(CNN) — Top Republicans on Capitol Hill have spent 10 weeks struggling to end the bitter stalemate over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

Now, as federal workers — including US Secret Service agents who protected the president in this weekend’s shooting in Washington — prepare to miss a paycheck, GOP leaders are under more pressure than ever before to resolve the standoff.

Congressional Republicans return to DC Monday evening with a slew of contentious votes ahead that have fiercely divided the party, including the critical DHS funding measure. But there are other must-pass bills that still don’t have the votes to pass in the narrowly divided House, according to GOP leadership aides, including a bill overseeing the government’s spy powers that conservative privacy hawks detest and a massive farm bill that’s angered the MAHA bloc of the GOP.

“We’ve got a nightmare week,” one GOP leadership aide told CNN.

Perhaps most difficult for Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune will be ending the 72-day shutdown of DHS, which has thrown into question pay for thousands of federal workers, including the agent who took a bullet to the vest at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this weekend. DHS has so far paid staff out of a previously approved $10 billion rainy day fund – but that money will be depleted soon, aides have warned. The expectation is that staffers would receive only one more paycheck from that fund before it runs out.

“We have to move DHS funding because it’s urgent. As the secretary of Homeland Security has said. We are out of money. He is out of money at the end of this week. Democrats have been playing games with this. It’s very dangerous as demonstrated Saturday night. We got to get the job done,” Johnson said Monday when asked if he would move on that funding this week.

Resolving the DHS funding crisis was already a nearly impossible task for Johnson and the fractious House GOP. The party is in a bitter feud over how to reopen DHS, with conservatives enraged that Thune decided to bow to Democratic demands to only partially fund the department – without money for immigration enforcement. It has set off a frantic scramble to pass a separate – and legislatively complex – package of only federal immigration enforcement and border patrol funding, though that has been bogged down by other hardliner demands.

Saturday’s gunfire at one of Washington’s most high-profile annual events has further complicated talks, with some of those hardliner Republicans, like Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, demanding that the party set aside funding for a “secure ballroom” on White House grounds for the president to safely hold events. (Many of them already had major demands for the DHS vote, including tying the measure to Trump’s federal elections overhaul bill, as well as a promise for an ambitious domestic policy push sometime before the midterms.)

(CNN) — An all-electric aircraft has flown demonstration flights from Manhattan to John F. Kennedy International Airport, something the operator hopes will become an everyday occurrence at locations around the world.

Electric air taxi firm Joby Aviation flew the first electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) demonstration flights between two points in New York City on Friday and is continuing testing this week.

The electric aircraft, which look similar to a giant battery-powered drone, can carry five people, including one pilot. It takes off vertically like a helicopter, then some of the propellers tilt to propel the aircraft forward. The company says they are quieter than helicopters and produce zero operating emissions because they are electric.

The goal is to connect existing heliports in Lower and Midtown Manhattan to JFK International Airport in less than 10 minutes instead of the one-to two-hour drive.

“These flights advance our work to determine how next-generation aviation technology can serve the people of New York and New Jersey,” said Kevin O’Toole, chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the area’s airports, in a release.

Joby owns helicopter ride-share company Blade, which flies similar routes with traditional helicopters, and the company also maintains partnerships with Delta Air Lines and Uber.

Joby has done other test flights since 2023, but this 10-day flight campaign is part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program.

In March, the US Department of Transportation chose eight pilot programs where eVOTLs will be tested. Besides urban air taxi services, regional passenger transportation, cargo, emergency meal response operations, autonomous flight and offshore energy sector transportation are being tested.

Joby is working with the Port Authority, as well as the Texas DOT, Utah DOT, Florida DOT and North Carolina DOT.

In 2024, the FAA published new rules inching air taxis one step closer to reality. Since then, companies like Joby have been working on testing for certification.

“Together, these pilot projects will create one of the largest real-world testing environments for next-generation aircraft in the world,” the DOT said in March. “Data from the pilot projects will be used by the FAA to develop new regulations that safely enable this futuristic technology at scale.”

The company is in its final stages of FAA certification. The FAA has a five-stage process for certification.

La primera dama Melania Trump sugirió este lunes que el presentador Jimmy Kimmel debería perder su trabajo por bromas que hizo durante un sketch simulado de la Cena de Corresponsales de la Casa Blanca en su programa la semana pasada.

El monólogo de Kimmel —emitido el jueves en “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, días antes de que el presunto atacante armado intentara ingresar al evento del que el presidente Donald Trump, Melania Trump y otros altos funcionarios fueron evacuados— incluyó una broma en la que dijo que la primera dama tenía “un brillo como de viuda en espera”.

