Stephen Colbert ya tiene un nuevo trabajo asegurado para cuando termine su etapa de 11 años como presentador de “The Late Show” en mayo: el comediante y conocido superfán de J. R. R. Tolkien anunció que coescribirá y desarrollará una nueva película de la exitosa franquicia “El Señor de los Anillos”.

Colbert se unió al director de la trilogía “El señor de los anillos”, Peter Jackson, para revelar la noticia en un video.

“Estoy bastante contento con esto… ya sabes lo que significan los libros para mí y lo que significan tus películas para mí”, le dijo el presentador nocturno a Jackson, quien lideró al equipo ganador del premio Oscar detrás de las trilogías originales de “El señor de los anillos” y “El Hobbit”, que recaudaron en conjunto casi US$ 6.000 millones.

Será la segunda de dos nuevas películas próximas de la franquicia fantástica que están en producción en Warner Bros. Discovery, la empresa matriz de CNN, junto con New Line Cinema. Warner Bros. compartió el video del anuncio en sus redes sociales.

La película se titula provisionalmente “Shadow of the Past”, según Deadline.

Jackson también dio al público una actualización sobre la próxima película de “El señor de los anillos”, cuyo estreno está previsto para 2027: “The Hunt for Gollum”, dirigida y protagonizada por el veterano de la franquicia Andy Serkis.

Colbert dijo que la próxima entrega se basará en partes del libro de Tolkien “The Fellowship of the Ring” que no llegaron a aparecer en las películas originales.

“Lo que me encontré leyendo una y otra vez fueron los seis capítulos del inicio de (‘The Fellowship of the Ring’) que ustedes nunca desarrollaron en la primera película en su momento… y pensé: ‘Oh, espera, quizá eso podría ser una historia propia que encaje dentro de la historia más grande’”, dijo.

Colbert contó que habló de la idea con su hijo, el guionista Peter McGee, para definir el enfoque narrativo de la historia.

“Me tomó unos años reunir el valor y llamarte, pero hace unos dos años lo hice. Te gustó lo suficiente como para hablar conmigo sobre ello”, le dijo Colbert a Jackson.

Colbert dijo que él, McGee y Jackson han estado trabajando junto a la guionista Philippa Boyens en el desarrollo de la historia. “No podría estar más feliz de decir que les encantó, y en eso es en lo que vamos a estar trabajando”, dijo Colbert.

Colbert anunció en enero que el episodio final de “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” se emitirá el 21 de mayo, después de que CBS decidiera el año pasado cancelar el programa nocturno, de alta audiencia, citando presiones financieras.

Colbert aludió al próximo final del programa en su anuncio más reciente, diciendo: “Resulta que voy a estar libre a partir de este verano”.

Cloudy skies prevail Thursday morning and disappear in a similar fashion to the start of the week. We begin to see slow clearing by midday and rinse and repeat weather patterns into the weekend. Highs rise to mid 70s and 80s and winds remain light.

La demócrata Emily Gregory ganará una elección especial para la Cámara de Representantes estatal en un distrito de Palm Beach que incluye la residencia de Mar-a-Lago del presidente Donald Trump en Florida, proyecta CNN, sumando otra victoria en una elección especial a la reciente racha de triunfos de los demócratas en todo el país.

Baseball in Japan, according to Yasuko Tanahara, starts and ends with a bow.

It’s meant as a measure of respect – to your teammates, to your opponents, to the umpires, to the fans in the crowd – but it can also be seen as a nod to what the sport means to the culture of a nation that has embraced the American pastime as something more than just a game.

She’s been coaching kids in the sport for years out of Osaka and emphasizes that what she’s teaching is not just how to field a ground ball or how to swing a bat effectively; Tanahara is teaching life.

“I teach them that they need to be polite, greet people properly,” she said of the kids she coaches for Yamadanishi Little Wolf in Osaka, Japan, in the new CNN Films documentary, “Homecoming: The Tokyo Series.”

“I tell them that they need to grow up in a way that doesn’t bring shame to those people that raised them. It should never be about self-centered desires or egos.”

In Japan, baseball is a life lesson. And the professionals who have gone to North America to chase success in Major League Baseball carry the weight of being living, breathing examples of that life lesson to a nation of more than 120 million people.

In the documentary, which begins streaming Friday on the CNN app, the pressure on the stars who played in last year’s season-opening series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs is laid bare. Five Japanese players – Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki of the Dodgers and Shota Imanaga and Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs – played in the series, etching new legacies for Japanese stars that are clear across Japan’s baseball world.

“When we were little, Major League Baseball was a world that was so amazing to us. In this island that is Japan, if we crossed the sea there was this stage that felt like a dream, with absolute superstars,” said Toru Tanahara, Yasuko’s son and fellow coach on Little Wolf.

ICE agents have been sent to airports across the US, and now some Democrats are raising a new concern: could polling places be next? The Trump administration’s move is fueling alarm on the left that immigration enforcement could spill into the November elections.

Here’s what else you need to know to get up to speed and on with your day.

1⃣ US soldiers

Around 1,000 soldiers from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division are expected to deploy to the Middle East in the coming days, adding to the growing US military presence as the Trump administration promotes talks with Iran to end the war. The brigade will serve as the “ready unit” in the region, able to respond quickly if needed. At the same time, President Donald Trump indicated Tuesday that a deal to end the conflict could be in sight, and that Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were leading the negotiations. While Iran previously denied any talks with the US, an Iranian source told CNN there has been “outreach” between the two countries.

2⃣ Homeland Security shutdown

A standoff over Department of Homeland Security funding continues to drag on after nearly 40 days, with President Trump stopping short of endorsing a Republican plan to end the shutdown. GOP leaders pitched their strategy to Trump during a Monday night meeting at the White House but left without a clear sign of his support. They proposed funding DHS, except for a small portion of the immigration enforcement budget — a concession to Democrats. But Democrats say the plan falls short, and they’re pushing for broader reforms to ICE. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also signaled Tuesday the proposal is insufficient, telling CNN he plans to press for more.

3⃣ Moon base

NASA’s new chief unveiled an ambitious vision on Tuesday that includes a revamped roadmap for a permanent moon base. While the space agency has long had its sights set on establishing a permanent settlement on the moon for astronauts to live and work, Tuesday marked the first time NASA has revealed a timeline for such efforts. “The moon base will not appear overnight,” NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said, adding the agency “will invest about $20 billion over the next seven years and build it through dozens of missions.” How the agency will exactly fund and execute the plan remains unclear, but the proposal underscores Isaacman’s push to accelerate NASA’s scientific and human spaceflight agenda.

4⃣ Sora

OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is winding down Sora, the video-generation app it launched amid much fanfare last year. The app is being shuttered as OpenAI shifts focus to other priorities, including efforts to “advance robotics that will help people solve real-world, physical tasks,” a company spokesperson said, adding that the product’s high compute costs required trade-offs. Sora quickly rose to the top of Apple’s App Store after its September debut. But it soon drew scrutiny, with copyright holders raising concerns over the use of their intellectual property and people’s likenesses
