Delta flight returns to Savannah airport after engine trouble sparks grass fire

(CNN) — A Delta Air Lines flight from Savannah, Georgia, to Atlanta was forced to turn back Sunday night due to engine trouble, which sparked a large grass fire near the airport runway, according to air traffic control audio.

Delta flight 1067, a Boeing 737-900, had just taken off from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport around 6:45 p.m. Sunday when the pilot declared an emergency.

“Everything ok? I saw a pretty large flame on takeoff,” an air traffic controller asked the pilot, heard in a radio recording on Broadcastify.

“We lost left engine straight out here for Delta 1067,” the pilot can be heard saying.

The controller acknowledges the grass fire shortly after, telling another plane on the runway to move, saying “we’re going to get a fire truck out there, that whole taxiway is on fire.”

The pilot of flight 1067 later asks: “This fire. Is it related to the runway? Is it what just happened with our airplane, or is it something different?”

The controller replied, “Unfortunately, when the engine blew, it set the whole grass on the left side of the airport on fire.”

There were 179 customers, 2 pilots and 4 flight attendants on board, according to CNN affiliate WSB. No one was injured.

“Delta flight 1067 from Savannah to Atlanta returned to the airport soon after takeoff Sunday evening, following a mechanical issue with the aircraft’s left engine,” Delta said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate WJCL.

“The Boeing 737-900 landed safely and was met by fire trucks, with customers deplaning at the gate,” the airline statement said.

The flight landed back at the transit hub at 7:12 p.m., according to flight tracker FlightAware.

Video shared on social media showed large rings of fire alongside the runway, with a thick, orange haze on the horizon. In one video, breakneck winds can be heard.

Passengers Mary Muff and Jeanne Miraglia told CNN affiliate WTOC how they heard a large boom around take off.

“The pilot came on saying the engine had blown, but we have another good engine,” Miraglia told WTOC. “And we’re gonna be fine and told us what to look for – fire trucks, grass fires, and things like that.”

CNN has reached out to Delta Air Lines, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, and the Federal Aviation Administration.

Emergency response teams, including firefighters, were called to the scene Garden City Fire Rescue said on Facebook. The department said it was operating in coordination with the Savannah Fire Department, Pooler Fire-Rescue and 165th Airlift Wing Fire Department.

The blaze has since been extinguished, WSB reported, and the fire did not affect flights or runways, WJCL reported.

10 must-see looks from the 2026 BAFTAs red carpet

By Leah Dolan, CNN

London (CNN) — As if there weren’t already enough showstopping outfits at London Fashion Week this weekend, the coinciding 79th British Academy Film Awards on Sunday offered another stage for brands to showcase their designs as Hollywood A-listers including Timothée Chalamet, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Ethan Hawke and Kirsten Dunst descended on the city’s Royal Festival Hall for the UK’s glitziest film awards ceremony.

Savvy stars understand the significance of the BAFTAs: Not only does it offer a chance to celebrate the best in British creativity, but its red carpet also offers an opportunity to propel one’s career. For years now, fashion has played a greater role in a film’s marketing strategy, as evident most recently with “Wuthering Heights” and “Marty Supreme.” Meanwhile, more stars are signing lucrative ambassadorship contracts that arguably allows them to skip the mainstream, well-paying blockbuster in favor of a more niche film project, so long as they wear their client’s clothes on the red carpet.

At this year’s event, the clothes were quirky, distinctive and elegant, and often in subdued shades like crimson, plum and black. Some attendees chose to support British fashion stalwarts such as Roksanda, Erdem and Burberry, the latter whose runway show this evening will close out London Fashion Week. Other stars, like BAFTAs Rising Star nominee Archie Madekwe who wore a silk neck ruff by Dior, toyed with British historical dress codes.

Seemingly in keeping with the eccentric whimsy that British fashion has become known for, many of the otherwise more traditional gowns came with something unexpected — see the sculptural hem on Chase Infiniti’s Louis Vuitton dress or the dramatic, side-swiping cut-out of Renate Reinsve’s. Meanwhile, there was also plenty of Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel, with several celebrity guests including Maya Rudolph, Gracie Abrams, Jessie Buckley and Tilda Swinton wearing his zeitgeist designs.

See 10 looks from the BAFTAs that caught our eye.

Kirsten Dunst

It was Kirsten Dunst’s first BAFTA awards, and although she was nominated for her performance in “Roofman,” she arrived on the red carpet looking like she had taken inspiration from another award-winning film: “Poor Things,” which spurred a trend for inflated mutton sleeves. Her giant puff-sleeved dusty rose jacket (which sat on top of a pale pink and black midi dress) was from Valentino, and looked best when posed in a power stance.

