(CNN) — An archaeologist has found remains he believes belong to the famed French musketeer D’Artagnan at a church in the Netherlands, potentially solving the mystery of the hero’s final resting place more than three centuries after he died.

The skeleton was found buried in a tomb in front of the altar at the St. Peter and Paul Church in the southern Dutch town of Maastricht, alongside a musket bullet and a small bronze coin minted in 1660, local independent archaeologist Wim Dijkman told CNN on Thursday.

This physical evidence matches historical records that report that D’Artagnan, whose full name was Charles de Batz de Castelmore, died after being shot in the throat by a musket ball during the French siege of Maastricht in 1673.

The siege was part of the Franco-Dutch War (1672-1678), a French war of conquest that aimed to seize control of the Spanish Netherlands. D’Artagnan was later immortalized in the 1844 novel “The Three Musketeers,” by French author Alexandre Dumas, and, in modern times, in films and TV series.

Dijkman, the former Maastricht city archaeologist, told CNN that he had been petitioning church officials to let him carry out excavations at the property since meeting French historian Odile Bordaz, a specialist in D’Artagnan, some 25 years ago.

Bordaz had long theorized that the body of the musketeer was probably buried near the French camp, rather than being taken back to France, so that King Louis XIV could personally attend the burial of his loyal servant.

When Dijkman met Bordaz and told her that he lived in Maastricht, she implored him to search for the musketeer’s remains, he told CNN, which he now believes he has done.

“I’m very confident,” said Dijkman, who is nonetheless awaiting the results of tests to evaluate DNA matches between the skeleton and two people who claim to be descendants of D’Artagnan, as well as a strontium isotope analysis that will reveal the region in which the person to whom the remains belong was born.

“I am a scientist. I’m an archaeologist. I want to be as sure as possible about this,” he said.

In addition, Jos Valke, deacon of the church, said a letter reporting D’Artagnan’s death stated that he had been laid to rest in consecrated ground.

“Well, ⁠under ​an altar –– it couldn’t be much holier than that,” ​Valke told Reuters.

“When you add it all up, then, it seems plausible to us. But of course nothing ​is certain yet,” he added.

El Congreso Nacional de Honduras destituyó este miércoles a destituir, mediante el voto de 93 diputados, al fiscal general del Estado, Johel Antonio Zelaya, quien había sido suspendido de su cargo luego que se le abriera un juicio político por casos asociados a las últimas elecciones realizadas en el país centroamericano.

Zelaya, quien el martes había comparecido a una comisión de nueve diputados que se nombró para que investigara la denuncia en su contra, estaba citado ante el pleno de los 128 diputados este jueves, pero envió una nota a la secretaría del Congreso informando que no se presentaría porque, argumentó, se le habían violentado todos sus derechos.

A pesar de la ausiencia de Zelaya, los diputados procedieron a presentar el informe de la comisión especial nombrada para el juicio político que recomendó su destitución.

Una vez destituido, Zelaya, dijo a los medios de comunicación que presentará una demanda internacional por las acciones que el legislativo hondureño emprendió en su contra y que, según dijo, violentaron su debido proceso.

Aseguró que no cometió ningún delito y que todas sus actuaciones fueron enmarcadas en la ley.

Zelaya había sido nombrado como fiscal general por una Comisión Permanente el 1 de noviembre de 2023, por un periodo de cinco años. Un nombramiento que fue cuestionado en su momento por los partidos de oposición, que argumentaron que la comisión no tenía facultades de nombrar a funcionarios de la fiscalía, si no que era el deber del pleno de los 128 diputados que conforman el Congreso Nacional.

En sustitución de Zelaya fue juramentado como nuevo fiscal general el profesional del derecho Pablo Emilio Reyes Theodore, quien es de afiliación del gobernante Partido Nacional.

Theodore era parte de los cinco togados que fueron nominados cuando se
nombró como fiscal general a Zelaya.

Minutos después de la destitución del Zealya, el Congreso iniciaba la lectura de una denuncia para abrir un juicio político contra la magistrada y presidenta de La Corte Suprema de Justicia, Rebeca Lizette Ráquel Obando.

Sin embargo, el juicio no se abrió porque la funcionaria judicial envió una nota de renuncia a su cargo a la secretaría del Congreso Nacional.

En el escrito argumentó que renunciaba por motivos personales, pero que dejaba el cargo de presidenta del Poder Judicial y no el de magistrada, para el cual fue electa el 16 de febrero de 2023 hasta el 2030.

Ante la renuncia de Obando, el Congreso Nacional nombró al magistrado Wagner Vallecillo Paredes como presidente interino de la Corte Suprema de Justicia.

El presidente del poder legislativo, Tomás Antonio Zambrano, dijo que en los próximos días vendrán más juicios políticos de altos funcionarios de Gobierno.