“Su monólogo sobre mi familia no es comedia; sus palabras son corrosivas y profundizan la enfermedad política en Estados Unidos”, dijo Melania Trump en un mensaje en X.

“Personas como Kimmel no deberían tener la oportunidad de entrar a nuestros hogares cada noche para difundir odio. Un cobarde, Kimmel se esconde detrás de ABC porque sabe que la cadena lo protegerá. Ya es suficiente. Es hora de que ABC actúe. ¿Cuántas veces la dirección de ABC permitirá el comportamiento atroz de Kimmel a costa de nuestra comunidad?”, continuó.

Kimmel, en una versión simulada de la cena anual dos noches antes del evento oficial, hizo una serie de bromas dirigidas al presidente y a su familia. Habitualmente, un comediante encabeza la cena, y el sketch de Kimmel consistió en que ofreciera un monólogo como si fuera el comediante seleccionado para burlarse de los asistentes.

“Nuestra primera dama está aquí. Señora Trump… tiene un brillo como de viuda en espera”, dijo Kimmel.
“Por cierto, en el desafortunado caso de que nuestro presidente tenga una emergencia médica esta noche, ¿tenemos un médico en la sala? —oh, lo siento. Quiero decir, ¿tenemos un Jesús en la sala? Siempre los confundo”, añadió, en referencia a un meme que el presidente Trump había publicado previamente y luego eliminado en Truth Social, en el que parecía representarse como Jesús.

Melania Trump, quien al igual que su esposo fue retirada del escenario durante el incidente de seguridad, hizo una aparición inesperada en la sala de prensa de la Casa Blanca mientras el presidente hablaba con los periodistas esa misma noche. Sin embargo, no ha comentado públicamente sobre el tiroteo, y su crítica a Kimmel marca sus primeras declaraciones sobre el asunto.

El sábado fue la primera vez que la primera dama —que ha mantenido de cerca su privacidad e independencia durante su segundo mandato— estuvo junto a su esposo cuando fue evacuado de forma urgente por el Servicio Secreto.

El mensaje de la primera dama en redes sociales abre una nueva controversia sobre la libertad de expresión en torno a Kimmel, quien ya había sido blanco del Gobierno de Trump por un comentario tras el asesinato de Charlie Kirk. El presentador se burló del presidente por hablar sobre la renovación del Ala Este de la Casa Blanca cuando un periodista le preguntó por la muerte de Kirk, y en el programa de la noche siguiente dijo que “muchos en el mundo MAGA están trabajando muy duro para capitalizar el asesinato de Charlie Kirk”.

La presidenta de México, Claudia Sheinbaum, dijo este lunes que espera que la participación de dos agentes de la CIA en un operativo en Chihuahua sin el conocimiento del Gobierno federal sea “una excepción y no la regla”, ya que no se cumplieron las leyes sobre la coordinación y cooperación de instituciones extranjeras en el país.

“Lo que le planteamos allí es que no tenía conocimiento el Gobierno federal de la participación de estas personas. Esperemos que sea un caso de excepción, que a partir de este momento, como se venia haciendo, se cumplan las reglas de nuestra Constitución y de la Ley de Seguridad Nacional”, dijo Sheinbaum en conferencia de prensa, cuando mencionó una nota diplomática entregada por la Cancillería al embajador de EE.UU. en el país.

“Que quede como excepción y que no se vuelva a repetir. Que garanticemos que es una relación de coordinación y respeto”, agregó la mandataria.

Sheinbaum también descartó que el asunto genere un distanciamiento con Washington. “Esperemos que este asunto se aclare y continuemos coordinando y colaborando. No tenemos deseos de entablar un conflicto con los Estados Unidos. Pero sí tenemos que ser muy claros y hacer público todo esto que se presentó”, expresó.

El sábado, el Gobierno informó que los agentes que murieron en un accidente tras un operativo antidrogas en una zona remota de Chihuahua entraron al país con un pasaporte diplomático y otro como visitante, sin autorización para realizar actividades remuneradas. “Ninguna contaba con acreditación formal para participar en actividades operativas en territorio nacional”, informó el Gabinete de Seguridad en un comunicado. CNN consultó al Departamento de Estado de EE.UU. para conocer su postura y está en espera de respuesta.

Sobre la actuación de funcionarios de Chihuahua involucrados en la autorización de los agentes, Sheinbaum dijo que “tiene que aclararse cómo fue la situación” y dijo que espera ver los resultados de la comisión investigadora creada por la gobernadora María Eugenia Campos, quien fue citada a declarar al Senado este martes.
