Gen Z won the revolution. The old guard are dominating the election

(CNN) — Bangladesh votes on Thursday in the first election since a Gen Z rebellion toppled an ageing autocrat – an uprising tens of millions of young people dreamt could chart a new course for their country.

Images of longtime leader Sheikh Hasina fleeing by helicopter as protesters stormed her residence in the summer of 2024 sent shockwaves around the world, inspiring other youth-led movements against corruption and nepotism that helped topple governments in Nepal and Madagascar.

Many are happy that Hasina’s 15 years of rule – marked by accusations of rigged elections, the loot of state resources and brutal crushing of dissent – have ended.

The “revolution showed the power of what Gen Z can achieve,” Mirza Shakil, a student who participated in the protests to topple Hasina, told CNN.

But the two candidates most likely to lead Bangladesh into a post-Hasina future are a far cry from those who risked everything on the barricades and in the streets to topple her.

One is the 60-year-old scion of a political dynasty which has dominated Bangladeshi politics for decades. The other is a 67-year-old Islamist leader whose party is fielding no women candidates in the polls.

“We dreamt of a country where all people regardless of gender, race, religion would have equal opportunity,” another former protester Sadman Mujtaba Rafid told Reuters.

“We expected policy changes and reforms, but it is far away from what we dreamt of.”

A consequential vote

Hasina’s downfall began with student demonstrations over civil service job quotas. In response, her government unleashed a brutal and bloody crackdown that only galvanized the movement and brought more people onto the streets.

Protests soon spread nationwide, and when the army said it would not fire on protesters, it was clear Hasina’s rule was over.

In August 2024, students stormed her official residence, smashing walls and looting its contents, forcing her to flee into neighboring India and exile.

Last November, a court in Dhaka sentenced Hasina to death in absentia for her role in the unrest, in which the UN human rights office estimates around 1,400 people were killed.

Hasina now finds herself a pawn in a tense standoff between the two countries as Bangladesh demands her extradition to face justice for crimes that she insists she did not commit. Her Awami League is banned from contesting in the upcoming vote.

The absence of Hasina and her party has been a boon for its historic rival, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Its leader, Tarique Rahman, the son of former prime minister and bitter Hasina rival, the late Khaleda Zia, has since returned to Bangladesh after 17 years of exile and now appears the frontrunner to win.

Another of the old guard enjoying a comeback is Jamaat-e-Islami, the country’s largest Islamist party, which is making a resurgence after years of suppression under Hasina.

Meanwhile the National Citizen Party (NCP), a political party founded by students following the uprising, has struggled to meaningfully muscle its way into Bangladesh’s fractious and often violent political scene.

In late December, it stunned many when it announced an alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami.

That pact is partly about protection, said Naomi Hossain, a professor of Development Studies at SOAS University of London.

“Some in the NCP stand a strong chance of getting seats if they ally with Jamaat,” she told CNN.

Federal judge blocks California’s law enforcement mask ban

By Piper HudspethBlackburn, CNN

(CNN) — A federal judge in California on Monday temporarily blocked the state from enforcing its ban on most law enforcement officers from wearing masks during operations.

US District Judge Christina Snyder in Los Angeles granted the Trump administration’s request for a preliminary injunction, finding that the ban “unlawfully discriminates” against federal agents because it does not equally apply to state law enforcement officers.

Snyder, however, kept in place another law requiring federal officers operating in the state to display either their name or badge number.

The ruling is a partial win for the Trump administration, which challenged the policies in federal court last year, insisting both be thrown out to protect federal agents.

The administration had argued that the laws, signed in September in response to immigration raids last summer in Los Angeles, were an unconstitutional attempt to regulate federal law enforcement officers.

CNN has reached out to the Justice Department and California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office for comment.

The mask ban, the first of its kind in the United States according to the Associated Press, seeks to bar neck gaiters, ski masks and other facial coverings for local and federal officers who are conducting official business. There are exceptions for undercover agents, medical masks and tactical gear. The legislation came after months of immigration arrests conducted by masked federal agents using aggressive tactics across the country.

Currently, there is no federal policy dictating when officers can or should cover their faces during arrests. Historically, officers have almost always concealed their faces only while performing undercover work to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations, law enforcement experts have told CNN.

For his part, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has insisted the ban pushes back against the federal government’s use of masked agents without identification or badge numbers to detain people on the streets during immigration raids.

“It’s like a dystopian sci-fi movie. Unmarked cars, people in masks, people quite literally disappearing,” Newsom said at a press conference when he signed the law last year.

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – Sergio Contreras of Oxnard was sentenced to 16 years in state prison for assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy, and street terrorism in connection with an August 2024 gang-related attack in an El Rio parking lot.

Contreras was previously convicted by a Ventura County jury on Dec. 10, 2025.

The jury also found true all special allegations including that the crime involved great violence and was on behalf of a street gang and the court also found true that Contreras was armed and used a weapon, a pocket knife, to commit the crime as well as that he was on probation at the time of the violations detailed the Ventura County District Attorney's Office in a press release Monday.

On Aug. 19, 2024, a man was being watched by three known gang members, including Contreras, in a restaurant parking lot in the unincorporated community of El Rio shared the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

Surveillance video captured Contreras driving a white Honda Accord into the same parking lot, parking near the victim's vehicle, and waiting inside of the car with the other men where they watched their intended victim explained the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

Contreras then exited the Accord, spoke with the victim and then punched him before placing him into a headlock noted the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

The three passengers then joined Contreras and began to punch and kick the victim added the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

After breaking free and trying to run away, the victim was tripped and knocked to the ground and video captured Contreras pulling out what appeared to be a folding knife and stabbing the victim in the leg and arm as he shielded himself from the attack stated the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

Contreras folded the knife and returned it to his pocket before all four attackers fled the scene and one of the men took one of the victim's shoes

The knife was never recovered, but detectives did locate the stolen shoe during a search of one of the defendant's homes noted the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

Two of the other defendants charged in connection with the attack pled guilty to charges of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, conspiracy to commit a crime, and street terrorism stated the Venture County District Attorney's Office.

The third person involved was a juvenile at the time and pled guilty to the same charges as the other two defendants detailed above shared the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

"This was a gang-motivated attack that could have easily resulted in a loss of life," said Senior Deputy District Attorney Lauren Malan who prosecuted the case. "The defendant’s actions demonstrate the extreme danger gang violence poses to our community, and this sentence reflects the seriousness of that conduct and our commitment to holding violent offenders accountable."
