Sunday, Jan 25th forecast looks great

Kraig Pakulski 0 19 Article rating: No rating
Cloudy Sky

A deep marine layer produced some spotty drizzle this morning before a light to moderate offshore flow developed which scoured out the clouds and left us with a nice day. The winds are just strong enough in Ventura County to warrant low end Wind Advisory for portions of Ventura County which last through Sunday. Wind gusts could exceed 35 mph below foothills and canyons that favor a north to northeast direction. Again, this brief Santa Ana should die out by late Sunday. As is normal with a weak offshore flow, patchy fog could develop for some wind protected areas and settle close to the ground making for reduced visibilities. Temperatures on Sunday area expected to range from the low to mid 60's for most areas with perhaps a 70 or two in the warmest areas.

Looking ahead, the new work week will start off quiet with more mild weather. A storm system will barrel in to the Pacific Northwest with the tail end dropping far enough south to maybe bring some brief light rain the Central Coast by late Tuesday. Our forecast computer sees the rain not really holding together south of the Bay Area, but a slight chance will stay in play for now. High pressure then builds over the region and we expect to see mostly clear skies and slight warming as we head in to next weekend. However, the ever active Pacific storm track will continue to be busy with systems pushing onshore well to our north. We still don't see any significant rain chances as we approach February, but mid and high level clouds will likely drift over us. If something does develop or slide farther south, we will let you know if rain chances possibly come in to play over the weekend.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) – The ocean water at East Beach in Santa Barbara is now open for recreational use after a month-long water contact closure by the County of Santa Barbara Health.

Officials issued the closure on December 24th for areas 1/4-mile east to 1/8-mile west of the Mission Creek outfall following a sewage spillage after a pump bypass failure, dumping 4,500 gallons of untreated sewage during the holiday rainstorms.

An estimated 2,200 gallons made it into Mission Creek according to the County of Santa Barbara.

On Friday, the department announced ocean water quality tests have shown the area is now safe for recreational water use.

Kraig Pakulski 0 24 Article rating: No rating

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KEYT) – The Thousand Oaks Police Department are on the search for two teenage girls reported missing earlier this week, after disappearing just a day apart in Ventura County.

Authorities say 17-year-old Genesis Gabriella Bach walked away from her guardian at the Oaks Mall in Thousand Oaks on January 19th, and has not been seen since. She was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black jeans when she was last seen. Authorities also noted Genesis suffers from depression, but is not currently taking any medication.

Her whereabouts are unknown, but is believed to be staying with a friend somewhere in the city of Oxnard.

The next day on January 20th, 18-year-old Mckenna Elizabeth Balch was last seen by the same guardian at their residence, 176 Pepper Road in Newbury Park. She did not attend school but had her phone on her, and was last seen wearing a pink sweater and blue jeans at the time.

Mckenna's whereabouts are unknown, but thought to be with Genesis.

Authorities noted this behavior is not out of the ordinary for the two girls, as they have run away in the past.

Their guardian last heard from them on January 22nd via text message.

Anyone who spots the girls or has any information is urged to contact Ventura County Sheriff’s Dispatch at (805) 654-9511.

Takeaways from the first Texas Senate Democratic primary debate

Kraig Pakulski 0 28 Article rating: No rating

By Arlette Saenz, CNN

(CNN) — The first debate in the Texas Senate Democratic primary on Saturday revealed few policy differences between US Rep. Jasmine Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico.

The contrast was instead between their styles and the approaches each would take to try to flip a Republican-held seat. No Democrat has won a statewide election in Texas in more than three decades.

The one-hour debate came less than six weeks before the state’s March 3 primaries, which include a Republican contest featuring incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, US Rep. Wesley Hunt, and state Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Here are three takeaways from Saturday’s debate:

Virality vs. unity

Crockett and Talarico agreed on a general principle: Democrats need a fighter in the US Senate. They diverged on how to wage that fight.

“I am here to tell you that while the system has been fighting me, I have been fighting them back,” Crockett said.

Crockett, a 44-year-old former state representative and civil rights lawyer, has risen to prominence through an outspoken and fiery style showcased in viral moments on social media. Those moments have rankled Republicans and at times some in her own party.

“He’s not as known right now, because I have engaged in these fights,” she said of Talarico, with whom she served in the state legislature. “I will do the edgy things, the things that the political consultants will never tell you to do, because right now, people are hurting.”

“It’s not about who sounds as clean as possible. It is about tapping into the rawness of this moment,” she added.

Later, in her closing statement, Crockett said, “Whoever goes to the United States Senate is going to have to be ready for real war.”

Talarico, a 36-year-old former teacher and Presbyterian seminarian, has a more subdued approach and often talks about his faith as he tries to attract voters across the political spectrum.

“The real fight in this country is not left versus right. It’s top versus bottom,” Talarico said. “We will not win this race in November with the same old politics of division.”

Would they abolish ICE?

Both candidates decried the Trump administration’s handling of immigration, speaking hours after a border agent in Minneapolis shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti. It was the second fatal shooting of a protester by federal immigration authorities during their ongoing operation in Minnesota.

Crockett called US Immigration and Customs Enforcement a “rogue organization,” while Talarico accused agents of having “executed a man in broad daylight on our streets just this morning.”

When pressed on her position on abolishing or defunding ICE, Crockett said, “We absolutely have to clean house, whatever that looks like, I am willing to do it.”

Asked the same question, Talarico said, “It’s time to tear down this secret police force and replace it with an agency that actually is going to focus on public safety.”

Both Cornyn and Paxton posted on social media during Saturday’s debate accusing the two Democrats of wanting to abolish ICE, a political flashpoint that has divided the national Democratic Party in recent years.

Immigration and border issues loom large in Texas, which has a 1,254 mile section of the U.S.-Mexico border. The state is home to large refugee and other immigrant communities as well as tens of thousands of border agents and other law enforcement focused on im
