Teen Detained by ICE in Oxnard Returned Home Same Day, Volunteers Say

OXNARD, Calif. - A teenager was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents Tuesday morning while walking in the Lemonwood neighborhood of Oxnard, according to community volunteers who witnessed the incident.

The detention happened around 6:30 a.m. The teen was released and returned home later that same day.

Volunteers with VC Defensa, a community organization that patrols neighborhoods across Ventura County in the early morning hours, say they received reports of ICE vehicles in the area and responded to the scene.

When volunteers arrived, ICE agents were already speaking with an individual who was ultimately able to walk away without further communication with agents. Shortly afterward, volunteers say agents turned their attention toward them, yelling and pepper-spraying their vehicles before leaving the area.

A short time later, on San Mateo Place, volunteers say ICE agents tackled another individual to the ground. They later learned the person was a teenager between 16 and 18 years old.

"The narrative that they are saying is the people that they are taking are criminals. We know that this is a lie.. this has always been a lie. there should be no place in our society For something as horrible as criminalization of immigrants," said Elaine Yompian, an organizer with VC Defensa. "There is no way to explain what we were witnessing.. Again, three age grown agents with weapons and everything and with full force taking a child down onto the ground as he was struggling.. It was a horrible thing to see.. We started yelling and alerting the community."

Volunteers report they were pepper-sprayed again as agents drove away with the teen.

Organizers with VC Defensa confirmed the teen is a U.S. citizen and was released and returned home the same day.

“El pueblo salva al pueblo — only the people save the people,” said Yompian. “And we understand that with movement and people power, we can make a difference for long-term, sustainable change that actually provides real dignity.”

Following the incident, VC Defensa conducted community outreach to warn residents about ICE activity in the area. During that outreach, organizers connected with the teen’s family.

You News Channel has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for a comment on the incident but have not yet received a response.

Financial stress may be as bad for the heart as traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease

Financial stress can be chronic and ongoing

By Katia Hetter, CNN

(CNN) — Worrying about money and food may age the heart even faster than traditional risk factors of cardiovascular disease, according to a new study published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and the findings raise new questions about how financial stress fits into cardiovascular health and what people can do to protect their hearts.

I turned to CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen to help explain how financial stress can affect the heart and what steps people can take to improve their heart health and protect against that stress. Wen is an emergency physician and adjunct associate professor at George Washington University. She previously was Baltimore’s health commissioner.

CNN: What did this study find?

Dr. Leana Wen: The researchers analyzed data from over 280,000 adults who had completed detailed surveys about the social and economic factors in their lives and underwent clinical evaluations of their cardiovascular health. Instead of just looking at whether people developed heart disease, the team focused on a concept called “cardiovascular age,” which reflects how old a person’s heart and blood vessels look biologically compared with what one would expect for their actual age.

They found that people who reported higher levels of financial stress and food insecurity tended to have evidence of more advanced cardiovascular aging, even after accounting for traditional medical risk factors.

In other words, two people of the same chronological age and with the same clinical risk profiles could have hearts that “aged” at different rates, depending on how much financial strain they were under. While the study does not prove that financial stress directly causes accelerated heart aging, it strongly suggests that the economic strain can affect not only mental well-being but also cardiovascular health.

CNN: What does it mean to say that stress can “age” the heart?

Wen: When researchers measure heart aging, this refers to structural and functional changes in the cardiovascular system that increase the risk of heart disease. These include stiffening of blood vessels, changes in heart muscle function and impaired ability of the cardiovascular system to respond to exertion.

Chronic stress can accelerate these processes. Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline affect blood pressure, heart rate, inflammation and metabolism. When these systems are activated repeatedly over long periods, they can contribute to wear and tear on the heart and blood vessels. Over time, that cumulative effect may resemble what we see with aging or long-standing medical conditions.

CNN: How is financial stress different from other types of stress?

Wen: Financial stress has some unique features that make it particularly potent. Unlike an acute stressor such as a short-term work deadline or a brief illness, financial strain is often chronic and ongoing. It can involve persistent worries about bills, housing stability, medical expenses, debt or support of family members.

Dos Equis revives ‘Most Interesting Man’ ads as beer sales struggle

By Jordan Valinsky, CNN

New York (CNN) — Dos Equis is reviving its famous “The Most Interesting Man” advertising campaign after a decade in an effort to turn around the beleaguered brand.

Sales of the Heineken-owned Mexican lager dropped last year, mirroring a broader industry decline as drinkers consume less beer. Executives hope the once-popular campaign will reignite interest in the nearly 130-year-old brand.

“The beer category as a whole has had a tough time,” said Alison Payne, chief marketing officer of Heineken USA. But during the 10 years of the campaign, which launched in 2006, Dos Equis’ volume tripled, so “we have high hopes that this will spark sales.”

The campaign first premiered 20 years ago and became a pop culture sensation. The ad inspired parodies on “Saturday Night Live” and made the actor, Jonathan Goldsmith, a recognizable face. He’s returning to the role in a 60-second ad that debuts Monday during the College Football Championship on ESPN.

Dos Equis could use the attention. For the full year of 2025, retail sales dropped 8%, far worse than its competitors Modelo and Corona, which both slipped 2%, according to NIQ data provided to CNN from Bump Williams Consulting.

The Mexican import is also dealing with the repercussions of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. Many Latino consumers, both legal and undocumented, are fearful of going out to stores or holding big celebrations. The sales drop is also affecting rival Corona.

“There are clearly still some pressures in place in the form of ICE and immigration enforcement that have impacted the shopping behaviors of select consumers, and that pressure does not appear to be letting up as we head into this new year,” said Dave Williams, president of Bump Williams Consulting.

Payne told CNN “it’s been a tough time” for Dos Equis since it skews heavily torward the Hispanic consumer, but said that weak consumer confidence and inflation is hurting all Heineken brands.

Heineken, which also brews Amstel and Birra Moretti, cut its financial guidance twice last year as drinkers cut back on buying beer because of the higher cost of living. The company expects its profit to fall when it releases its full-year earnings in February.

This week, the brewer announced the surprise resignation of CEO Dolf van den Brink after six years in the position, signaling larger troubles for the Amsterdam-based company. A replacement wasn’t immediately named.

Heineken is a smaller player in the United States compared to Budweiser and Molson Coors. Retail sales of the Heineken family of brands declined 9% in the US last year, according to NIQ data, Williams said. Heineken 0.0, its non-alcoholic version, was the only Heineken-owned beer to register growth.

However, Payne hopes that bringing back a familiar face could help Dos Equis maintain or grow market share.

“When we say we retired the most interesting man, it actually didn’t disappear from the cultural conversation at all,” she said, noting that the younger generation is familiar with him because of the memes the ad has spawned.

Williams praised the original campaign, but told CNN that he questions if there’s “enough nostalgia among current and lapsed” drinkers to restore Dos Equis to a leadership position in what has become a far more competitive Mexican import category.

“That said, there is clearly a sizable pool of Mexican import consumers across the country and if this campaign can be leveraged to start rebuilding their brand awareness among consumers as an alternative to current competition… then that is certainly a step in
