaping our understanding of African monkey evolution,” said study senior author Kate Detwiler, an associate professor of biological sciences in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science.

“Its closest known relative is Colobus satanas, found more than 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) away in west-central Africa,” she said. “Yet our genetic evidence shows the two species diverged roughly 4 to 5 million years ago, marking one of the oldest known evolutionary splits within the Colobus lineage.”

The process of describing the new species began in 2008, when an unusual monkey was photographed by researchers working in east-central DRC. Ten years later, they made a clearer observation, and went on to make 114 sightings from 2018-2022.

In addition to its anatomy and field observations, researchers also had to study the monkey’s genetics and use local ecological knowledge to prove that this was a species that had never been described before.

“When a potential new species is discovered, the evidence has to be overwhelming,” said coauthor Christopher Gilbert, professor of anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center and Hunter College, in the CUNY statement.

“We analyzed museum collections and comparative datasets, examining skulls, pelts, and skeletal anatomy alongside specimens from known African colobus monkeys,” he said. “Those comparisons allowed us to demonstrate conclusively that Colobus congoensis represents a distinct species.”

However, there are some conservation concerns for Likweli, given the fact that the sightings were made across a range of around 1,700 square kilometers (656 square miles).

“The researchers propose that Colobus congoensis be classified as Endangered because of its restricted range, habitat loss, and hunting pressure,” reads the CUNY statement. “Most of its known habitat lies within Lomami National Park, making protection of the region critical for the species’ survival.”

‘Rare and exciting’

Alexander Georgiev, a senior lecturer in primatology at Bangor University, Wales, who was not involved in the study, called the analysis “very thorough and convincing.”

“Finding a new monkey species that is not only unknown to science but is also little known to the people that live where it occurs is very rare and exciting indeed,” he told CNN on Thursday.

“The authors of the study report that residents in only eight of a total of 52 villages that border the range of this new species they visited were able to provide information about this primate and describe it,” said Georgiev.

Many social media users get hurt or enraged when their lives aren’t reflected in the content in their feeds.

(CNN) — Scrolling on TikTok during a break one day, I watched a content creator named Kara make a vegan bean soup recipe to boost her iron levels during her menstrual period.

“All my anemic girlies this one is for you,” the young woman from central Florida, who goes by her first name online, wrote in the caption.

Many people liked and commented positively on her video, but others had questions: “What if I don’t like beans?” and “Can I substitute the beans with something else?”

Um … what? I wondered why they didn’t just look for a different recipe.

Welcome to the strange phenomenon of people expressing anger or helplessness to online content creators or writers who don’t acknowledge their specific lifestyles or limitations.

“This is something that has always existed but has been very much exacerbated by social media and accelerated rather intensely in … recent years,” said Dr. Jessica Maddox, an associate professor of entertainment and media studies at the University of Georgia.

Those comments on Kara’s August 2023 video made it go viral and gave the behavior its trendy “bean soup theory” nickname that’s still frequently lobbed and discussed today. The attitude is also referred to as “whataboutism” or “what about me-ism.” (Kara didn’t respond to my request for comment.)

“It’s normal for us to have egocentric processing, to filter the world through our own experiences,” said Micheline Maalouf, a Florida-based licensed mental health counselor and content creator with more than 1 million followers on TikTok.

But people shouldn’t stop there, experts said — so unpacking other psychological, emotional and technological factors that limit critical thinking and empathy is important.

Moments of strange outrage

A woman named Daisey posted on X (formerly Twitter) about a morning ritual she and her husband enjoy together, sharing that “my husband and i wake up every morning and bring our coffee out to our garden and sit and talk for hours. every morning. it never gets old & we never run out of things to talk to. love him so much.”

I loved that for her! Many other people, however, did not. “I hope you know how privileged that sounds. I bet most people have sacred things but aren’t as lucky,” one person replied.

“Lovely intention,” someone else responded. “But when I read it, I felt cringe as well. Not cuz she’s living her best life with her love … but (unintentionally) coming off to the (rightfully) bitter ppl who (a) don’t have gardens which can be extremely therapeutic.”

Daisey caught so much heat and sparked such widespread discourse that she deleted her post. (She didn’t respond to my request for comment.)

(CNN) — Several witnesses will testify on Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee about whether Todd Blanche should be confirmed as US attorney general.

Blanche fielded hours of questions from the Senate panel yesterday, acknowledging there were some errors in the department’s vetting of the Epstein files, but defending his handling of the case. He also called Trump’s US Capitol riot pardons “generous.”

Blanche’s path in the committee is razor thin, as just one Republican no vote could derail his nomination.

The acting attorney general had to tread carefully before the panel – reassuring Republicans that he would keep up his aggressive approach at the Justice Department, while also signaling that President Donald Trump won’t be able to interfere politically.

Yet some Republicans still said Wednesday that they hadn’t reached a final decision.

The fate of Blanche’s nomination hinges on two Republican senators with nothing to lose: Texas’ John Cornyn and North Carolina’s Thom Tillis. Cornyn recently lost the Republican primary in his state to a Trump-backed rival, while Tillis announced last year that he would not seek reelection.

If either lawmaker votes against Blanche’s nomination in the committee, it would effectively kill it.

Both senators have been among the sharpest Republican critics of the Justice Department’s earlier proposal of a nearly $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund, which Blanche has said is “dead.”

Cornyn told CNN on Tuesday that his concerns are far from alleviated, while Tillis said that he’s “leaning yes” on Blanche.

For Thursday’s hearing, Republicans will put forth former Attorney General John Ashcroft, who served under President George W. Bush; Jon Adler, the president of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Foundation; and Jennifer Bos, the mother of an Illinois woman whose body was allegedly abused by an undocumented person.

Democrats on the committee will call Elizabeth Oyer, who had served as a career pardon lawyer at DOJ before being fired by Blanche last year. Oyer, who sued over her ousting, claimed she was terminated because she refused to bow to pressure from Trump appointees who wanted her to restore the gun rights of actor Mel Gibson, which he lost after a 2011 state domestic violence conviction.

Committee Democrats are also calling Dani Bensky, a Jeffrey Epstein survivor, as a witness.

The committee will likely hold a vote on the nomination later this month.
