(CNN) — In some two dozen cases stemming from President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota that CNN has reviewed, federal judges appointed to the bench by Democrats and Republicans have had to use terms like “contempt” and “noncompliance” to get the government’s attention to respond to court orders.

To date, it doesn’t appear that any judge in the District of Minnesota has held an agency official or Justice Department attorney in civil contempt of court or imposed sanctions in cases related to Operation Metro Surge. But the sheer number of threats is significant.

Many of the punishment threats have arisen in cases where judges concluded that an immigrant was unlawfully arrested and must immediately be released. Other compliance issues have bubbled up when Immigration and Customs Enforcement releases a noncitizen with certain conditions that they weren’t subject to prior to their arrest, enraging a judge who never gave permission to impose such constraints.

“This is clearly not tenable,” Judge Laura Provinzino, an appointee of former President Joe Biden, told one top government attorney late last month. “I can’t continue to have (federal prosecutors) violating really important orders … If somebody should be released, that has to happen.”

The potential punishments highlight the smoldering tension between the federal judiciary, which has had to handle scores of cases brought by immigrants claiming they were unlawfully detained in recent weeks, and the lawyers defending the Trump administration’s operation, who often have little insight into the actions of their agency clients or the ability to sufficiently keep up with the pace of litigation.

Often, a judge is the one ordering the government to “show cause,” or explain, why the court should not hold lawyers or agency officials in contempt. But in some instances, attorneys representing immigrants swept up in the enforcement blitz have asked the judge to impose sanctions when compliance issues have occurred.

“It’s very rare for federal government officials to face contempt sanctions in court,” said David Cole, a Georgetown Law professor who served as the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union. “And yet, it’s become almost routine under this administration.”

The various contempt threats are “about putting pressure on the government to comply with the court order,” Cole said. “Once they obey the court order, the purpose of those sanctions is over.”

Indeed, though some of the punishment threats are still looming over the government, in case after case, the issue has fizzled out after DOJ attorneys on the frontlines of Trump’s Operation Metro Surge rectified problems identified by the court.

Natalie Baldassarre, a Justice Department spokesperson, insisted in a statement to CNN that the administration “is complying with court orders” and attacked the judges taking issue with the government’s actions in Minnesota.

“If rogue judges followed the law in adjudicating cases and respected the government’s obligation to properly prepare cases, there wouldn’t be an ‘overwhelming’ habeas caseload or concern over DHS following orders,” she said. “The level of illegal aliens currently detained is a direct result of this administration’s strong border security policies to keep the American people safe.”

‘Pulling teeth’ to get agencies to correct errors

More than 400 cases were brought in Minnesota last month by immigrants who were arrested amid Operation Metro Surge. CNN reviewed a subset of them that were highlighted by the chief judge of the state’s federal court as he chided the administration for violating nearly 100 judicial edicts.

El presidente Donald Trump amenazó este lunes con bloquear la apertura de un nuevo puente que conectará a Estados Unidos y Canadá, arremetiendo nuevamente contra el vecino del norte por una serie de cuestiones económicas mientras se profundiza la brecha entre Washington y Ottawa.

Trump declaró el lunes en Truth Social que “no permitiría” la apertura del Puente Internacional Gordie Howe, una estructura de 2,4 kilómetros que conecta Detroit con Windsor, Ontario.

La construcción principal del puente ya está terminada y se espera que se inaugure este año tras un período de pruebas.

“No permitiré que este puente se abra hasta que Estados Unidos reciba una compensación completa por todo lo que le hemos dado y, además, y lo que es más importante, hasta que Canadá trate a Estados Unidos con la justicia y el respeto que merecemos. Iniciaremos las negociaciones INMEDIATAMENTE”, escribió el presidente.

No está claro cómo Trump bloquearía la apertura del puente.

CNN se ha puesto en contacto con la Casa Blanca, el primer ministro Mark Carney, la gobernadora de Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, y la Autoridad del Puente Windsor-Detroit, encargada de su gestión, para obtener comentarios.

Trump también afirmó incorrectamente que Canadá “es dueño tanto del lado canadiense como del estadounidense y, por supuesto, lo construyó prácticamente sin contenido estadounidense”.

El puente de más de US$ 4.000 millones, llamado así en honor al famoso jugador de hockey sobre hielo canadiense Gordie Howe, está siendo pagado, construido, operado y mantenido en su totalidad por Ottawa, pero será propiedad conjunta del Gobierno de Canadá y el estado de Michigan, según el acuerdo de 2012 que establece los términos del puente.

El senador Jon Ossoff incorporó los archivos de Epstein a un nuevo y potente argumento político durante un mitin en Atlanta el fin de semana.

“Esta es la clase Epstein que Gobierna nuestro país”, señaló Ossoff el sábado y añadió la extrema riqueza del gabinete del presidente Donald Trump. “Son las élites a las que fingen odiar”.

Para ser claros, no hay evidencia contundente de irregularidades penales en los archivos del presidente Donald Trump, su secretario de Comercio Howard Lutnick, su exestratega Stephen Bannon y su benefactor político Elon Musk, todos los cuales tienen menciones notables en los archivos.

Ossoff es el único demócrata del Senado que se postula para la reelección en un estado ganado en 2024 por Trump, lo que lo convierte en el contendiente demócrata más amenazado en el Senado.

“Elizabeth Drew her sits on such an elevated— self elevated— moral pedestal in her own mind and her heart. So she is challenged by these feelings that she has for this man who represents so many of the things that that frighten her sense of self,” said Lawrence.

Nicholas Gonzalez played opposite Lawrence as the graduate student caught in a whirlwind romance.

“My character really kind of just keeps tearing down any kind of walls that she tries to put up, anything that she tries to put between them,” said Gonzalez.

The director Dale Griffiths Stamos says she intentionally reversed many long standing tropes. 

“I reversed things in a number of ways, one of which is older woman, younger man. But the other way of which is the woman is the rationalist, the man is the romantic. I wrote the role for a Latino actor because I was really tired of seeing in the industry the typecasting that was happening,” said Stamos.

The film was largely shot in Santa Barbara and serves as a cinematic love letter to the city where the director lives, featuring local landmarks
and central coast talent.

“The tourism board of Santa Barbara should be very happy because it looks gorgeous on the film. It really does,” said Nicholas Gonzalez.

“it's not only a beautiful, naturally beautiful environment to shoot in, so you already have that going for you. But the community came out in ways that was incredibly generous. An expert professor from UCSB gave us her home for four shooting days. Black Sheep restaurant gave us their restaurant,” said Stamos.

“Imbalance” premieres Tuesday night at 8:30 pm at the SBIFF Film Center.
 
An additional screening is planned Thursday morning at 9:20 am in the same theater.