Ethan Hawke

It’s hard to go wrong with a suit by Giorgio Armani (the late designer has long defined red-carpet glamor with his sleek, tailored designs). Such was the choice of Ethan Hawke at the BAFTAs: the “Blue Moon” actor and Richard Linklater favorite wore a one-button suit by the Italian label paired with a champagne-colored shirt and smart dress shoes. Yet, staying true to his personal style, which in recent years has seen the actor embrace classic, understated menswear with an unexpected bohemian edge, he injected personality into his BAFTA outfit with a jeweled gold bolo tie.

Teyana Taylor

Teyana Taylor is carving out a name for herself as a red carpet vixen, — setting her own terms on how a movie star should appear in the arena of fashion. For her latest look at the BAFTAs, in which she was up for best supporting actress for “One Battle After Another,” Taylor wor

Who sits where at Trump’s State of the Union address: A visual guide

(CNN) — President Donald Trump will address a joint session of the 119th Congress on Tuesday, after accepting House Speaker Mike Johnson’s formal invitation in January to speak.

It’s an opportunity for the president to outline his administration’s goals and address the nation’s most pressing issues.

When Trump takes the dais Tuesday night, Vice President JD Vance and Johnson are expected to be seated behind him on either side.

In front of the president, Cabinet members, Supreme Court justices, Joint Chiefs of Staff, former members of Congress and members of the diplomatic corps will be seated. Seats in the rest of the chamber are not assigned, according to the Congressional Research Service. Senators and House members are seated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The president and first lady also typically invite about two dozen guests to sit in the gallery, to help put a human face to the president’s message for both policymakers and viewers at home.

One person will be absent during the speech: the designated survivor. The designated survivor is a member of the Cabinet chosen to remain in a secure location during the speech in case of catastrophe, to ensure continuity of government. Doug Collins, the secretary of the Department Veterans Affairs, was assigned the role during the president’s address in 2025.

Trump’s approval rating with independents hits a new low ahead of the State of the Union

Kraig Pakulski 0 32 Article rating: No rating

By Ariel Edwards-Levy, Jennifer Agiesta, CNN

(CNN) — When President Donald Trump gives his State of the Union address Tuesday, he will face a public that increasingly questions his priorities and expresses broad doubts about whether his proposed policies are helping the nation, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

Adding to the pile of alarming indicators for the president’s party heading into this year’s midterms, Trump’s approval rating among political independents has dipped to a new low in CNN polling.

Just 32% of Americans now say that Trump has had the right priorities, while 68% say he hasn’t paid enough attention to the country’s most important problems. That’s the president’s most negative reading on that question to date during either of his terms in office. At the same time, Americans say, 61% to 38%, that Trump’s policies will move the country in the wrong direction rather than the right one. And Trump’s job approval rating among all adults remains mired at 36%.

The poll’s findings suggest the scale of the task ahead of the president.

When Trump addressed Congress last year for the first time since returning to the White House, his approval rating stood at a career-high 48% in CNN’s pre-speech polling. Since then, he has lost ground across all major demographic groups, with Republicans, conservatives and White Americans without college degrees among the few groups to hold a net-positive view of Trump.

Some of the steepest declines include a 19-point drop in approval among Latino Americans and an 18-point drop among Americans younger than 45. Among political independents, Trump’s approval rating has dropped 15 points over the past year to 26%, the lowest it’s been in either of his terms.

Americans want to hear about the economy and cost of living

State of the Union addresses typically draw disproportionately friendly audiences, with supporters of the president more likely to tune in. That could give Trump an opportunity to rally his own partisans, whose support for the president has also softened over the past year.

Strong approval among Republicans stands at 49% in the poll, down from 64% just after his address to Congress last year and the first time in this term it’s dipped below the 50% mark. Nearly three in 10 Republicans say Trump hasn’t paid enough attention to the most important problems, and 16% say his policies will move the country in the wrong direction.

Asked to choose the issue they’d most like Trump to address in his State of the Union speech, 57% pick the economy and cost of living, more than quadrupling the share who want to hear him focus on any other individual topic, including immigration, the state of democracy, health care policy, crime or foreign policy. Half of Democrats say they want Trump’s speech to touch on economic issues, rising to 56% among independents and 65% of Republicans.

“Part of the reason why I think people elected Trump was because they were hurting under Biden. … I think people were expecting Trump to provide a little bit of relief to their suffering,” wrote one poll respondent, a Republican from New Mexico. “Grocery prices are just through the roof. Everything is so expensive. … So I think he needs to talk about the economy, and he needs to talk about what kind of things he’s already done.”

Trump’s job approval rating, which has hovered below the 40% mark since last autumn, stands at 36%, with 63% disapproving. Nearly half strongly disapprove of his job performance, while 19% strongly approve.

Those who approve only moderately of Trump’s performance are more likely to take issue with his priorities than with his policies. While just 6% in this group think Trump’s proposals will move the country in the wrong direction, 34% say the president hasn’t paid enough attention to the country’s most important issues.
